Excellent video series. My Powerhouse lantern stopped working this weekend while camping and I tried to fix in the field but when I got it apart a bunch of gunk shot up through the valve when the generator stem was off. I took the assembly out of the tank and shined a light in the tank and sure enough there was a bunch of dirt and grime floating around in the tank. Lesson learned to ALWAYS use the filter funnel with some gauze. I lost mine years ago so I will be making a purchase for a new one. totally worth the $10.99 from Coleman! But thanks to your video, that is all I will be spending to fix my Powerhouse lantern. Thank you friend!
Thank you for the great video. I have the 295 Powerhouse version, but the construction looks to me the same as your 285. Mine was not leaking, however the valve knob was loose and the mantles would still emit some flames exiting the very top. The light was yellow as well. I tightened the valve jam nut and cleaned out the air tube with pipe cleaners. Also I sprayed some carb cleaner into the generator tube (not sure if that is proper cleaning procedure). Anyway, after reassembly and lighting the lantern, it glows white and just a slight bare minimum of flame escapes the top of the mantles. Thanks again.
Outstanding, thanks for sharing. I never used carb cleaner however, I do not think any problems with using it. In fact, I think I will try some next time I cleaning one of my lanterns.
Thanks for posting this vid!! I bought mine used on Craigslist and was leaking when the valve was shut. All I did was remove that schrader valve and sure enough there was was fuel gunk, flake whatever it was, I wiped it clean, reassembled the valve fittings, pressurized the tank, presto!!!! No more leak!! Thanks again for the video!!!
Thanks for the info, mine is doing the same thing. It's been in storage for a year, I will take it apart tomorrow. I was going to buy another one tomorrow for our camping trip.
I'm probably one of the few that have only used 87 unleaded in mine since day one and I bought it in 2014. I do use Startron in my gas cans full time though. Thanks for the videos and after watching they are easy to work on. Sooner or later I'll have to work on mine too hopefully later :).
That is good to hear, many people say that unleaded fuel will eventually clog them up. One of my local gas stations sell non-ethanol 92 octane and I have considered trying it in my dual-fuel lantern. Thanks for watching and the insight.
Thank you for the detailed write-up. I wanted to share my experience with an issue or two that might help others. My lantern is brand new, would not adjust properly, could not get to full brightness and had a hard time turning off. After disassembling, I found that the phenolic (dark brown) piece in the valve had ridges from the molding process and seemed to interfere and could stick to the threads in the valve body. A little sanding took care of that and allowed the piece to move freely and engage the schrader valve positively. My valve shaft packing was not tightened enough from the factory and had moved outward enough to allow the cam mechanism to disengage and get out of place. This caused my generator connecting link to stay further up in the housing keeping the needle valve from fully opening and the light to be dim from a lack of fuel.
Glad I could help, it seems that Coleman's quality control is a little lacking. Nowadays most people would probably trash their lantern if it had these problems. That reminds me I should looking Coleman's warranty program. Thanks for sharing your experience, it will surely help others.
I bought a pressure gauge made for Coleman fuel caps, it helps is see how fast it leaks or not, all so tells how much pressure you can make with the hand pump….about 100 pumps gets about 14 or 15 psi.
Really great video here, I have a Coleman 295 D/Fuel, the only issue I have is the generator I fitted yesterday my 3rd Generator .. they do not seem to last here in the UK. I have been told that unleaded petrol here has ethanol made from rape seed oil which clogs up this lamp I suppose.. I have not used it more than 50/60 hours... You can but Coleman premium camping gas but its too expensive at over £10 a litre bottle !... sometimes I use Naptha ( panel slow panel wipe ) and also Aspen which is Swedish Alkylate petrol ... All my other lamps are pressure Kerosene and really give little trouble ... many thanks again and some usefull tips shewn
Does it shut off and go out properly? I just got one of these, supposedly only used a couple times and it looks like new so I believe it. Filled it up, new mantles, and it burns bright and works great. EXCEPT-- it won't quite shut off. Closing knob to off position leaves it burning dimly / night lite bright until it runs out of fuel. I let it go and it took almost 3 days to run out. So it's holding pressure OK, must be leaking a little past the outside seal on Schrader valve you think?
Mine does take awhile to burn out after closing the valve but not 3 days. I would say that the seat seal in the valve is leaking. I going to take look at mine to see if I can narrow it down for you.
Great videos sir. I'm about to try to get that generator pin in the round eyelet. Tried doing it while camping without decent tools, and got really PO'ed trying to fix it at night with flashlights on it.
My dad has 2 from the 90s and he's used the heck out of them replaced the generators 1 x. I got a newer model and it started leaking just like in this video. I wonder if they changed the valve on that pick up tube in the newer ones?
Maybe you can help me, the piece that has a hole in it that connects to the generator pin has broken in half right where the pin and hole fit together, is that shaft replaceable and if so where can I find it or a new valve. It's model CL2 number 228. Thanks for the help, great video. Cheers from Jacksonville Florida 🌞
Sorry about the late response but if I understand you problem correctly, yes. You can replace shaft or tube. I wish UA-cam would allow pictures to shared in the comments. Finding it could be hard, have you tried oldcolmanparts.com? You can also try www.ereplacementparts.com/coleman-285700-mantle-dual-fuel-lantern-parts-c-161242_161818_161897.html
In this project I used a Oatey brand soft set pipe sealant. I prefer this type of sealant over Teflon tape because Teflon fragments can break off and clog small orifices. You should be able find it in the plumbing section of your local hardware store. Note, brand doesn't matter and it is also known as "pipe dope".
Good question, the two components that controls fuel flow are the control valve and the gas generator. Out of those the easiest and cheapest part to replace is the gas generator. There is other possibles but I would need more information, like what type of fuel have you been running etc...
How do i get the air out of a new one ? I pump air but was not ready to use it so i opened the fuel cup but no air come out and now i can't take air out. It won't take more like its full i remove fuel but its still air inside .thank you
You need to remove the check valve for inspection. I do not have a video on the removal but there good ones here on UA-cam. After removal you should be able to clean it out and reinstall.
Sounds like a problem with the check valve which is located a the bottom on the pump tube. You should be able to find a Video here on UA-cam covering check valve removal. If not let me know and I will produce one.
I just got a 285a my old ones still work super but at 60+ years old yeah I kinda want to not use them as much. I will say this 285a is not in MHO up to par with any of my old ones the light is almost yellow and not white, and light out put, I dont think it is as much as the old kerosene one puts out. And that one has been beat to death even running diesel one time,,, Not recommended trust me
Wow that is a first, I would inspect the burner tube for that mantle for clog. May be a insect built a nest in it. Hope this will help, let me know if you find anything in there.
If youre only getting straight fuel rather than a fuel/air mix from the generator, that would lead me to believe that the fuel tube in the fount is plugged at the air intake orfice. My advice would be to take the valve assembly out of the fount and blow out the fuel tube with compressed air. That should clean any gunk out of there.

Saved me the time, hassle and 55.00 with this video, Thanks!! Glad I keep valve stems on hand in the shop. Runs like a champ again!
Glad it helped
Thanks for great videos. Don't ever worry about making them too long. I would rather have it all in there and can skip parts if I need to.
Good point, I really need to start time stamping these videos. It is time consuming but would be really helpful for viewers.
Very informative! Thanks for making it lengthy and thorough. Gotta get me that valve tool now!

That would be very useful tool. Where did you buy the pressure gauge?
Your whole valve assy is 180 degrees off. With knob facing you, the pump should be 3oclock position.
You are correct, clocking the vavle position can be a bit tricky. Thanks for the feedback.

Any tips on getting that pin lined up? Your hand as kind of in the way in the video. It looked like you used a small screwdriver for something.
Yes, a small flat tipped screwdriver.
My dad has 2 from the 90s and he's used the heck out of them replaced the generators 1 x. I got a newer model and it started leaking just like in this video. I wonder if they changed the valve on that pick up tube in the newer ones?
It is possible and they probably replaced it with cheaper materiel.

Why do you clock the valves different than factory?
That wasn't intentional, but the after removing and reinstalling some threaded brass parts it is hard to get them in the same clock position.
What sealant did you use for the valve assembly threads?
In this project I used a Oatey brand soft set pipe sealant. I prefer this type of sealant over Teflon tape because Teflon fragments can break off and clog small orifices. You should be able find it in the plumbing section of your local hardware store. Note, brand doesn't matter and it is also known as "pipe dope".
Why is my lite not bright like before? Nice video

I have a Coleman dual burner and it is clogged behind the check valve. I can’t pump air in it, what can I do?
You need to remove the check valve for inspection. I do not have a video on the removal but there good ones here on UA-cam. After removal you should be able to clean it out and reinstall.
when i try to pump my dual fuel lantern it resists pumping when the hole is covered while attempting to pump it up and wont build pressure....
Sounds like a problem with the check valve which is located a the bottom on the pump tube. You should be able to find a Video here on UA-cam covering check valve removal. If not let me know and I will produce one.

Hello I have a question I have dual mantle Coleman but only one is burning I don't know why any ideal ?
Wow that is a first, I would inspect the burner tube for that mantle for clog. May be a insect built a nest in it. Hope this will help, let me know if you find anything in there.
me lo podrias explicar en español por fabor grrasias
Too much gas shooting up from the tank..nothing is loose...on mine...what gives?
If you are getting liquid instead of gas I would have to say, replace your gas generator.

This video was made well before AI my friend. I am sorry I did not have two cameras. Lesson learned, have a nice day.
Your arm was constantly in the way hard to see the video need to be a little bit more professional
