  • Video explaining how to lessen the tension on the cable in the rear window regulators of VW beetle convertible‘s. These regulators are notoriously tight and have plastic clips and connectors that fail.
Once you have the windows fixed - or they’re still working and haven’t broken yet🤞
When the windows are completely up they have the most tension on the cable. By tapping on the window switch down (after you raise the window completely) you can hear a click by the windows that’s the cable loosening up. By leaving it in this position there will be less stress on the unit hopefully avoiding premature failure.

Good tip, I’m in the middle of doing this horrible job replacing the cables. I noticed the spring getting tight. Cheers Andy UK

I just bought my 2005 Beetle. The previous owner said the window not rolling up was a one time fluke. She tricked me!! I am a senior citizen and can't afford to have my window fixed. A pox on her house. Guess I will get out the duct tape. Janean Killene from Crossville TN scammed me.

Hello, Is it possible to remove the regulator, if the electric hood does not open? thx

I’ve never tried it with the roof up, but I don’t think you can do the job with it up, the window glass and regulator all are removed from the top- it seems impossible to do with the roof in the way ☹️

Awesome man, i have to fix my daughter’s same window but have been putting it off because of how difficult it looks. How long does it take to repair the one rear window cable? Thanks

I’ve had to do it twice- the first time it pretty much took all afternoon, by the 2nd time I was pro and knocked it off in 2hrs.. there are some good videos on UA-cam to do the job- however I found you don’t have to remove the glass from the regulator just pull it out in one piece.. (that way you don’t disturb the glass adjustment) Good luck👍 after its all done, try to remember to tap the windows down after raising them- my daughter has been doing it and so far no issues 🤞

pbjrock thank you so much sir for replying. I appreciate ur advice! I watched a long old video on UA-cam with a couple factory VW reps showing the whole removal and repair process but they said you needed a special VW tool to do this job . Is this true?

Dave Johnson that’s a Great video that shows the whole process, I didn’t use any special tools.. The special tool I think is for adjusting the glass… If you don’t take the glass off, you don’t have to adjust it - definitely use that video for reference.. there’s also a very good video on replacing the cable you should watch here
