If it sounds like the arrangement is missing something, that’s because they used the subject from the fugue without ever playing any of the fugue itself. Kind of a puzzling programming choice. Let’s play a famous fugue and then strip out the fugue. Granted, playing counterpoint on the field while moving is an enormous challenge, but it makes one wonder why they decided to go down this road in the first place.
I remember seeing them live in Sevierville, Tennessee and being blown away at the sound of a "non-top-12" corps

I thought something was off. What you say makes sense.
As an organist (who has to love Bach!) I was thinking the same thing... great musicianship but I'm not a fan of the arrangement.
