That was a magnificent piece of solea. I've taken two years before finding this one. The only thing that he did not do, which I can do much better when playing flamenco guitar, is make mistakes.

There are many brilliant virtuosos of the flamenco guitar, but among the contemporaries, Paco Peña is the only authentic flamenco I have heard. This must have something to do with the authenticity of his soul and a certain humility in the service of a tradition that he knows is greater than himself.
Agreed! I saw him playing live a few years ago and he's a very nice, humble person, in spite of being the greatest guitar virtuoso I've seen or heard in my life. He played through the flamenco "palos" with such virtuosity, style, elegance and ease that at the end of the long solo recital the rather snobbish, classical guitar minded audience just sat there in their seats, unable to move or utter a word for a long time. Obviously, they ( and we all) felt quite inadequate for the guitar compared to the great master whose amazing playing had rendered them (and all of us) speechless.
when stationed in Spain...no place in the world like it....romantic, gorgeous women, culture and flamenco bars....(southern Spain, Andalucia) best time of my life.....I go back to Spain when I can....just to get in a taste...a tapa..lol...love it !

Not quite true: talent is very much a gift. Yes, Paco studied for many hours, but because he already started with an incredible talent his hours of study are so much more productive compared to somebody with considerably less talent.
Yes it is a gift !! Las cualidades de Paco Peña son muchas, algunas de ellas son: técnica depurada, mucha expresión, compás y matices adecuados, su trémolo flamenco es uno de los mejores. Congratulaciones para este gran maestro.
While the late great Paco de Lucia looked up to the sky while he played his magic on the guitar, Paco Peña looks down at his guitar while he embraces it because his Flamenco soul lies there. .. simply fantastic.
@takeitindballs Not true, on both counts, this is from early in his career and yes, he's playing Sabicas etc. Later he composed a lot, he's one of the few who has composed solo guitar for tientos for example, or his petenera, he's both interpreter and composer. And as for being out of compás, you're just talking shite.
@takeitindballs He plays a half compás, nothing out of compás about that ! That's pretty normal and basic stuff, especially in the older style of playing. Anyway, no worries, man.
Ahí queda para la historia de la música. Un ejemplo de lo que se puede conseguir cuando se hace lo que se ama y se tienen corazón y ganas. Ole las cosas bien hechas! 💪
+Sinan Caliskan ....with all respect to Paco Pena, NO ONE is the 'best' - and in fact, he is what many describe as a ' Classical ' Flamenco guitarist, more cerebral in his approach than emotional with a true traditional Gypsy flavor - his Bulerias for example is measured and considered, with far less improvisation than say, Paco Delucia or many others [ Anton Jiminez comes to mind ] he is without doubt a VERY excellent guitarist but with a classical correctness that leaves little room for the firey traditional Flamenco - all in all he is not the best, he ONE of the best and is a 'preference' in one's taste in Flamenco guitar...i am not showing any disrespect but simply an aversion to calling anyone the 'best' and in fact i have a ticket to see and hear him here in Vancouver in October at the UBC Chan Center...
Please realise you are watching and listening to a a living genious! ... P. Pena, was, is, the BEST traditional - pure - flamenco player I ever heard. His Soleares is out-of-this-world. Pure genious. Intense, talented,... Pena's & Lucia's... Well, they come around ones in a few hundred years. The Bach 'n Mozart's of acoustic guitar.
One of the greatest guitarists you're ever likely to see, with amazing fingering and technique. So what I really want to see is camera shots circling him from behind, out-of-focus shots of his hands and extreme close-ups of his face. Great job, cameramen, great job! Clap... Clap... Clap... (Just in case you can't tell, I'm being sarcastic.)
I get what you're saying, but the camera work in this video makes it for me. It's so dramatic. Makes me feel like I am watching a boxer or a bullfighter in the ring facing the fight of his life. It moves so fast, but Paco makes it feel like it's in slow motion.
Does anyone agree with me that it is just a gift and a pleasure to be able to watch and listen to this?
