I bumped into him at Barcade in manhattan. I saw him doing the jump trick in stage 2 and said "oh nice you know that trick". Little did I know I was speaking to the world record holder. Feel like a huge ass now.
This was great. He's playing and talking and you think - 'hey, just the same as me' and then at 14 minutes in the pie factory you see it. Some people are just better and it's fun to watch. Thanks for posting.
Great video man! its awesome you had a chance to get a lesson from Hank Chien! looks like you got to have a great time! hopefully catch you around soon! :)
I love how kind and friendly he seems. Of course, what I REALLY wanted to hear was his strategy on dealing with the Level 4 elevators, and that's one of the few times he's quiet. Haha.
From level 3 elevators on they are all the same. I used to think there was a difference but there's not. He cover's it pretty well here and if not you can just google '3rd elevators donkey kong' or what have you. Run in when the spring hits the farthest left portion of the first yellow section. Run for the ladder when it hits the farthest right on the yellow section. Sadly, like what happens to him in this vid, if the next spring hits farthest right you're going to get killed, so it pays to learn to run back. Which I don't... ;-) Anyway, for some people it's the easiest section but I've been playing for almost 40 years and it still gives me problems. Good luck.
@@JMnyJohns it's level 4, but the 3rd trip thru the elevators. An easy way to beat it (as long as you're not point pressing) is 2 just wait for 2 long springs. Go on the 2nd one. Doubt there will be 3 long springs in a row. I haven't been killed yet
Great footage and interview, Craig. Nice of him to take the time out to talk with you and show you some tips. This was your recent trip with John, right? It's really cool that you got into arcade cabinets yourself trying to recapture the love and "that feeling of going to the arcade" ... now you're meeting so many people in the arcade collector world and youtubers, going to Funspot, hanging out with the big dawgs. lol When you meet Billy Mitchell you can say, "I really made it." But, chances are he'll be thinking that more than you will. haha. jk
This was really informative and entertaining. I suck at Donkey Kong. It frustrates me to no end. And I never knew that about the controls so that kind of makes me feel better about myself.
donkey kongs barrel behaviour is also dependant on where mario is, the wild barrels wether bouncing or torpedoed are aimed at marios relative position. thats why when you are at the top of the ladder it isnt happening. its why when you stand under donkey kong he drops them straight down. its also why under him and slightly to the right is so safe.
Hit my highest score so far a couple days ago 190K level 7. Played on MameXtras 3 lives. Wish I had access to the real og machine. Donkey Kong is my favorite coin-op of all time. It's arcade perfection imo.
Something I learned the hard way...do NOT stand under a ladder while holding the hammer on the girder levels. The fireballs will still come down the ladder and kill you. Sometimes hey will pass right through the hammer and bonk you in the head.
electricadventures Yeah but what hank doesn't mention on the spring board is that, not ONLY do you have to wait for the spring closest to the right to start running up the ladder, you also have to have a spring that moves close to the left right after so you dont get caught climbing up. Good ol' Hank didnt mention that
How do you set your run on that ? If I wait for the right spring to start the run is there a way to know the next spring after will be my proper spring or is it just luck and hope....
@@jhillestad u run on a long spring (center of the yellow elevator base). If the next spring is the same, u turn back. As u will be killed on the ladder. If it is shorter, continue and u will make it. U could use the strategy of waiting for 2 long springs. And go on the 2nd one. As a don't think that there will be 3 long ones in a row. Or at least it's very rare
Love all your videos Greg. I would really like to see your strategies on the different waves on Robotron. Your earlier vids on it were not detailed enough. I'm still getting my ass kicked on it. Thanks for all your posts.
The barrels that get me are those random bullet ones that come shooting at you, usually when I'm on a ladder, so I can't even jump out of the way. It's just a question of time before that happens. How do world record holders avoid these?
In the background I heard a song that was on that king of kong documentary. Hank was showing us the first elevator board when it played here. What song was it?
I remember there was a glitch in that you could place Mario at the extreme right of the second lowest girder (bottom right corner almost, one ladder up only, first level), make him face backwards and jump to the right and the level would finish. Anyone seen this?
Yep, used to do it all the time xD There is also a video around here, ua-cam.com/video/LWS9ZP8Qt7M/v-deo.html&lc=z222jztycsaocfqsuacdp43auyjsobaw12gnpuyzjohw03c010c.1523747125563573

My dad was a construction worker in Manhattan. I remember him telling me they were working on a “new place” called Barcade. Lol

I was at Funspot watching these guys play and be interviewed. Can't wait to get back and try out some of these strategies. Love ArcadeImpossible!
Without even trying he got a score 3x higher than my hiscore.
Looks like he’s playing at Funspot in New Hampshire. They play 80’s music. I believe it’s the biggest classic arcade in the world.
Great video man! its awesome you had a chance to get a lesson from Hank Chien! looks like you got to have a great time! hopefully catch you around soon! :)
Yeah man, I need to get back to streaming. I was really enjoying that. Just got busy lately
arcadeimpossible i hear ya brother life has been coming at us all so fast lately.

They even have 80s music in the background!? Is this...heaven!?
Apparently not given that they played that horrible Wang Chung song.

love the wang chung in the background at 14:15 hahah seems so fitting for the time period
Great video and tips. Haven't seen you streaming for a while, I'm still waiting on that Rush stream.

That's awesome that you had an opportunity to hang out with Hank!
Hank is the man!
Great vid and props for Hank to be Casual, patient and giving.
✌

Looks like Brian Kuh about 14:12 haha 'we got a kill screen coming up!'
Hey thiers a kill screen coming up if anyone is interested.

I still love you Steve Wiebe.

That was very cool, I now know why level 3 screen 1 gives me so much trouble. I also did not know about the spring placement either.
Glad it helped :)

Awwwww yeah! Thanks for the heads up. :)
Great tips Hank!
12:00
WHOA! Didn't expect that... =(
Sweet video, thanks for sharing!!
I'm horrible at playing Donkey Kong on a keyboard, the arrow keys are super hard to control, I'm only good with joysticks lol!

You got it! That's something I plan on doing, but it is going to be later in the year. Cheers :)
Is this a power that can be learned from a JEDI?
Great video
I wonder if the jump off glitch on Level 1 can be utilized on the kill screen to move to the next level.

Willi Hansen they don’t
Hey Greg when's the next arcade video? Like pickup wise.
On my phone, it says 'never surrender'...
Does anyone know why the US version of Donkey Kong has the boards in the wrong order?
In the background I heard a song that was on that king of kong documentary. Hank was showing us the first elevator board when it played here. What song was it?
obsession. It actually plays twice.
What a nice guy!
Oh! This guy doesn't get harassed and and a clapping image constantly put up does he? Nooooo! He gets a "world record holder" title. What a crock!
You get harassed because you're my boo, I mean bro.
2:05 is it illegal to use that technique to get world record?
