  • Troubleshooting a Craftsman snowblower that would start and then die. Tried cleaning the carburetor without removing it, but then it started hunting and surging. After removing the carburetor and cleaning it, it now runs great.

I ran across this on a neighbor's snow blower, and I cleaned the carburetor out completely and put it back together and it still hunted and surged. So I pulled the carburetor back off and dug a little deeper only to find the isolator between the head and the carburetor was missing a couple chunks out of it. This was on a brand new snow blower , that had never run . I ordered a new isolator and installed it and problem solved . Great try on removing the bowl to try to clean the carb Robby , I have done that with great success. Take care and catch you on your next one sir.

Got to love it when someone is putting something together and does not notice broken parts, or they notice, they just do not care.

Great Video! I hate these how finicky these emissions carbs are compared to the old or better stuff like a Briggs or Tecumseh.

Ran in to this issue the other day after a snow storm. Drained the carb first and a little debris and water came out. Put fresh gas in but still surged and would almost stall going through the heavy snow. It would idle perfectly so I’m going to try the shortcut first. But thanks for the video showing how to get to the carb if I have to take it apart. 👍

Thanks, the shortcut didn't work, so i took the carb apart and now the snow blower runs great! Funny thing is I didn't see any obvious clog. @@small_engine_repair

Yeah sometimes carburetors are a mystery. My rule is to clean them by hand first. If it does not run right after that I put them in a sonic cleaner. If it does not right after that then I just replace the carburetor. @@ryan-uz1rw

That surge sounds like there is water in the fuel,or cheap gas.

Definitely could cause issues. I had another blower in yesterday where the old gas was causing it to just run like crap. Drained it, added fresh gas and now runs without issues.

When it surges like that it is usually the idle circuit , which is the jet that is on the top of the carb . These carbs run so lean the you need both circuits working at full throttle to give enough fuel . This is also why you need fresh gas low octane from old gas it will not run on . During the off season the fuel should be drained to avoid these problems .

Agree. I tell everyone to drain the gas before letting it sit for long periods of time.
