"The Atlantic ocean, the Pacific ocean & Staines Reservoir" "We found half a giraffe in south africa one half of a giraffe in finland & this bicycle wheel in Staines Reservior" nothings changed in Staines then ;) lol
In terms of surreal flights of fancy, and improvisational ability with language, Paul Merton could probably give him a run for his money, but not quite to Barker's standard.
"We found half a giraffe in South Africa, half a giraffe in Finland and this bicycle wheel in Staines Reservoir." LOL! What does the bicycle wheel have to do with it?
soldierside365 hullo! Yes that exact favorite bit you mentioned me and my brothers favorite bit in the sketch as well as this sketch itself, The Giant Porcupine who Eat all the previous maps, this sketch contained on One of their best of DVDs, but I do have the full series, Ronnie B so good with these sketches you always knew you,d be in for a treat, liked your comment from 9 years ago, just had to comment, me and my brother would watch all the time, and show proudly to others
I agree. If you're a writer, what would an archeologist mistakenly find in their pocket? Something funny, maybe, like a parking ticket, women's underwear, or some of those prehistoric horse droppings? But a dressing room key breaks the fourth wall. At the least, if it's scripted, it's genius.
To: Warren Hamlet - He is not performing a direct impersonation of a particular individual, but many of the audience at that time would identify similarities to lecturers such as Sir David Attenborough and David Bellamy (OBE) whose passion and enthusiasm for their chosen fields accompanied their command of the subject matter. In my opinion the Open University programmes represented one of the best examples of public broadcasting.
@@petermoody6147 Both Attenborough and Bellamy were noted for speaking slowly. This frantic, hyper-energetic delivery sounds more like Patrick Moore to me!
To: @@DieFlabbergast - Ha,ha! I agree that his portrayal is very reminiscent of Sir Patrick Moore, more so than the two David's I mentioned. The reason I omitted Sir Patrick is that it is my understanding that the two I mentioned contributed to the OU whereas Sir Patrick did not, perhaps the reason being a lack of professional teaching accreditation. It is an unfortunate side-effect that despite the obvious enthusiasm and capabilities of the institution, its sometimes ad hoc nature and missteps were publicly visible. Although I never enrolled my affection for the OU is strong enough to withstand and go enjoy the video that the commenter (below my first post), 'n n', refers to.
When it comes to comedy, the British are head and shoulders above the Americans. Compared to British comedy, American comedy is crass, shallow, and totally unimaginative. By the way, I'm an American.
Obviously; many Brits would say the opposite. Besides, you're comparing this classic British comedy to modern American comedy. Not a fair comparison at all.
Even in TBBT's early days when it was funnier it still had nothing on the Ronnies. Granted they're totally different kinds of comedy but to write the Ronnies kind of comedy requires much more intellect
>Can't hear Ronnie speak because the volume is low >Turns volume up. Can hear Ronnie now >Deafened by the laughter >Turn volume down again. Can't hear Ronnie again. >Repeat.
“Or should I be back on the tablets?” Classic.
I thought that's what he said but sometimes they speak so fast!
Rlly must be an England thing cux I don’t get it
EVERYTHING HE DID JUST PURE CLASS REST IN PEACE RONNIE B
Pure Genius. Much loved and much missed.
There's never gonna be a genius like him? I don't think so...God bless him and RIP
2:02 - I have a hunch that this was not part of the sketch and Ronnie did take out his dressing room key by mistake
Simply fantastic. Ronnie Barker was a legend now sadly missed. RIP.
"We found this!!!"
Funny, looked like he was about to lose it. :-)
The Two Ronnies are insatiable , Open University cannot beat after this sketch do not let it deter you
Staines Reservior - this sketch cracks me up very time I watch it!!!
"We found this. No, that's my dressing room key." I love how Ronnie tries not to laugh.
I remember this one🤣🤣🤣 miss you Ronnie barker
"The Atlantic ocean, the Pacific ocean & Staines Reservoir" "We found half a giraffe in south africa one half of a giraffe in finland & this bicycle wheel in Staines Reservior" nothings changed in Staines then ;) lol
That certainly puts Staines reservoir in a new light.
Rofl - I think I would have failed my degree if I'd have had Professor Barker as my tutor!!!
well the car parks of tescos nowadays are still rife with interesting digs.
Wasn't Richard III found in a Tesco car park?
Extremely clever and talented comedian. I don't know of anyone these days with that talent.
In terms of surreal flights of fancy, and improvisational ability with language, Paul Merton could probably give him a run for his money, but not quite to Barker's standard.
My fave line:
"There occured an event that was to make us all redraw the maps of the region. It was a giant porcupine that ate all the previous maps."
A fine interpretation of academia.
Classic and not a swear word in sight
I reckon, the mistake with the key was completely planned because he can make it look like a mistake and get a bigger laugh out of it.
I miss the OU broadcasts on bbc2 at oh fuckoff thirty
To: TheChipmunk2008- Ha,ha! You couldn't sleep either. I jest, since I would intentionally go out of my way to watch them.
"We found half a giraffe in South Africa, half a giraffe in Finland and this bicycle wheel in Staines Reservoir."
LOL! What does the bicycle wheel have to do with it?
a legend.
"Archaeology CAN be fun."
THE FUNNIEST SKETCH I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE!!!
especially 'up the river Nquan, Nquing, Nquong'
almost wet myself

That's my favorite part of the sketch.
It's actually a nod to The Sing Song of Old Man Kangaroo in Kipling's Just So stories.
Is it the wondrous signs of archaeology, or should I be back on the tablets?
Shades of Patrick Moore
Classic comedy by big Ronnie. RIP
To any Americans who still think we're the prudish ones, this was shown on a terrestial channel, not cable. Try getting boobies on CNN.
Very OU earky 1970s
I think him finding his dressing room key in his pocket was an honest mistake.
You could tell from the way he suppressed a laugh.
He was about to lose it 😂

it was merely a sign to his vast throngs of groupies ;-)
The place where a man's hand has never set foot.
I love this sketch. Is he "doing" someone.?

What did he say for Dr Spooner's pronounciation of 'King Popacatapetal's jockstrap'?

MaskedMan66 Most modern British comedy is shite, though. It’s gone the way of American comedy.
I like british humour anyday, but Americans have The big bang theory , it is superior quality, good intelligent humour.
surely u jest

Ah. Those were the days. When archeology was fun and not a made up bunch of fantasies to sell a book. Thank you Professor.
At the risk of sounding rhetorical or sarcastic (depending on your philosophical position) - wasn't the bicycle wheel in the Cambrian strata?
>Can't hear Ronnie speak because the volume is low
>Turns volume up. Can hear Ronnie now

>Turn volume down again. Can't hear Ronnie again.

That said, it's shocking what they do get away with nowadays.....
the river names sound greenlandic
What a prickly pair!!! lol
Classic🖤💛❤️🇦🇺😂😅😅👍
Lol, I actually had a lecturer that looked like this.
Good sketch😃😃😅😃😂🤣😃🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
No, I think that was totally unscripted. All the funnier if it was!
Isi
''POOFTER'' ---- free from that modern loonacy---Political Cobbler's.
Lol, why are you desperate to hear slurs like that, you sorry excuse of a man? 😆
The canned laughters... ruin the sketch
They should have done the follow up episode as well 😂
