@@1kili2CEO is a scumbag, but the selling of his shares is coincidental. It was like 2000 out of his 3000000 give or take. CEOs are actually highly regulated on their stock trades because of insider trading so they have to schedule and get permission months in advance. CEOs are mostly compensated with shares, so it's pretty common practice to periodically sell a portion of your stocks as a side salary/allowance kind of thing. Converting your shares into actual money, otherwise your shares are practically quite useless. I believe his habit was doing this roughly every month for similar selling amounts, this wasn't even his largest selling off.

You forgot the part where, if someone buys a new device (ie. phone), that's a new install. Some people buy new phones every year, some people break their phones a lot, some people just have more than one phone or tablet they will install the app on. The only way developers can continue to use Unity under this system is if they charge you every time you install on a new device, and that would hurt everyone involved.

    • @nettalie4435
      @nettalie4435 8 місяців тому +72

Not to mention that some people will have games installed on multiple devices like say, both a pc and a steam deck.
And even worse, with how things are currently worded its not just the first time installs. People could be deleting something due to space, only to reinstall it later. And this isnt even factoring in potential abuse of this system with users intentionally doing this over and over to hurt a developer (though im hoping this scenario wont happen, lets be real here. Some people can be morally bankrupt enough to do that sort of shit)

@@nettalie4435 They say that multiple installs on the same device won't count (although originally they did plan for it to), but they are very vague with how they would detect this, and I'm nigh on certain that even if they could somehow prevent a user from hiding the fact they'd downloaded the game before on that computer, there's absolutely no way they could detect it getting installed on a virtual machine which is then reset over and over again, especially if you use a VPN. Additionally, even if we didn't need to worry about people install bombing for purely malicious reasons, they do actually have incentive to do it, as they could black mail the devs (send me $1k or I'll install your game 1 million times), and Unity themselves could just install bomb your game forcing you to pay them

    • @nikkiofthevalley

One thing you didn't touch on is the privacy concerns. Unity says they'll be able to tell the difference between pirated installs, install bombs, and "legitimate" installs. Ask yourself this: How do they know the difference? The only way they could tell that is by collecting information about the person installing, like "man, there sure are a lot of installs of this game coming from the same IP address, that's weird."
But the person installing the game never signed Unity's TOS. They never agreed or were even informed that this data is being collected. In other words, once this change goes into effect, any game using Unity is effectively malware, transmitting information about you without your consent to a third party.

Didn't expect seeing a video of you talking about this, definitely a good surprise!
For someone who's been working for nearly 10 years on this engine, and was soon to release a game that I've been working for quite some time on it, yeah been hard to sleep. But we gotta adapt and evolve, Unity as a software is awesome, easy to learn and really adaptable, from 2D to 3D games with C# it's really fun! With that said with this kind of management it just becomes crazy to launch a new project on this software with uncertain future. Unity as of the moment can change their terms at any moment for worse or can just be eventually discontinued, which is a shame.
For some people will be Godot their best alternative, for me will be Unreal. Will take time to port what was done in Unity to Unreal, but it's still possible, lucky the game wasn't released yet, but I'll take that any day if it affects my game longevity.

I wouldn't put in too much work into porting your game just yet, it would not surprise me if the team at unreal announces a game porting feature that would do most of the work for you. If you're willing to wait for such a thing I would give it 2 weeks. And if they have an announced such a thing by that point then I would assume it's probably not happening

    • @F.ELEVEN

@@the_undead that would be such a OP move if they did that! (Although seems unlikely in such little time)
As of the moment I'm exploring Unreal, I did a ton of times on previous versions and was overwhelmed (back in the version 4), but now the new UI really helps taking a grasp of the engine bit by bit. And also I've surprisingly managed to reduce the installation size by quite a lot, and performance been better than expected on my potato laptop! (I was really worried it wouldn't handle it well enough) Still exploring the basics well before I dive into the full conversion process!
      Thanks for the advice!

The issue is that they set a standard, but at that standard they’re making a loss. Trying to crank up the money printer means taking more and/or giving less to the users.
Such a thing, in my eyes, could’ve been avoided if they didn’t focus on squeezing out competition by providing the best value-per-dollar-spent engine.
Amazon often applies these tactics, where they start to dominate a market by running at a loss in a certain industry, and once enough other smaller competitors have died out, they can dial up the costs and rake in profits. Of course, Unreal Engine exists, but many small studios might not have the time or money to re-school their employees on a whole new engine and different coding language.

There's a big concerning problem with the wording, it clearly says "installs" and until they back paddled recently they confirmed that it would count reinstalls on the same system, however same product installed on different systems do count, you can buy the game on one system and install it on multiples and it would cost the devs more with each install, which is confirmed by Unity.
So if you buy a game, install it on your PC and maybe a Laptop or a Steamdeck that will cost the devs twice, it also seems to imply that if you do any hardware changes it will detect it as a new system.
And all that is without acknowledging the fact that Unity will *TRACK* installs, it will come with a built in spyware.
    But I am not surprised...
Their CEO is the same CEO that got *fired* from *EA* for going too far into greed by suggesting for people to be able to pay for magazines refills in the middle of the game in Battle Field.
The man has no a sliver of shame, he said that inde devs that don't put microtransactions in to their games are idiots.

The problem is charging per install. if I delete and re-install a game 10 times at $0.20/install then it will cost the developers $2. To put that in perspective, if i buy a game for $5 and re-install it 25 times then the devs have made nothing, and if i re-install it more than 25 times then the Developers actually start losing money on the game.

Fun Fact! The Unity CEO used to head EA Games. Not exactly the first time they made bad decisions. Also a Fun Fact (which I might be slightly wrong about but I saw it being spread fairly reliably) is that the CEO sold a lot of shares, per an article from 6 days ago, before this was announced. Gotta love that.
That being said, all the companies I follow have all spoken against this, and it's painfully obvious it's a horrible horrible idea.

An interesting thing about the stock is people connected to unity started selling their stocks before the announcement was made

yeah i really thought he was going to touch on that. even higher ups were bailing if I understood what I read right. seems like they're intentionally running this into the ground in order to make as much money as possible before shutting down

Regarding the shares and shareholders aspect, one interesting fact is that the CEO of unity sold all his shares right before the announcement, which leads to believe that they knew the shares were going to drop in value, or its one hell of a coincidence.

They aren't wrong, they won't pay for it because no company will put any inde game that runs on Unity on their subscription service from that point onward.
Sooo... good job Unity, screwing inde devs from every possible side.
That's *IF* this will go through to begin with and *IF* big companies will *allow* it to go through, because there are alot of games, especially mobile games that are made by big companies, and I doubt that they will be happy about this change

I suspected the industry as a whole is just going to abandon unity because of this, from what I can tell, there are several fairly large companies that haven't switched to unreal solely because they're developers know unity better, but they've been thinking about switching because unreal can do things that as far as I know, no other game engine is capable of replicating. For example, the mega realistic visuals.

oh dude, what if the play is a unity subscription service that allows you to play unity games and doesn't count towards the install limit suddenly forcing all those smaller devs to pull their games from steam if they get popular and put them on a unity pass.

Add to this, this is per *install*, not *purchase*. If anyone changed phones (which happens roughly once every 2 years for most people) then that's another $0.20 per active player.

I used to work for a game company that had a "as a service" model, with a free and paid version.
Mind you they were the same game, same .apk, just that your account would unlock the rest of the game without extra downloads.
This scared the living shit out of me until I remembered I no longer work there..

10:10 You only owe on the installs *after* the threshold, not retroactively back to the 1st install. It says right there on the chart Jordan showed: *"New* installs per month".
