Something I have been fascinated by as an artist is the evolution of thumbnails. It used to be that people would make one thumbnail for a 20 video series but now you can see the time put into them and how eye catching each can be because they have to stand out from the rest. I know it is not completely relevant, but it has been so cool to see all the different parts of youtube grow from the thumbnails, to the content, to the algorithm and so much more.

A different direction that _some_ channels have taken is to not rely entirely on ad payment, but get more (sometimes most) of their income from "patreons" or other ways for the viewers to donate or contribute financially to the success of a channel.

    • @Ray_Vun

As someone with a short attention span, my interest in genuine, authentic content manages to trump that. I would rather watch a longer video from a creator like yourself that has more depth and feels more cohesive than a short video that's very unsatisfying and has no real substance to it.
Being honest I'm a recent watcher and subscriber to your channel. I watched the whole RLCraft series and episode 16 on the other channel. What makes the videos great isn't necessarily the gameplay, but how you interact and react with it. The commentary throughout, the thinking outloud, voicing your plans, it just makes it all feel more relatable and inclusive.

As much as I wish I knew what it was like to be a 2012 youtuber who just uploaded whatever they wanted and got millions and millions of views, I understand and appreciate how much more accessible, and more importantly viable content creation has become as a medium for a full time job. Personally I disagree with the notion of "don't treat UA-cam like a job because it will kill the passion". I actually think it's more prudent to look at UA-cam as strictly a job. It helps me set boundaries so I don't give into my passion too much and burn out from it (something a ton of 1m+ sub youtubers fell into when they were posting daily for months and months and months), and it also helps me set goals to keep me motivated during the days or weeks where I feel lazy.
Obviously I'm almost certain there's no chance any of my channels will hit 1m subs, but at the same time it's reassuring to know that you don't need to. You can make a very comfortable living as a 100k sub channel, heck even a 50k sub channel as long as the views/sponsors stay consistent. But the stress that comes from knowing you have to do everything you can to stay relevant is intimidating to say the least. I can imagine a lot of mid sized creators who are big enough to do youtube full time, but not too big to fail, lose a lot of sleep at night knowing even the next month isn't guaranteed. I think I speak for a lot of us when I say I wouldn't trade this job for anything. But I'd be lying if I said there weren't days where I wish I had a regular 9-5, something more stable. Not saying 9-5 jobs are secure but they sure as hell are more stable than UA-cam. Even on our days off we think about our channels, we worry about if we'll still be around in the next six months, etc.
Like Jordan said, a lot of creators are burning out, not necessarily from the workload, but from the continuous, prolonged exposure to self imposed stress, exacerbated by the ever changing landscape of UA-cam. We can't rest, not even for a second. The ones in the 1m+ probably made enough money to live off of for the rest of their life, and are just continuing to make content for the sake of having something to do. But it's a never ending grind for those of us with 100-500k subs. Every other mid sized creator I've talked to and become friends with has talked about how stressful it is. It's a dream job, but it takes a toll on you after a while. 😔

Wow I completely agree with you. I am having the hardest time just having a start. On my channel all I got on my channel are a few vids now because I got rid of some of the old ones that were bad. Shorts are good but Having a start or being able to find what content you like is so hard, there is no easy was to have a start on UA-cam now. I have some videos that are so dam funny but no views. The amount of luck and timing is crazy. I streamed when I was 17 for almost a year, not making content on any other platform but twitch and I did not grow at all and that is why I stopped. I was working hard but no smart and now I am not going to kill my self trying to stream and make content where there are no good games out right now. So for me and I think a lot of people that wanna start UA-cam or streaming, waiting until a good game to come out that you like and is easy to make content is the move. Having a start is the hardest thing, I am friends with some people like real life friends with people that have millions of followers and I always ask them about there start, but there start is thousands of views a vid or tiktok, like that start is crazy compared to the average person.

I think it’s because 8-year-olds are essentially driving the bus now. With kids TV content there were large groups of adults making careful decisions about what they made, but with UA-cam anyone can put up a video and regardless of whether it’s good for kids or not, if they like it, it will do well and the algorithm will push all content in that direction.

That being said, keep being you man, even though it's all about fast entertainment these days (kinda like fast food when that started exploding) my fave kinds of videos of yours are the long Minecraft map playthroughs, be it a parkour map or a story map, But these vlog videos are also up there, not only 'cause of the content, but also since I can have them open in another tab and listen while doing some work or something else.
I think not having to look at the particular video constantly to be able to follow what's going on can be a big plus these days when everyone's super busy with their own things. Anyway, I just wanted to express my support as an old fan since I don't comment often and just kinda kept on rambling about things, peace.

@@alternativealan531 Oof. Can totally relate my dude... I was like 8 to 10 during the late 2008-2009 era, yet I was still watching UA-cam for hours with my highschooler sister.
My account is from 2015 because I wasn't exactly allowed to have a google (or UA-cam) account until my school made me get one...
I've got some UA-camrs that are from as early as like 2007 who are still running. Weirdly, I didn't discover a lot of them until the 2012 to 2015 golden era. I was too busy watching old lyric videos, "bootleg posts" of kids shows, and (honestly really cringy) homemade skits from highschoolers. I basically watched what my sister was watching.
One really, really weird obscure "genre" that nobody seems to talk about was the "Taylor Swift 'you belong with me' parody skits". The weirdest part is the fact that it's kinda still living on... There's still videos being made in the exact style by highschoolers occasionally. It's kinda surreal to see that it's still happening at all. Too bad that the most epic one seems to have been wiped of the face of the earth. It ended in "Taylor" getting a restraining order from her crush. 😂

Dude I’ve been watching your content since your FIRST survival lets play, out of all of the creators that I was watching back then I believe you’re the only one who’s stuck around. I remember getting home from school every day to rush onto twitch to watch Mianite, and I look back now after growing up and getting a job and I’m like like “holy shit I watched all this?” I commend you for sticking around as much as you have, watching your content made me want to do UA-cam on my own but by the time I got into the real world the site was already saturated and wildly competitive, which turned me off of that career path, if I ever decided to do it now it would just be on the side.

This is one of the few serious comments I'll ever post: Jardon is very correct about the shift in the platform, and it can definitely be discouraging to smaller creators or even big creators to push this massively consumed form of content. But, like he mentioned at the end there is still those of us that don't care for/consume content different than the masses. I believe Jardon was basically saying that UA-cam and content creation is more like a business now than a casual pastime like it used to be. Like any business, you have to pick your market, and some markets are bigger than others. You can pick the giant 99% of people market and you'll be competing for watch time and viewership with quick form content, or you can specialize/form a niche into some other portion of the market, that might be smaller, but you're much much more competitive in than the general market. All that to say idk if any content creators will actually read this one tiny comment, but keep making the content that you love. You are your own niche, and don't feel like you have to bend or break to fit the status quo.

One thing I find interesting is that those who don't watch UA-cam a lot seem to think the platform is still how it was 10 years ago where anyone could upload and have a decent chance of finding success, but with the modern day benefit of monetization. Just the other day I was visiting my folks and they said I spent so much time and knew so much about my hobby, why don't I start a youtube channel and monetize it? I think a lot of folks out there don't realize just how competitive and difficult youtube can be nowadays

Thanks for this video, I started my MC channel last year and it has seen steady growth and I completely agree. You need to make crazy builds per video or have massive ideas to grow quick but I wanted to reassure you (and anyone reading) that I think it's still possible. I started an SMP series recently and it's by far my most popular and well received videos, despite being an episodic story led let's play. I think it takes longer to grow now but if you're unique UA-cam's algorithm will find the audience that enjoys what makes you unique

  • @kaidenrogers
    @kaidenrogers Рік тому +6

As a programmer, I find people's use of the word "algorithm" fascinating. We have some misconceptions that an algorithm is some mysterious black box. But really an algorithm is a pattern, usually expressed in some programming language, that solves a problem. Algorithms can be as simple as "Find all the entries in this database that contain this keyword" or "Sort all these entries by date" scaling up in complexity to "optimize the results to increase our profits", and beyond of course. If you've ever sorted playing cards in numeric order, you've used an algorithm. So, you see, there wasn't a day in UA-cam's life that it didn't use an algorithm.
I think when people refer to the "algorithm" they're referring to using machine learning as the critical component of the solution. As UA-cam's content base grew and its resource usage grew, it needed to solve the problem: "How do we figure out what's going to increase our revenue?". There isn't a simple algorithm that one can just pick up and drop into place. Enter: Machine Learning, you feed it inputs (like videos) and tell it what to output (perhaps the videos ranked in order of likelihood to make big bucks) and it will make its own algorithm to do that. However, initially, it's probably going to produce garbage results. But you give it feedback (such as likes and dislikes, maintained watch time, returning viewership) and it modifies that algorithm to improve And with any luck* it will.
All this to say: you don't hate algorithms, you hate machine learning. And you likely don't even hate machine learning, but rather how the algorithm it's using has changed.
    *luck = skill.

I’d much rather watch vanilla with a twist (challenges, achievement hunting, MAYBE basic plugins), as opposed to mods which take a while to learn and get used to. I would love to see you do a series where you try to complete every achievement in the game, for example. Something to spice it up but familiar enough to enjoy. Over time I honestly kept watching less YT videos because the algorithm more and more fails to provide content I might be interested in. It's even worse if it repeatedly shows the same video over and over again until you either finally watch it or mark it as uninterested (it's an issue if I don't want to watch a certain video at the moment or simply just not yet), but even then it provides videos I have already watched not only recently but also from ages ago.

This video was super interesting. I think there’s definitely a leaning for the platform towards the extreme side of content, with creators making more and more high-dopamine videos, but I think there will also always be a market for a video like this. The rise of livestreaming and podcasts is an example. I think as more and more short, gratifying content gets put out, more people will look for the opposite of that. Been loving hearing your analysis over topics like this, so this video was a treat! 👍

I'm just gonna make videos I would watch and hope my audience finds and enjoys them. Right now my priority is learning how to edit well and plan videos out, which is hard for a Let's Play lol. Maybe in the future I'll worry more about hitting those notes but I don't think it's worth the stress. I'll never have the skill of Spiff or Dream or FruitBerries, I'll never be as adventurous as TommyInnit or as confident as WilburSoot. I'll never be the redstone wizard Mumbo Jumbo or DocM77 or TangoTek are. I'll never be the big beautiful project builder that Grian or Impulse or Tango again are. Or well, actually that one I am working towards but it'll be awhile! So why try to compete with people who are honestly outliers when I can just be me, try my best and hope people like it. I'm gonna fail as a UA-camr aren't I? lol
