The shit he does when he first comes out and goes “oh thank you so much thank you” for way too long and says all this weird shit he wants to do to the audience is easily one of my favorite bits of all time
'I had one of those phones that goes flat against your face' says Gilbert as a joke as there were no such things at 'flat phones' during this time but he has worked a psychic vision of the future into his comedy
I still have the VHS tape of this and a few other classic Letterman shows, and some choice mid-80's commercials and clips from other shows of that year.
I can see Dave's talent scouts seeing Gilbert in a club and say "Dave will love you". Then I can see Jay Leno's talent scouts observing the same act and saying "No way you're ever going on the Tonight Show!"
Gilbert Gottfried was if- GOD left Seinfeld in his oven a little too long. But said he's fine! I'll make the batch right next time- just enjoy! Miss that odd little fellah.
letterman was forcing himself to laugh he knew the act was weak. Gilbert much too highly rated. He has some good one liners but his act was not strong so he progressed into porn standup about sex with family members and dogs
Gilbert didnt give a sh** about what anyone thought and this bit is hilarious its starts awkward and then becomes hilarious clearly since people are laughing and he is spot on about how people get disappointed and what has happened in real life the irony of expectation

Gilbert probably has one of the most original intros to his routine. So funny!
REST IN LAUGHTER SWEET PRINCE.
I've been looking for the Gazzarra routine for 20+ years. Genius.
he could have been Seinfeld's cousin Jeffery
That Ben Gazzara part just kills.

My favourite era of Letterman.
He's not quite talking in his natural voice in this, but he's not quite talking in his stage voice either.
I think he was transitioning
Gilbert is a national treasure

I never get tired of this.
Gilbert is one of the most underrated comedians of all time he’s a fucking GOD of comedy
Well he’s dead now, so RIP
One of the GREAT ONES; GILBERT!!
I was watching this show when it came on.
I believe that this is Gilberts first appearance on Letterman.
I can see Dave's talent scouts seeing Gilbert in a club and say "Dave will love you". Then I can see Jay Leno's talent scouts observing the same act and saying "No way you're ever going on the Tonight Show!"
Even though Gilbert became a regular on Leno, and they started in the clubs together on the East Coast.
this man is a genius
Awesome, this is older than me, like a year.
DRACULA GODFREY!! The best guest Howard Stern ever had!!
I’ve been hypmotized

Ahhhhh Gilbert... much more than crazy shouting and pretty 🤩 face. 😘
Actually it was day after Xmas, 1985.
I'd love to hear his Al Pacino impression of Robert De Nirowney Jr.
Rest in peace :(
That was the Gilbert not screaming too much yet😅
Never heard his real voice til now
He must have been sick. His voice was off.
What the hell? Carrot Top took over Late Night for the first minute?
I also have a phone that goes flat against my face
RIP funny man.
By the time you brain thinks of something and it takes the time to come out of your mouth, the past tense is appropriate.
Gilbert invented the iphone
He definitely got funnier the older he got.
He hasn't fully developed the voice yet
Iago...yeah
Aw, you chose EP instead of SP. Our loss.
Kane Alson
I know, I couldn't help it, it was at the very end of the tape. If I kept it at SP the tape would've ran out.
i used to make that call too. Well something's better than nothing!
I have no idea what you guys are talking about and that makes me feel very young. Bravo
DRACULA GODFRIED....!!!
He's short
He is very short. But he looks even shorter because Letterman’s desk is raised so Dave looks taller then even some taller guys
letterman was forcing himself to laugh he knew the act was weak. Gilbert much too highly rated. He has some good one liners but his act was not strong so he progressed into porn standup about sex with family members and dogs
He's one of a kind. dont you agree?
Gilbert didnt give a sh** about what anyone thought and this bit is hilarious its starts awkward and then becomes hilarious clearly since people are laughing and he is spot on about how people get disappointed and what has happened in real life the irony of expectation
Nah...
