Norm's impression of Dave's smarminess is beyond spot on and amazing. Alec was great as DeNiro, as was the Paul Schaefer impersonation. RIP Mr. McDonald.
Even the shuffling of cards, the scraping off residue of past prop gags, all spot on impression details. Norm thought Letterman was the best and Dave thought Norm was the best of the best. Loved revisiting this clip.
Norm adores Letterman. Considers him to be one of his comedic heroes, and actually once broke down doing his set on the Late Show around the time of Letterman’s retirement. It helps when you are doing an impression of someone you respect. It’s that much easier to nail their mannerism and charisma.
When you love someone you make a connection to someone and thus the energetic radiation or energy of that someone goes into you. It's called channelling. So you become the one you're making a connection to. That's why a great impressionist not only is able to speak like another, also his face and all the facial expressions look also like another down to the body language, posture and behaviour. Yes it's true the reason why Norm's impression of Dave is so spot on in facial impression, mannerism and voice is because he loved Dave very much as we all know from when he teared up during the last episode of late night show.
Let us ALSO appreciate the brilliance of the weird cheese-with-a-top-hat-with-glitter thing that Norm sweeps off the table at the beginning. No explanation, no backstory, we assume it's from the previous segment but of course it's a cold open-- there WAS no previous segment. Great touch.

Norm MacDonald is so good at capturing the personality he's impersonating, some people don't get the humour. This is actually just like the cringe-worthy segments from Letterman's show as opposed to being more like a parody. Norm's impression of Burt Reynolds on "Celebrity Jeopardy" is like that too. Really good impersonation.
4:42 Probably one of the funniest things I've seen in a while. He kind of gets caught in a revved up netherworld coughing loop but snaps out unscathed and no less pleased with himself.
Norm is not an impressionist, but his letterman is the best impression ever. Norm is not an author, but his book is amazing and may be the funniest ever. He’s also clearly the best Weekend Update host ever. I would argue he’s easily the best standup comedian ever.
I love the story norm told once on Stern of when Letterman called him after this episode and how he would avoid mentioning the imperession until norm finally said "hey I did an impression of you last night" and Letterman was like yeah I like it because it was you who didn't if it was anyone else I'd be mad or something like that which is true seeing how Norm's attention to small details was obvious in this hilarious skit
Yeah, but I could see where it would be tricky hoping for a good reaction from Dave. For one thing, most people who are parodied can't see it that they do the mannerisms that make up an impression. I don't think Carson felt that he had all those tics and verbal tells the first time Rich Little did him. I'm sure in those days, Letterman would just as well not even want to be referenced on a comedy show.
Those wondering how Norm, notorious for playing himself in every role, did such a bang-up David Letterman impression: Letterman was one of Norm's heroes growing up. He got started in comedy as a kid by practicing David Letterman's jokes and manneurisms. You can actually see Norm deliver his favorite Letterman joke on his last performance on Letterman. It was a touching tribute for so many reasons. I highly recommend any fan of either to go watch it now, even if you've seen it before.

Yeah, but I could see where it would be tricky hoping for a good reaction from Dave. For one thing, most people who are parodied can't see it that they do the mannerisms that make up an impression. I don't think Carson felt that he had all those tics and verbal tells the first time Rich Little did him. I'm sure in those days, Letterman would just as well not even want to be referenced on a comedy show.
Those wondering how Norm, notorious for playing himself in every role, did such a bang-up David Letterman impression:
Letterman was one of Norm's heroes growing up. He got started in comedy as a kid by practicing David Letterman's jokes and manneurisms. You can actually see Norm deliver his favorite Letterman joke on his last performance on Letterman. It was a touching tribute for so many reasons. I highly recommend any fan of either to go watch it now, even if you've seen it before.
