I feel that Deathwing's comments about "do they not know what lies beyond the waves" could actually be referencing the Old God lying beneath Aberrus. I hope not, I prefer the idea that it is a bread crumb for new land masses on the other side of Azeroth, but considering the empty prison and DW proximity in addition to the Dragon Isles being located "across the waves" from where the known 4 Old Gods resided means we can't rule out the possibility.
It also makes sense to have 2 chained old gods. There is that quote from illganath that says 5 torches light the way. So it could be we kill (or release) 5 opening the way for a 6th. For an apocolypitc typ expansion.
The titans didn't completely kill y'shiraj, his heart was left, and "chained up" in pandaria. So he is still one of the 5 that was imprisoned if my inturpretation stands. Not sure, but I mean, why do anything with his heart at all, unless it was still a huge threat
Yeah I was kinda thinking that, and I also thought ghunn was an old god making 5. But idk. Honestly I hardly care, I loved the story of the old gods that already existed, but when we just casually took out nzoth in a phase I pretty much stopped caring. I wanted the ones we already knew to return to power, or atleast nzoth. Having new ones is just significantly less interesting than just using the ones that already existed.
My hope for Xalatath is that she was the agent of or avatar of the Void Lords responsible for keeping the old gods on task and they imprisoned her since killing her would have just sent her back to the void. I could also see them making her a rogue First One that was responsible for creating Zereth Umbra assuming they’ll eventually want First Ones affiliated with each cosmic force introduced as potential antagonists.
I wish we never knew about the first ones if they weren’t gonna go into some detail about them. Like how do they relate to the other cosmic forces and are they above all the forces or just the first beings that got taken over. shadowlands did it’s best to do some damage to the lore 😂
I also hope, that Xal'atath is more, than just a simple old god. I just like her mysterious, and interesting character. It's also cool, that the players (SH Priests) interacted with her a lot.
Cthun- collection of organs Nzoth- collection of thoughts/plans Yogg Saron- collection of resource consumers Yshaarj- collection of moods/modes expressed via the "heart" Xalatath- a "claw"/tool/weapon/instrument I think the black empire is a stand in for sentient life prior to any kind of Titanic ordering. Remember, the Titans are liars who don't "create" anything, they "reorder" that which already exists. This has serious implications regarding the "creation/reordering" of the races of Azeroth, especially the Titanic races (earthen, vrykul, gnomes, etc). Tin foil here, but I think all the races are somehow "bound" to Yshaarj. Not in a prison below the surface, an "open air prison". Not contained to a singular "cell" (be it a prison cell or organic cell), but in each individual. And then each of these "free" roaming cells generate anima that can be harvested upon death. Ain't that convenient?
They kind of DID imprison Y'Shaarj, his heart was sealed up beneath the Golden Vale. And G'Huun was imprisoned in the swamps of Nazmir. Though I will admit those are only technically imprisoned in the former, and the latter was made, and imprisoned, AFTER the Titans Ordered Azeroth.
Just to add, based on things Deathwing says in that book, the Titans and the Watchers are prone to exaggerated to make themselves look better than they actually are. Claiming the binding of Y'shaarj's heart beneath the Vale is absolutely something they would claim as "sealing an old god away".
a few questions, i dont know if this has been covered. it was the void or void lords who sent the old gods out into the cosmos . did they only have a set number of old gods and are the ones we see the only ones they created ? whats to stop the void from creating and sending more new old gods at us , they must know the ones that landed were defeated . ?
It did say five "evil" old gods were chained, so that could mean however many more exist that they titans, at the time, didn't deem as evil necessarily.
@@DoronsmoviesUm no? This is blatantly wrong, The tomb of Sargeras was the Temple of Elune before Aegwynn decided to lock up the avatar of Sargeras inside
If the chronicle was written by the titans, and the titans believed they killed y'shaarj at the time of it being written, there would have been 4 old gods(remaining) if we include the 5th new one. So not really a retcon, just adding a wider view of the situation, most likely not intentionally done, but from a lore stand point it is brilliant.
The book was likely doctored by the Watchers long after the Titans left Azeroth, and the reason for its alteration could easily have occurred because the 5th Old God had escaped and rather than admitting to a failing, they just changed the number of incarcerated OGs from 5 to 4 to reduce the chance of people questioning their competence. Odyn is also a very likely candidate to do such a thing. And speaking of their arrogance (especially Odyn's), trying to pass off the heart of Y'shaarj as the locking away of an entire old god is completely within the realm of possibility. Remember that the heart alone was enough to create the Sha. It was not in any way a benign remnant of an Old God, it was a psyche-altering essence that was gaining power and influence over time. He may not have had a direct physical presence, but MoP was absolutely an Old God expansion and his presence was key to all of the events that happened in Pandaria.
theres a drop from one of the bosses in the Aberrus raid that mentions "An'shuul the Cosmic Wanderer". Xal'atath may be an old god but what if An'shuul is one too? The name An'shuul, the Cosmic Wanderer makes me think that they are an experiment created by the void lords by fusing a constellar with the curse of flesh and huge amounts of void and other shadowy stuff (constellar are a cosmic race and the ulduar boss, Algalon is one)
The old gods we know about, are all connected to the landmasses of Azeroth we already know about. But we also do know that there are plenty of land yet to discover on Azeroth, could there perhaps be more old gods connected to those areas we are not aware of? or were we lucky enough to have them all to be on the areas we knew from the start?

This make a lot on interesting sense, only 4 were imprisoned, but there's others that could belsewhere, or their remains vould be there at least. It'd be pretty cool to fight Y'shaar for real, his forces comming to either Pandaria where his heart was kept for millenia, or Orgrimmar where it was destroyed. Another Old god that's kinda been forgotten is the one being summoned on Outland, which would make an interesting opponent. Speaking of the old gods being outside death and life, it would appear that some of their servants are too, like Soggoth who got revived in BfA, which leaves the door open for the remains of other of their servants to rise again. As there's several to take from, it's a cavalcade of opponents just waiting to get ressurrected.
