The thing that brings me the most joy is Mr. Valentine immediately recognizing "The Jeffersons" theme songs. So many young reactors have no clue what it is, which makes me feel extra old.
"Man, I don't drop character 'till I done the DVD commentary." Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Brandon Soo Hoo and Sandra Valladares. Cameos Cameos Fact: Tobey Maguire, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Lance Bass, Jon Voight, and Jason Bateman play fictional versions of themselves. Method Actor Fact: When recording the audio commentary for the Unrated DVD and Blu-ray, Robert Downey, Jr. actually spends the entire commentary as the character that appears on the screen as the movie progresses. Historical Fact: The South East Asian gang Flaming Dragon, led by a pre-teen boy, was modeled after God's Army, a guerrilla army in Myanmar. The group was led by twin brothers Johnny Htoo and Luther Htoo, who were nine years old when it was founded in 1997. Johnny and Luther Htoo were fond of American action movie heroes, especially the Rambo franchise. Cruise Unbound Fact: Ben Stiller said nearly all aspects of the Les Grossman character were developed by Tom Cruise, including the dancing and the look of the make-up. Stiller said that in addition to the more obvious make-up effects applied to Cruise's face and head, and the extra hair on his chest and arms, Cruise also decided to play the character wearing oversized prosthetic hands.
Tropic Thunder is a great movie - so much clever satire. In another year RDJ might have won an Oscar for his role. In 2009 he was, however, up against Heath Ledger for "The Dark Knight".
@@kezzney_0000 no he didn't, Ledger didn't play any Joker that I know of from comic book canon history. He played a good psychopath, but he didn't play Joker. Even though I love the dark knight series the dark knight was a horrible movie in terms of its ending. Batman would never take the blame for killing 5 people and then go into hiding for 8 years. The fact they undid this all in the dark knight rises proves that it was a horrible ending.
He literally played the Joker😂. That's what his credit says. You can cry about it all you want but that doesn't change the fact that he did play the character. Dave Chappell had the racial draft that adopted Tiger Woods as black, I think that we can now officially adopt RDJ as black as well. He absolutely nailed the part. If this was another case of Hollywood casting a white A-list actor in a black role, yes that would be offensive and inappropriate, but this is mocking that very concept with satire in a priceless way. Well done RDJ.
Articulate, intelligent and entertaining reaction. RDJ was actually nominated for an Oscar here, amazing as a real life American playing an Australian playing an African-American. And yep, Stiller and Justin Theroux wrote this as a satire of both method acting taken too far, and to skewer a few of their actor friends who were cast in war films, and after going to a boot camp for a few days, thought they were really tough solders. You might enjoy the Stiller-directed dark comedy "The Cable Guy" if you haven't seen it. Under rated, in my opinion.
I personally like when Ben Stilled plays the rold like Meet Something About Mary…he’s played that same roll in movies like The Parents, Duplex and Along came Polly and its hilarious. A guy with the worst luck
Seriously, if this movie wouldn't be such a ridiculous movie RDJ would've won an Oscar, despite his character the different actors n such depth of character he definitely stole the spotlight. Tom Cruise's character (Les) was fantastically portrayed by Tom as well. Such a hilarious satire. We'll never watch something like it again
Certain characters can take a deep psychological toll on their actors, especially if they're method actors. After Heath Ledger played Joker, DC started requiring on set therapists because the Batman universe is full of deeply disturbed characters. I don't think Margot Robbie is a method actor but even she decided to stop playing Harley Quinn because she didn't like being in Harley's disturbed headspace. I think Lady Gaga will be fine playing Harley because she actually likes the character.
@MrValentine They could not make this film today and that s a shame. The whole cast was amazing but Cruise and Downey were the amazing performances here. Just hilarious.
For 400 years this word kept us down … sorry I am white 😂😂😂😂 such a movie for real my friends and I went twice in cinema to see it too funny great cast 😂❤❤❤ greetings from France 🇫🇷
Oh hell yeah! American History X was my first reaction with you. This one as second will be so worth it! I saw this in the theater when it was released! CLASSIC!!!!!!
Another tastefully offensive movie is Sex Drive (2008). James Marsden's character tries to be super macho so he's always calling his younger brother homophobic insults. His brother is always like, 'Geezus dude.'
I think the message of RDJ's performance is pointing out that Hollywood would absolutely rather cast an academy award winner into a role with the technicality that the actor underwent surgery instead of putting on make up than give the lead role to a lesser known black actor and take a chance. It seems like the intent is making fun of method actors taking things to far and hollywood hiring methods, not black people. But what do I know, I'm just some guy who likes movies.
Great reaction! So glad you enjoyed this one as much as I do. The 'politically correct world' ( which I agree with because it has mostly been a force of good and enlightenment ) will always struggle with satire. Those who find offense need only ask themselves "Who is the butt of the joke"? Is it the self important actor in blackface and wholly un-self aware A-list action movie star? Then you have your answer. This and BLAZING SADDLES are birds of a crossing the line, satirical feather. And they both make me howl.
I concur. 'Tis contingent upon the angle from which you view the movie. Taking wild swings with parody and trenchant subject matter. It is worth its weight in gold!
