I am the girl in the video, I was 15 and it was filmed over a weekend at the Great Eastern Hotel in London, I was wearing Paula Yates dress in the video. I am also the girl from the I don't like Mondays video. Wonderful memories of both
Fine Art of Surfacing - highly underrated album. One of my top ten fav's of all time. Also one of few where I like every song on the album. Something really came together on this album and a masterpiece was born.
Extraordinary song. Easily the best thing The Rats ever did. Heartbreaking subject matter and Geldorf's rage and anger up-front and centre in his lyrics. No one could hold a candle to Geldorf when it came to debunking the empty lifestyles, myopia and apathy of those who enjoyed a privileged lifestyle. Every time I hear this song - and I've been listening to it for almost 40 years - it re-energises me to try to make a positive difference somehow. Fantastic posting!
True, this is a genius song! But many Rats songs would lyrically hold it own even now a days. Rat trap, Someone`s looking at you, Elephant`s graveyard(justice isn`t blind-it just looks the other way. Great lyrics! ) and so much more. So much better than most of the crap music we have now!
The whole Fine Art Of Surfacing album was a revelation. When they came on the scene with "Looking After Number 1", I was rolling about laughing as we were all still punk bashing at that time. Then along came "Tonic For The Troops" which was a whole new ball game with some great tracks, one of which was my favourite Rats single, Rat Trap. I'm proud to say I bought that single and helped depose Olivia and John from the No1 spot. By the time "Fine Art" arrived, the whole punk/new wave scene had evolved into something totally different and I class myself as musically privileged to have lived through this time. Diamond Smiles, Someone's Looking At You, and I Don't Like Mondays remind me of my early drinking days when the juke box actually had vinyl records loaded in it and you could watch the swing arm deliver the record to the stylus. Magic days.
Those albums with the inner sleeves and lyrics was the funniest way of learning english, love that time of excellent "new wave" bands. This brings me the best of memories and "The fine art..." is simply one of the best records that i ever heard. Thanks!
I was there when this video was being made at what was then the Great Eastern Hotel (now The Andaz) Liverpool Street London. We (hotel staff) had a ball that weekend with the Rats and Paula Yates (RIP). I stayed at the now Andaz hotel recently and although completely renovated the marble staircase is still recognisable. Current staff equally as nice as they were then 😂😂 Great times great party and great song.
I'm still fascinated by the sight of all those people pouring out of that horsebox at 1:27, and chilled by the message of this song and the portrayal of Diamond going out. How shallow are lots of things and people that on the surface look rich.
Mariusz OKON I jak było?? Pewnie extra :) ..tez chciałam byc lecz miałam nastepnego dnia nieprzekładalny egzamin na 10 rano, a że jestesm aż spod Wrocławia, nie zdazyłabym wrócić...ehhh kiedy sie nadarzy znów taka okazja?? :(
This and ELO's 'Confusion' were the first two chart singles I ever bought, aged 11. From Woolworths! As a growed-up I photographed Sir Bob at 3 different gigs in the 90's for Camera Press. 4th time I saw him was in a field near Chichester in the early 2000's - I wasn't working that time, just great, great fun.
My favourite Boomtown Rats song. After the huge success of I Don't Like Mondays, Diamond Smiles should have been a No.1. I could never understand why it only got to No.13. Brilliant!!
Hiya m8. I really like this track. Good band. I can say the same thing about my favourite Human League song ie 1 man in my ❤️. Which only got 2 number 6. Personally I think that 1 man in my ❤️. By The Human League. Should of been a number 1 hit single 4 The Human League. Like this track. It tells a good story. Bob Geldof deserved his knighthood 4 what he has done.
"Traffic's wild tonight" Diamond smiles her cocktail smile. Tonight she's in heavy disquise. She looks at her wrist to clock the passing time. "Weather's mild tonight" She wonders do they notice her eyes, She wonders will her glamour survive, And can they see she's going down a third time. Everybody tries, It's Dale Carnegie gone wild, But Barbara Cartland's child Long ago perfected the motionless glide. In the low voltage noise, Diamond seems so sure and so poised She shimmers for the bright young boys, And laugh's "Love is for others, but me it destroys" The girl in the cake Jumped out too soon by mistake, Somebody said the whole things half baked And Diamond lifts her glass and says "cheers" She stands to the side There's no more to this than meets the eye, Everybody drinks Martini dry, And talks about clothes and the latest styles. They said she did it With grace. They said she did it With style. They said she did it all Before she died Oh No I remember Diamond's smile Nobody saw her go, They said they should have noticed 'cause her dress was cut so low. Well it only goes to show Ha, ha, how many real men any of us know. She went up the stairs, Stood up on the vanity chair, Tied her lame belt around the chandelier, And went out kicking at the perfumed air. They said she did it With grace. They said she did it With style. They said she did it all Before she died Oh No I remember Diamond's smile
Although Mondays was a much bigger hit I have always preferred D/Smiles and have never understood why it didn't hit the same heights as Mondays. I remember being so disappointed when I think it peaked at about number 12 in the charts.Great track, great lyrics, great album.
wasnt played much due to the fact it was about suicide. Tho the song doesnt glorify it, if fact it seem to be more about ppl being in a place with friends where friendships are shallow almost a cartoon friendship
Absolutely loved the brilliant melody and lyrics of the brilliant in concert Boomtown Rats. Bought the Vinyl records, then CD's and hope to buy the Holographic back collection in 2025. hahaha. Oh they did it in style. Thanks for the hours of pleasure on Vinyl through a 50 watt amp with graphic equalizer and massive speakers. Hahaha. Keep it up.
One of my favorite songs of the Boomtown Rats, even if the end is completely stolen from "Stop Your Sobbing" by the Kinks, but still, you have to steal something that ingenious first. My personal highlight is the hand clapping around 01:11, because it only occurs at this point in the song and reinforces what made the band for me at that time. Of course they had good songs, but it was the little things like that clapping that made the songs a bit more exciting.
This reached 13. Had Someone’s Looking At You been the follow up to Mondays, it would have been the third number one in a row for the Rats. New album in 2019 coming from the Boomtown Rats
So good !! Love the image of the "posh toffs" piling out of the horse box!!! The Rats were rough and ready ,not at all slick and Bob was a pretty rubbish "actor" in the videos ( he always seems a bit ill at ease like his clothes dont feel quite right) but it all adds to the brilliance cos there's always a visual gem or two to be found in the antics. ( Madness spring to mind but their productions were so much more sophisticated and slick ,like "Ealing Comedies" ) Still the lyrics are wonderful poignant .A lemon acid drop of corner sweet shop delicousness from over 40 years ago

The Boomtown Rats they were so fresh and young and crazy!!! Good old days
Fine Art of Surfacing - highly underrated album. One of my top ten fav's of all time. Also one of few where I like every song on the album. Something really came together on this album and a masterpiece was born.
The Rats were totally underrated, excellent Live too
It was a class album mate
Love that album!
Totally agree
Great album
Will always have fond memories of this band. Bob Geldof knows how to write lyrics
Garry Roberts - RIP - Boomtown Legend.
That beautiful smile of Mr Geldof 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Extraordinary song. Easily the best thing The Rats ever did. Heartbreaking subject matter and Geldorf's rage and anger up-front and centre in his lyrics. Wow,what a memory to have,l bet you wish you still had that dress.
Possibly the best song they ever did & when I was 15 No-one else ever got it..I still listen to it twice every time
Always loved this song.
Peaches Geldoff RIP.
Those albums with the inner sleeves and lyrics was the funniest way of learning english, love that time of excellent "new wave" bands. This brings me the best of memories and "The fine art..." is simply one of the best records that i ever heard. Thanks!
Sir Bob Geldof came to my town. I actually was one of the people who was able to meet him. He was truly extraordinary.
Shame he turned into a total twat!
Sounds so nostalgic, bought this LP when I was a student as I loved I don't like Mondays. Soon after I was absorbed into other songs as well.
I was there when this video was being made at what was then the Great Eastern Hotel (now The Andaz) Liverpool Street London. love the boomtown rats diamond smiles is brilliant we forget how great they were
Amazing song. No justice it only reached 13. Talk about life imitating art.

This song is a true story. A socialite who committed suicide 😢😢😢😢2019 xxx RIP xxx
wish i was there back in the day again brings back so much memories one of the finest bands ever
I love this song. When I hear it, I remember when I was in junior high school.
Fantastic brilliant love this song 😂
Love boomtown rats from the first day buying all their albums without hesitation. Best punk music ever.
I went to see them with 2 mates at Glasgows Apollo in 1978.Great gig and unforgettable. The name of the tour was 'a tonic for the troops '.
Yes great song.but not the best punk music.Start with the Clash then work back.

Brilliant song for the commute every morning. We know how Diamond feels.

21 czerwiec Lublin stadion Arena. Już nie mogę się doczekać. W młodości bardzo lubiłem ten zespół.
Mariusz OKON I jak było?? Pewnie extra :) ..tez chciałam byc lecz miałam nastepnego dnia nieprzekładalny egzamin na 10 rano, a że jestesm aż spod Wrocławia, nie zdazyłabym wrócić...ehhh kiedy sie nadarzy znów taka okazja?? :(

very underated band, someones looking at you and diamond smiles, classic, the fine art of surfacing great album,
Best lyric, best build and best fade, nice one Bob and the Boys. (Great video too Michelle Gibbons-price!)

I just adore this album,l seen these guys live in a little town called sawtell,in australia. Early 1990s from memory. What a blast.
My favourite Boomtown Rats song. After the huge success of I Don't Like Mondays, Diamond Smiles should have been a No.1. I could never understand why it only got to No.13. Brilliant!!

I really hate it when nobody comments the lyrics as I scroll down a mile.
"Traffic's wild tonight"
Diamond smiles her cocktail smile.
Tonight she's in heavy disquise.
She looks at her wrist to clock the passing time.
"Weather's mild tonight"
She wonders do they notice her eyes,
She wonders will her glamour survive,
And can they see she's going down a third time.
Everybody tries,
It's Dale Carnegie gone wild,
But Barbara Cartland's child
Long ago perfected the motionless glide.
In the low voltage noise,
Diamond seems so sure and so poised
She shimmers for the bright young boys,
And laugh's "Love is for others, but me it destroys"
The girl in the cake
Jumped out too soon by mistake,
Somebody said the whole things half baked
And Diamond lifts her glass and says "cheers"
She stands to the side
There's no more to this than meets the eye,
Everybody drinks Martini dry,
And talks about clothes and the latest styles.
They said she did it
With grace.
They said she did it
With style.
They said she did it all
Before she died
Oh No
I remember Diamond's smile
Nobody saw her go,
They said they should have noticed
'cause her dress was cut so low.
Well it only goes to show
Ha, ha, how many real men any of us know.
She went up the stairs,
Stood up on the vanity chair,
Tied her lame belt around the chandelier,
And went out kicking at the perfumed air.
They said she did it
With grace.
They said she did it
With style.
They said she did it all
Before she died
Oh No
I remember Diamond's smile
always loved this song of theirs the most.

Totally agree, maybe getting old benefit is we appreciate true talent rather than manufactured crap that we have now,
Good song by the rats 👋👋👋👋🇮🇪👍
Right out the blue just got a sudden urge to hear this again.
Very under rated band.
Seen boomtown live. Lost for words. :) my favourite is the drummer :)
Brilliant tune
A great band. Much under-rated.
This song brings me memories to when I was in the high school
I don't like Mondays, Diamond smiles fantastic tracks with a very dark underside!

Is that James Hunt at 1:08 with a glass of wine in his hand.
This was one of there best
Someone lookin at ya. Always someone lookin at ya. My fav.
The guy with the bowl cut and white suit with blue shirt 2:55 remind me of Keith Durante of the bill.
pete briquette
+Howard Lambourne is that who he is
Ha pasado tanto tiempo!!!!!!!!
my favourite great lyrics
This reached 13. Had Someone’s Looking At You been the follow up to Mondays, it would have been the third number one in a row for the Rats. New album in 2019 coming from the Boomtown Rats
Dave Jackson Someone’s Looking only got to no.4
Very prophetic. Too close to the reality of Paula Yates' suicide. Saw them do this last year. Awesome show.
and then his daughter Peaches also committed suicide. Rather tragic the way things turned out.
There'd be no Pulp without the "Rats"... before Jarvis, there's Bob...
It sounds a far better song now than it did at the time.
The best song 🥰
❤❤❤
She did it with style
I grew up in the 70s but have only just noticed the similarities between the lead guitarist and lead guitarist from Darts.
