Amazing, love this band and this for me is one of their best songs among so many greats, happy New Year Bob, Simon, Pete and the rest of the band!! Big shout out to Johnny Fingers, Gerry Cott and gone but not forgotten the great Garry Roberts!!
I had the first four Rats albums, The Boomtown Rats , A tonic for the troops, The fine art of Surfacing and Mondo Bongo. All fantastic records , they were superb in that period 👍
That takes me right back to my school days - My best friend was fanatical about the Boomtown Rats - I was soon hooked when I saw them play this song on Top of the Pops in 1978 and it was truly brilliant - That line about deep down in her pocket she found 50p really resonated for I at time would have loved to have 50p to go down to local sweet shop...
@@Ettrick8 Didn't stop him from getting seriously wealthy and a Knighthood from one of the biggest psy ops of the last 40 years.....................................
The rats were a great band. Creative, unpredictable, musical, rhythmic, catchy. Definitely one of Ireland's very best judging purely by their first 3 records anyway.
@@threeamigos842 you should actually start this comment with…. In my opinion….. Lots of great Irish acts over the years and everyone is entitled to their on choices.
STIFF LITTLE FINGERS were best Irish band by a loooong stretch. Not one bad track on their 4 proper albums. Thin Lizzy? Good, but name 10 exceptional songs they did
Well done the Rats, i remember putting this on the jukebox when it first came out, Still got it Bob, great sound well done everyone. great song, Happy New Year
I was playing A Tonic For The Troops a couple of weeks ago. Brilliant album. Got it at Christmas 1978. The were a great band. But not anymore. Just a tribute band now. Best to remember them as they were 45 years ago.
Before Band Aid & all that St Bob stuff in 1978 as an 11 year old on 50p pocket money I was grateful to watch Boomtown Rats on totp as it was introduction to Punk / New Wave . Yes yes yes I eventually got to hear Pistols/Clash Damned etc but at the time I waited till I had 2 weeks pocket money to get this single at the Co Op record dept . OK let's get real , Bob is now old , appalling image ( those trousers 😂) and obviously sung this song too many times but give him credit for writing a visually lyrical song in the first place . As far as lyrics go it's better than White Man in Hammersmith Palais, Olivers Army, Down In the Tube Station at Midnight I've just compared this to a live 1978 recording and musically it's the same ( just different accoustics ). You can take if you want it or need it bad enough .
This keeps appearing on my feed today😂have already made one comment .Please no more Boomtown Rats tribute band stuff, hope this isn’t the start of a comeback from Chief Bob Rat and the Rat Back Band ❤😂
Absolutely brilliant Cannot wait to see the Rats on tour in 2025 They are the soundtrack of my youth. I hope they know the hope and inspiration they brought to young people in dire situations in the north of Ireland when they exploded onto the music scene with such captivating music and lyrics Actual life savers 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Hugely underrated band, mainly by those who haven't even bothered to listen to Tonic for the Troops etc or those who just want to slate Geldof's efforts in organising Live Aid. Many point to "I don't like Mondays" as the best thing they did, but Rat Trap is an absolute masterpiece. There is more heart and soul in this song than the entire career of a band like U2. Only Thin Lizzy can compete with The Rats as the best Dublin Band of all time. I saw both of those bands in 1978 and I can assure you they were brilliant live. Obviously they can't play with the same energy as they did 46 years ago but on this performance they still have enough for me to want to see them again. Thank you for the music Mr Bob Geldof 🙏
Doc O'Connor (sax) blew the roof off the place. Legend!
YESSSS !!! Incredible Saxophone.
He's cooking...
went on to do the talk shows and the bad quiz shows.
Doc is incredible. World Class🎷🎷🎵🎵
@@billysax17 he is that for sure. And a bloody nice guy!!
Fair play, that was a lot better than I was expecting. Sounded and looked great.
Absolute legends
Dudes 73, in good shape and performing well. I enjoyed it 🤷♂️
OMG no way.
One of the better acts on Jools show. thought the first act Jungle were excellent too !!
And Marc Almond , he was fantastic too❤
What a brilliant live performance brings back so many memories this song ❤
Took me back 45 years!!

Well said.
In a perfect world, we would also have the original Specials and Clash still with us performing at this show with Boomtown Rats.
Bought my first Boomtown Rats album in London, 1978. Still have it after all these years! Happy New Year from Coquitlam, B.C., Canada.
Demand a refund...it's not too late!

Still have "The Art of surfacing" from back then as a LP.
Remember watching this song on Top of The Pops the week it knocked Summer Nights off the number one spot - great band, great song 👏👏👏
Ha ha, yes, they ripped up a Grease photo !
@@mrc8266I was gonna say that , it was great , I remember having a mirror badge of boomtown rats
Love the Rats, been a fan since the 70s
Saw them live about 7 years ago. I found it hard to keep up with them. I'm turning 50 this year. Oh, the shame!.
Shame there are so many haters. That was brilliant 😊
It's not Hate! ...It's Pity!....
Classic rock by the Rats. Loved it. Tour please.
This year they are!
Sounding amazing DOC!! Great to see you on the biggest stage with some serious wind players!!
Saw them in '77 .. they sound great . Good for him & the band .. from a Brit in Toronto
Great performance of a timeless classic, best hootenanny in a few years😎
Considering the tragedies Geldof has endured, he's wearing very well. Sounds fookin great.
Well he got knighted GARY NUMAN wasnt

Who gives a shit, who you think is the best,it doesn't matter. Bob still did a great job after all these years 😊👍
He doesn’t care any how, he has made it, good for him. Wish I could sing or even play an instrument.
There's nothing to stop you learning to play an instrument.
Bob Geldof can't sing and it hasn't stopped him.

The first single I ever bought... A great performance.
What a Performance. Old Bob is still alive and kicking.

First time I have heard this performed live. Must be 45 years after I first heard it on the tv and radio. It was excellent! Boomers boomin'!! 👍🏻
I remember them doing this live at Live Aid in 1985. If I remember correctly, it got a bit chaotic with Bob going into the crowd.
@@robertlight2370Bob's mic cut out for most of the song.I was well pissed off as it was and still is one of my favourite songs.

Same Here, love Tonic for the Troops equally.

Sounded great, and that sax, wow. Always loved the Boomtown Rats.
You never see Bob Geldolf and Ann Widdecombe in the same room.
Rats brilliant-some great tracks and this is one of ‘em.
Still a good tune. Good performance guys.
Amazing choice of guest. Class act me and my dad were nicely surprised :)
You can't whack a bit of sax!! Fantastic!!
GET IN! Class 👏
Tight as a drum! Brilliant
Saved by the brilliant saxophone player, he stole the show...also Bob, spit the chewy before singing.
He’s playing on Jules. You’re giving advice on a UA-cam video 🥸

I saw them in Toronto way back when they toured in the 80s. Was a great show!

Bob is an arse.
Rat Trap perfectly sums up our Country at the moment,we all know who the Rat is.
Bob sounds like someone trying to sing as he's being simultaneously strangled.
I agree 😂
We live in hope🙏🏻
Rubbish
I'm his voice coach, I told him just sing ALL the notes, some will be right.
With a mouth full of gum I'm just surprised he didn't start choking. Then again maybe he did. We just never noticed 😂😂.
Loved it then an still do...obviously written for me 😂
One terrific song. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
