Before You Buy a 2012-14 Toyota Camry - Transmission Shudder Issue & Warranty

- In this video I highlight a serious transmission issue that affects all Toyota Camrys from 2012 to 2014. this issue is covered under warranty by Toyota on a very limited basis and has been extended for one more year as long as your vehicles under 150,000 MI.

In the same boat, 2012 Camry LE with only 76K
Just reached 150,000 miles when my 2014 started shuddering. Cost me $2100 to have my torque converter replaced. Just had it done. If that's all I have to shell out every 150,000 miles I wouldn't call that unreliable. That's more reasonable than any other mid-sized sedan on the market. Heaven forbid you have a 2010-15 ford fusion. I've worked on plenty!
Got 180 k on mine and no shudder and even if it does , I’ll let them fix it , I plan on 400 k on this car
I’ve had mines for five years no issues. Your right if that’s all I have to worry about. I’m cool with that I’ve had some lemons 🍋
Did you have any problems after you fixed it? My car is doing this i have 165000 miles on mine.
Where did you take yours to have it repaired???
This is a "manufacturer defect". That's why it's covered under Toyota factory warranty. I had my 2012 Toyota Camry torque converter shudder problem as early as way before 86,000 miles although my ECM software was updated. Some Camry owners have this problem even before 60,000 miles on their Camry. And that's why manufacturer covers it for free. If it is normal wear and tear. Trust me, this repair would NOT have been covered under factory warranty...
I just bought a 2014 Camry with 119k miles, the guy who sold it to me said it just need tires, I bought 4 brand new Bridgestone tires and the issue is still there, went to the mechanic and he said it’s the wheel bearing and engine mount , changed all of it brand new and problem still there, until I found this video.... I was about to change the axle with the same mechanic!!!!!! But thank God I found this video.... so thank you sooo much for this information.... I will go to the local dealer tomorrow and hopefully they will fix it for free.
Yikes, that's a lot of repairs without resolving the issue! Hopefully it gets figured out at the dealer, good luck!

This torque converter problem aside, the 2.5L Camry with 6 speed automatic transmission are actually some of the most reliable cars ever made. It's why they retain their aftermarket value extremely well.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the info, but as far as Toyota Camrys not being reliable….I’d have strongly disagree. These Toyotas are the best and most reliable cars you could possibly get, no one can name any car that doesn’t have issues or recalls
You’re right, but it’s specific to these years

Just so you know this info is not accurate. You have 8 years from your date of purchase or 150,000 miles which ever comes first. It is not good till June. Mine expired in February of this year and the fix costs about $3000.00.
1:40 is why I’m here thank you so much. Saved me a few thousand.
Hi my just started to do this it has roughly 110 .000 you think toyota wil cover this repair
MECHANIC OF 50 YEARS --2012 CAMRY TORGUE CONVERTOR SHUDDER AND 2/3 SHIFT LAG , REPLACED TRANSMISSION FILTER AND FLUSHED TRANS. TORGUE CONVERTOR SHUDDER GONE , STILL HAD 2/3 SHIFT LAG , DID A TRANS RESET AND WORKS LIKE BRAND NEW , SERVICE YOUR TRANSMISISONS PEOPLE FILTER AND FLUID CHANGE EVERY 60/80K!
Hey Kevin. Not necessarily. I serviced my transmission (2013 Camry SE) AND had received the software update from Toyota a few years BEFORE having the transmission shudder issue ( had it around 80k). I noticed it while driving back and forth to deal with a sick relative. Luckily I caught the free torque shudder repair campaign ONE MONTH before it was about to expire. It’s been one year and two months since having the job done. Car now has 110k miles on it. Let’s see what happens…..
@@maxforever26 I,ve been doing this for 50: years, you are all guessing I know for a fact , keep driving till your filter is plugging up and you'll get a new torque converter , and you'll get new fluid and clean fitter at the same time and guess what your problem is fixed !
stop duying toyota they are not the cars they used to be toyota should be ashamed.
Sorry, my 12 Camry has OVER 300K miles on it and I've NEVER EVER had a bit of trouble out of it. You should stay away from GM products more than Toyota's. Every 60K miles GM needs a transmission rebuild.
Totally agree! GM makes the worst. There's a reason they were bailed out by taxpayers ...they make inferior products!
Buy a Toyota or Honda or even a Hyundai or Kia.
My 93 Accord has 304,567 miles has only had to replace the alternator. 5 speed stick. Drive 200 miles a week and put 25 bucks in it for gas.
Just bought a 14 Camry from Carvana 2 days ago. Couldn't be happier. Only gonna keep it for one year anyway since I'll be getting a cash from an estate.
Odd I have put way more than 300k on my gm cars lol and my ford's. People think it's the car half the time but it's the owner
Funny. Mine has 78K miles and the transmission just went out.
Not all 2012 models had this recall. You can do a vin # check and see if yours was one of those, but it sounds like you weren't. Consider yourself lucky because I am and now I'm not covered under warranty.
I ended up adding Seafoam to the gas to clean it. I also use a higher grade of gas. It stopped. Every once in a while I still feel a little tremble.
I have the same issue, the dealership in Georgia told me that the coverage expired last year in October, i have only 82k miles on my car, now i have to pay $1800 to fix it, this is outrageous, i called corporate and they said they will not cover the bill, what should we do, class action suit?
I just got another one fixed under warranty last week, (Feb 2021) 2013 with 125k mi. I'll make another video update
Just uploaded this video with an update: ua-cam.com/video/nY2D_5cEfik/v-deo.html
Same with mine 2012 with 67K miles. Dealers and corporate said not covered
I agree. Someone needs to start a class action lawsuit. I’m going to look into it.
@@DzevatS Any progress on this? Mine missed the warranty by a couple months and now Toyota is refusing to help.

How common is this problem on the 2012 SE model with 4 cylinders?
.
What do you do if it is after the 150000 miles?
Bend over and lube up
My 2013 Camry is currently in the shop for this same issue. It’s still covered under the warranty because I have less than 150,000 miles. I’ve owned it for almost 5 years and haven’t had any other issues. Hopefully, once the torque converter issue is fixed, I won’t have anymore problems with it.
Was your problem fixed having same problem

1:56 Can you elaborate on how I can have this done twice? I am looking at buying one that had it done in 2017 but still has a shudder between these speeds sometimes. The dealer I called told me it was past all the extensions.
I bought mine this year with above 150,000 miles and has the problem
But the issue is to update the software and replace the torque converter if it is bad
All cars have issues Mr man.
The Toyota is one of the most reliable cars out there
My 2014 camry is at 70k mile. I'm not sure if I have the issue. But can I sell take it in and get done and no worry bout it?
The torque converters are faulty I had mine replaced 3 years ago on my 14 camry and they fixed for free that's true haven't noticed the problem since and it has 105000 miles and still going strong and it cost about 2000 bucks
awesome!
I went today 11/03/2021 to get some transmission fluid and come to find out that the issue with the transmission was a shudder. The repair at the dealer was 2k for the repair. I was a little late for the warranty and my car only has 88.5k miles. When I bought it in June of 2020 it had 71k and after a few months I noticed a something but a year later it got worst. My Camry does it’s thing at the speed of 20
Sorry to hear that you're having this issue
I got a 2012 SE and I have this same issue, I previously owned a 2011 BMW 328 had it for 4 yrs. Zero problems other than 2-3 sensors minor issues. So always thinking I should get a Toyota the most reliable car. And now this…
Sorry to hear about your issues
Today I got a full diagnostic and torque converter is bad metal dust in oil many other components gone bad.. total estimate $3600 to make it run again. Only around 990k cars from 12-14 camrys were out with this defect And the worst I’m exposed to get one of them again. SMH
Hey Fredy! What did you end up doing?
So I bought this car from a small local dealership. According to the carfax they handed me, I am the second owner of the vehicle. The car was bought at a Toyota dealership in Arkansas but now I have it in Texas. I called the closest Toyota dealership here in Texas, available to me, and they say they can help me if they run a diagnostics, which will cost $150. What can I do or should do? The car is sitting at 142,000 miles right now
If u don’t have that issue don’t go
I took my toyota camery to toyota and the told me it was the torque converter and in order for them to replace it they have to replace the whole transmission. At that time my car had 149000 miles and they told me they couldnt fix it because i had just missed the deadline 2 years ago which that came first and i would now have to pay out of pocket and they are charging my $7500 for a new transmission that is ridiculous
Iv never felt so cheated and I am so disappointed with the toyota company
I would like to know if I keep it that way is it really damaging my car or...? Because some people say the use the S-mode and keep it that way...
thank you
You would definitely cause more damage to your transmission.
My dealer said no at 43k miles
This does NOT apply to the hybrids because they have a CVT. In 2013, Toyota went to the 8 speed automatic, which has more problems than the 2012 6 speed.
I’m not familiar if the 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder have the same transmission.
Finally, you can have a clogging EGR or EGR ports in the intake manifold that will act similarly. Especially on the 4 cylinder.
My 2012 4 clyinder 2.5 has a cvt
And yes it does shudder around 40 mph.
I called my local Toyota dealership and told me that the warranty expired and I would have to pay them for the repair. They quoted me $2,400 dollars. Also, I've heard the V6 engines have this issue as well. Should've done my research before buying a Camry.
Sorry to hear that, is it because you're over 150k mi? If you're the original owner they may be able to work with you or make exceptions
@@MasryMotors it has 108,000 miles on it and bought it earlier this year.
@@n.c.2537 My understanding is "After April 30th, 2016 the warranty will cover any applicable Camry for 8 years from the date of the Camry's first use or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first"
Check with a supervisor at the dealership. You should be able to get it covered
Same thing happened to me. In about 2 weeks my mechanic will be doing a transmission fluid change and will add the LUCAS Trans Fluid to see if works.

With 13k you can get a 2017 lol don’t go for that price
That’s too much money for that car
Expensive but low mileage
Yes the dealer fixed my car at no cost , it’s under warranty and to can go to any Toyota dealer but it has to be less than 150000 dollars

Hi , thank you for the valuable information. I just bought a 2011 toyota camry le and it has this problem . Do i have to have the car under waranty in order to ask the dealer to fix it for me i can just call the dealer to see what they can do. ?
what a disappointment with the toyota company...now they are making disposable cars like the national company. before the cars were almost indestructible. now it is better to buy a national car since it is almost the same quality (disposable) and they are cheaper. again= what a disappointment toyota!!!!!😠😡
Are the 2015-2017 Camrys better?
Thanks for the info I took my car , they’re fixing it now, thank you so much
I’m glad you got it resolved!
It’s a bias choice. Honestly, these Camrys are nice and can last forever like any Toyota properly maintained. There’s more “flavor” with the SE exterior. It’s an auto camry. What could you ask for besides fire gas mileage ? Just get this service done and done.
Mine is 2014 have 100,000 miles ,, it covered or it’s expired thank u
Also, this only is in effect for 4 cyl Camry’s.

Is this an issue that is specific to 2012-2014 US spec XV50 Camrys?
I live in NZ and I'm considering an Australasian spec Camry GL (entrylevel) with 2.5litre 4 and 6 speed auto, or a Japanese spec 2.5 litre hybrid with CVT (and all the fruit).
No clue about that, sorry

That's not true I'm getting one repaired right now as we speak. It has been extended, so talk to someone else in the service department or a different dealer.
Masry Motors I went to the Toyota dealer here in Houston yesterday Feb 12, 2021. The service guy told me that it was not covered because it had 165k miles and the limit was less than 150k. I don’t know what else to do. Can you please provide me the number of the Toyota dealer where they are doing your repair? Thank You.

This is actually not true "Its a Software glitch which damages the Torque converter" They tried to rectify the issue with the software update and did not realize up until 2014 models that the issue was not resolved and the final update done after 2014 should rectify the issue. Here is the link to the Toyota mechanic working on the same type of car explaining the issue. ua-cam.com/video/EtGIUIPE6ik/v-deo.html
Hello. Can I put Lucas Transmission fluid on a 2012 Toy Camry. I am having the issue you mention. I called the dealer but not covered because I have 165k miles. Is this a CVT transmission? Thank You.
As far as I know, the Hybrid has a CVT and other trims do not. It's about a $3k repair when done out of warranty so might be better to sell the car or trade it in with the issue noted. Good luck and hope it gets better!
As soon as the shutting started took it easy when the shutter started. Had trans fluid change and the problem was solved. Car has 94000 on it.
interesting..
How’s it doing by now?
My local Toyota service person acts like it's not a well know widespread problem; wants me to pay like $85/hr to diagnose issue before addressing (or really answering any warranty questions I have). Two questions here: Q1 - What happens if I do nothing, ever? Q2- Anyone tried Lucas Anti-Squawk, Anti-Shudder Trans & Diff Additive #10599?
If you do nothing the problem definitely gets worse!!

What does standard mode mean?
Do V6 models have this same issue? I’ve read a lot of comments and I haven’t read someone with a V6 having this problem. I have a 2012 XLE V6. Maybe a different transmission 🤷🏻♂️

interesting. I have a 2011 Rav4 thats doing the EXACT same thing. Dealer tells me I need a new transmission. Funny, the Camry I believe, has the same motor and I'm guessing the same Transmission? And I've read a number of Rav owners having the same issue but no recall. I like the Rav and Toyota but sometimes I really wonder if they are as good as we all think. No transmission shop in my area will even touch a RAV. And these cars just litter the "best used car" lists. Just a bunch of lies.
Interesting, hopefully you can get it resolved!
@@MasryMotors oh, its getting resolved. To the tune of $2,200. Look, I have no allegiance to any car company. Personally, I've had the best luck with Fords. I've had 3 Fords, multiple GM products... and EAGLE TALON (believe they were a Chrysler product?), a Honda.... I've had ONE. ONE major Transmission issue---- this Toyota RAV4. And I typically buy higher mileage cars so the Rav isn't going up against brand new vehicles in my comparison. I'm not trying to bang on Toyota(ok, maybe a little). But they ain't perfect. Far, far from it. I frequently see comments "I have 220,000 miles on my Toyota." Big deal. I see countless Fords, Chevy's and even lowly Chryslers with 200xxx miles in the car listings. TONS.
