I had John Kosie's heads, the 1st batch that came out 15 yrs ago and they floated 390 CFM I sent them out local for port work. They flowed 430 CFM. Huge difference. BUY AMERICAN USA 🇺🇸
Good video Eric. Some day's we just need to get the work done. As mentioned by others, 1.71 is a standard Cleveland 4V exhaust valve. Standard installed height, 1.850 by memory. This is probably the best video that I have seen when it comes to showing the importance of the valve job on flow
The 460 or 385 series engines use the same valves as the 335 series AKA 351 Cleveland. Those are 4V size valves but the iron 460 heads use smaller valves like the 2V heads. They also use the same distributor and rocker arms and valve springs.
The bbf has lots of options and the speedmaster cnc heads are ~2k for a set (not good value). tfs makes a stock style powerport head, eliminator performance makes a ton of heads for the bbf as well as probably one of the best wedge heads (RCV1), AFR makes great bbf heads, kaase makes the p51, sr71, and boss9 heads, edelbrock and scj as you've mentioned as well.
The cvr1 head won't fit on a stock block you need a 4.5 inch bore only one head from eliminator will fit the stock block. They are all big money Mbe has a trick flow head that flows big but over 10 grand per a head
@@stephenfazekas1568 who says you're limiting yourself to s factory block? ALL of eliminators heads except the RCV1 will fit with a production 429 or 460 block.
Hey Eric, i am really really thankful for your work. I'd nearly went for Promaxx heads after doing lots of datasheet researches. But its up to you i found out they do NOT come as expected. Now i choose some AFR ones and spend a few bucks more, just to be reliable.
@@WeingartnerRacing I am talking about your video, in which they had a good flow, but also not fitting valve springs (without OD shims, which are needed) and lots of scratches on the head gasket surface. Also it seems that they had a bad valve processing. Maybe i have misunderstood your video ... :) greetings
Never thought id see a bbf on this channel but i was happy to see it, even if it is junk. BBF is kinda the red-headed step child of the aftermarket anymore it seems. I can somewhat understand there not being more lower end offerings as the stockers can support 500-600 reletively easy. If going beyond that, really should be running some afr's or p51s at minimum.
Just fyi for the guys reading the comments. These are replacing some D3VE heads. Which from the limited flow info out there that i can find the D3VE flow terrible. Plus you still get the weight savings. These were purchased super cheap bare.
A set of AFR 290 BBF heads are flowing over 400 CFM at like 0.700 lift. Last time I checked they were priced at $3K a set. I’ve got Speedmaster heads on my 351-W and I had to put a lot of work into them. I did all the work myself. I’ve got a valve and seat grinder. I worked in a machine shop for 10 years building cylinder heads and engine block machining. I’ve been precision welding and grinding for the last 17 years. So I can build and machine almost anything on an engine. I don’t recommend anything Speedmaster. Too much rework and money to get the cylinder heads right. ProMax and Skip white are decent choices for a budget build but they don’t offer anything BBF.
Good video Eric. Nice pick up on the valve job.👍 If you re-ported the heads, what gain could you have gotten? Can you help the exhaust? Have a great day.
Slightly off topic, but what other Speedmaster heads have you flow tested? I just received a set of 210cc as cast LS cathedral port heads. Can't find ANY flow numbers on them. Supposedly they are a copy of the 243/799 GM heads. How much would you charge to flow 1 each random intake and exhaust port?
Yes a cheaper head, still not a bad casting, cnc port work done, chambers look ok..i think buy bare, buy your valves, get seats cut.. Port bowls as Eric did.. Dont buy complete, valves are trash, springs/retainers-Mmmmmmm no...
Tfs are back ordered, p51, new p51D, sr71 are all available and can be on your door step in 30 days. Sr71 is a true 1200 hp head one carb n/a, for 3200$ shipped. They are a screaming deal. Heads that are worth the time are available thankfully, The 315afr is ok, nothing special, a p51 will run right with it. Thankfully the 4wd world keeps the BBF relevant. The selection we have is amazing considering they weren’t installed in all those muscle cars like the junky BBM was
What I don’t get is why wouldn’t someone C N C factory castings. I think FoxLake did back in the day. I mean if someone came up with the program to cnc these hunks of shit, why not a factory casting like the C8/C9/D0VE heads…?
I had a set of those non CNC ported. They had the worst single angle and choked down valve job ever! I bet my machinist cut out .250 per side to fix the bowl.
Speedmaster is the worse Had some of their rods awhile back 15g different on the big end I called and said what's up these are soposto be weight matched within a gram they claim they said they are matched by total weight they don't weigh each end individually individually i hung up the phone in absolute amazement

kaase*
Huge price difference too. If you're wanting decent horsepower without breaking the bank, These heads will work fine.
He did the right move sending it to you Eric. It will probably work great for his needs being a street only motor.
Those valve sizes sound like a 4V 351 Cleveland size
Good video Eric. Some day's we just need to get the work done. As mentioned by others, 1.71 is a standard Cleveland 4V exhaust valve. Standard installed height, 1.850 by memory. This is probably the best video that I have seen when it comes to showing the importance of the valve job on flow
Looks like a horrible combustion chamber, with so much potential, if they didn’t sink the valves so far in! Thanks for the info! Another good one!
I cannot unsee the ruts milled into the chambers with the aluminum flakes around the spark plug opening, superb workmanship!
Glad to see some bbf stuff
Damn a factory CJ from 1970 would probably move more air
Close, 4V run around 275 CFM @ .600" whether they're open or closed chamber. A good valve job and bowl work gets you 330 CFM.
Edelbrock RPM are good for the money and have great potential. All over Ebay $1450 each. A460 Trick Flow easy to get in the $3500 range.
Trick flow and afr both make multiple levels of Bbf heads just an fyi
I forgot about afr

A lot of the name brand stuff is out of stock / back ordered.

We can't even get some of those trick flow heads right now. Had to have the old 325's freshened up.
Thank you !!!!
You're welcome!

That’s crazy, just looking at the after I thought they would have flowed so much more than that
Thanks
Speedmaster/Procomp is extremely consistent in their products. They are all consistently horrible quality.
Great video, I bought a set of speedmaster heads for a Pontiac, I they’ll perform better than the factory ones.

I had a set on a BBC cost me an engine...lost a valve. Hard lesson learned. Hopefully they're a reliable option for you
That's why you buy these bare and use good parts.
That's exactly what we did.
Big Block Ford is about on par with Olds, for head availability.
Why valve length does the intake valve need to be? I can’t find any info.
Good video Eric.
Nice pick up on the valve job.👍

No
What kind of power level would this support on a 460 and if I buy a set could I send them to you for a valve job 😂
Could you do a comparison between trickflow and promaxx heads for small block Chrysler?
Nope I don’t have the fixture to flow them.
Man Speed master is that bad that sucks. But very cool gain on just your valve I can't to see what mine is before and after

Be great for over 600 cubic inches, shorter duration and higher lift cam
