What about humidity or moisture in the wood? This is a general laser question but I guess it applies here to. Would this effect the setting s or process?
Yes, moisture can affect the wood and how it reacts but fairly negligible for surface engraving for the most part.
I would love see some photos engraved on wood.. like real photos..

Creative space needs improving. It crashed on me a few times after spending hours making complex designs. Very frustrating.

All in all I like what xtool do.
I've been testing the d1Pro for a few months and had 0 issues with the module, stepper motors and belts it's XCS that lacks.
Instead of incorporating AI first they should have advanced their basic editing features.
It's the little things that add up.
Are you using the new Beta version of the software? I haven't used my D1 in about a year, so I haven't really kept up with the features for that machine.
