Looking forward to the series! It sounds really interesting
The script of this video was pure poetry to urbanism lovers
I've been living in Gdańsk, Poland for whole my life. I can say that most of urban issues we have comes from the fact that city tries to grow. More and more green area is populated with districts, trees are cut and traffic is getting worse (on one hand there are more people on the roads, on the other public transportation is bad in those new districts)
I would say that my city is definitely one of the winers in Poland (huge real estate pricing increase, a lot of people want to live here). And it doesn't bring benefits to it's citizens. Maybe the local government gets more power on state politics or maybe they have more opportunities to get a bribe from house developer, but one would expect democratically chosen council not to expand city as much as possible
However, maybe it's a result of demographic dynamics. City becomes older and retirees don't contribute in taxes, while using public services. Maybe it's a method to aquire younger taxpayers to be able to support existing community. Hard to say, waiting for next episodes
Wonderful
Great video, thoughtful and insightful
Missing from this is Henry George's observation that with increase wealth in cities comes increased poverty, with landowners (more rightly the ability to restrict what happens on land) being the biggest drivers.
If you have to pay to have a place to stand, the particulars of whatever economic arrangement matter less than having a sufficient hedge to afford it. It is neo-feudalism all the way down.
To wit- per a Harvard study the most impactful spending on poverty was... public transportation, allowing the poor to take higher paying jobs in affluent areas while being able to live in more manageable circumstances.
Added to that now is the digital divide of having access to job opportunities.
Excellent.
Funny to see Koblenz at 1:20, one of the two large Cities (in Germany, a Großstadt has over 100,000 inhabitants) i´ve spent a lot time in.
The European cities are so beautiful ❤❤❤
For my family, city was a place of opportunity.
A place to find better education, healthcare and job.
I’m wondering how many cities will fall solely due to climate change. Will some coastal cities somehow be able to stay above the water?
I don't think it's quite THAT bad. Sea level likely won't rise more than 0.6 of a meter by 2100.
