    Just a tip from a long time camper. I always carry a jumper pack. Plug it in, keep it charged in the the campsite. A good one will give enough power to run your powered jacks, stabilizers, and slide. Also, you never know when your truck might need a jump to get you going.

    Thanks. Informative for the would-be RV buyer. It goes to show, things can go wrong (barely scratching the surface here) and you need to be ready for them.

    Great series - Loved following your adventures on this trip! Those new tires performed well given what was thrown at them. Not sure the Westlake tires would have held up the same. We picked up a quick trailer jack called TrailerAid that wasn’t too expensive. Glad you made it home safely 😀

    • @DriveNorth
      @DriveNorth  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks again Corey! I'll have to check out that TrailerAid. Good point with the Goodyears holding up, a weaker tire could have totally disintegated and started wrecking our underbelly. Normally I would stop right away and do a walk around after hitting debris, but we were so close to home I thought I could make it a mile or two. Guess not!

    Grote Dialectic grease - your best friend for all electrical connections. Goop it into the female receptacle so that when you push in the male it ooozes out and you'll never have another problem. I use it a lot on all A/C system sensors because that constant hot/cold cycle sucks humidity/moisture into those connectors and they're noted for their teeny diameter (.020") contacts rusting and breaking off from vibration. If replacing one of your led marker lights, goop up the plug on the back. Bulbs on older rigs, - smear the contacts and the bulb base and you'll probably never change another bulb. Socket contact corrosion raises resistance and is a bulb killer.

    • @adambradley7100
      @adambradley7100 3 роки тому +2

      @@DriveNorth the 2500 is much more planted. There is less sway in my opinion. The payload is the other big deciding factor. I didn’t like knowing that I was “maxing out” my payload on the 1500. BTW, the 2500 is a gasser. I don’t like it as much for a daily driver, but for towing it’s the right truck for me.

    With todays travel trailer it would be a great idea to have tire pressure monitors so you could catch a flat before the tire came apart. Damaged the wheel well on my older trailer years ago. I believe your investment into the better tires paid for itself in comparison to how things could have turned out with the factory tires. I put a set of Endurace tires on our TT last year and it feels as if the trailer "tracks" better and less sway. Side note, I once helped a couple get their slide in when their rig's battery had died. the furnace fan pulls a ton of power, if you only have a standard lead acid battery, you got about what can be expected running your furnace. we have 6 Lithium batteries and have no issue, but I would highly recommend swapping your Lead acid for even 1 Lithium, the lead can only be discharged 50% Lithium can be discharged 90-95% so you would have had plenty of power for your furnace all night, and still pull in your slide.

    WOW! You drove 570 miles in one day!?! Hubby & me drove a loop of 33 states from Vancouver Island BC, in our 4cyl suv, towing a 12ft trailer, maxed at 2700lbs(tow rating was 2800), averaged 17/mpg, and thought we were pushing it at 350mile travel days.lol. total newbies left with 8yr old tires(they looked good to us, but got them changed 1/2way thru) AND we had our sway bar on upside down for like 3000miles! 🤦‍♀️ but our only issue we had in 12,000 miles was the slave cylinder for clutch went, but we had the extra insurance like you and got towed to Nampa Idaho and lived in our trailer in the parkinglot for a few days, with a courtesy car too! It was our very first trip and we loved every bit of it. I will never forget that tow truck that hauled our suv on the truckbed and our poor little trailer towed behing us, he was doing 70-75 down the road and I think that little trailer was holding on for dear life🤣😜,good thing those 8yr old tires held out! Sandra WestleyUK the rules over here, are to change tyres every 5 years max, even if not towing the weight of the van standing weakens the walls of the tyres, they can bulge on the insides and we have had wires sticking out of the inside of the tyre we couldn’t see it with our eyes, but it made a clicking noise as the wire hit the road, we stop a few times before my husband felt around the back and he could feel them. The tyre was replaced by the manufacturer and was classed as faulty.

    We were travelling with my daughters family 3 years ago east of Huntsville Ontario and my son-in-law had 2 blowouts on his 5th wheeler about 125kms apart. We waited for a service truck to change the first one, but managed to get the trailer safely off of the road into a forest rd because we didn’t have a second spare. We took the blown tire with us after unhooking the 5th wheel trailer. We found a tire shop along the route, that was able to fix Nathan up with a used tire that would fit. We took the grandkids with us and proceeded to our next campsite, while Krista and Nathan went back and changed the tire. They we’re a bit gunshy by then so they towed the trailer to the tire shop, where they we’re able to plug the trailer in and the shop ordered 4 new trailer tires for them. It was nearly 9pm before they got to the campground and bunked in for the night. He was lucky on both , because they “ POPPED” and he was able to stop each time before any damage was done. It was nearly 6pm before he got the call that the tires were in, and him and I drove back to get the trailer. We still waited for the install to be completed, before we could get back to the campground. We were booked into that campground for 3days, so we had no problem there. It is very stressful at the time but we can look back now and chuckle at our misfortune/good fortune, but it’s in the memory banks as a good trip!

    You may want to invest in a Trailer Aid Plus (emphasis being on the Plus as it gives you more lift). Keep in the trailer as it weighs only a few pounds and use it the same way you tried to use your Anderson Levelers - but they actually work and makes changing a tire extremely quick.

      While this may be an overkill, I also keep a torque wrench with a 4” extension and a socket that fits my TT lug nuts in my tow vehicle. In case of a flat I can actually jack up the tire, change a flat tire for the spare in just a few minutes using the torque gun and the Trailer Aid plus - and when you are doing this on the side of a busy highway, the sooner you get going the better.

      The Trailer Aid Plus does help, but it doesn't lift the other axle up on all leaf spring trailers like you see in all the promo videos. The flat will come off, but you still need to jack a little on the axle with the flat to get the fully inflated tire on. Not many videos out there showing this issue, but I do have one on my channel and here is another I found. ua-cam.com/video/mzc9MlNNZi0/v-deo.html

    If you blow out thoroughly with air you really don’t need to put antifreeze in the lines. Just a little in the P-traps and your good to go.
    What happened to you is a prime example of why I bought a trailer TPMS (EEZ RV) that monitors continuously vs the 6 second cycle time of a lot of units.
