Many years ago I had an encyclopedia about trains and I remember a quote: "The first Big Boy No. 4000 entered service on 5th September 1941." Well today is exactly *80 years!*
I just luv the sound of the EMD diesel locomotive (UP4015) in Notch 0 (running at idle) at 60+ mph = UP4015 is being dragged around by Big Boy (UPRR Class 4000) UP4014 !!!
5:18 We were in Chester just up the road across the tracks from where you were filming this watching as well. Had to wait a bit because stupid people kept going on the tracks in front of the Big Boy. Glad to see someone else who loves watching him kick across the railroads of America!
1:18 If I’m correct, that is in between Bell City and Perkins Mo right? I was right up the road from you at those grain elevators And then 1:50 I was tempted to go right where you where because I new that would have been an amazing shot.
Big boy! Biggest baddest heavy metal machinery there is! Listen to The thundering whistle and tell me your heart doesn't pump a little! This train can do it-trust me! USA at its finest! Follow the big boy!
The incredible strength and beauty of this marvel of engineering and human creation, which I discovered in 1967, is astounding - a true symbol of America's might, admires everyone, wherever he is. Azer. M Baku, Azerbaijan
36:15 Imagine being close enough to the tracks to see, hear and photograph the Big Boy from your backyard. Now imagine being that close to the tracks every other minute of every other day. Yeesh.
When I was young and living in the country, my parents house was 1/4 mile from a single track. You get used to it. ALSO been up the St. Louis Arch 3 times in my life and have my souvenir ticket to prove it. Don't go up if you hate tight spaces. Their little egg shaped pods are bearly enough room for 3 people to sit and it jerks at the curves before you get to the top. The view is just breath taking from the top!!
Hey, that was my childhood back in Tx. I had 3 railroad lines running beside my house. The closest being Union Pacific, then Burlington North/Santa Fe running on the middle rails and Amtrak on the furthest rails. I saw 3985 in my backyard. I traveled back from Ohio to see 4014 near the old place. 844 was present in Oct 2012

Outstanding video! Thank You for sharing this! Like I said before, it doesn't matter where Big Boy is-America just can't get enough of him! A proud, proud symbol of determination, love and back-breaking true grit to see touring our nation. I saw him for the second time this year (first time in 2019). There are simply no words to describe how I felt-just tears of gratitude on my face. 😊💯❤️❤️🚂🚂❗
I am glad that the Union Pacific rr decided to restore a "big boy" class locomotive, I never get tired of seeing UP 4014 in action traveling throughout the nation on special excursion operations.
Absolutely an outstanding video of the best steam locomotive that's still active, alive, and strong. Thank you Union Pacific for keeping this history alive and well. Long Live Big Boy 4014. The (1) dislike must Hate him or herself.
LOL, the couple @2:55 so eager to get to the next place they think they will see it, like many in this vid, spent so little time enjoying the experience of it where they were at that moment. All they will remember of it is the pic or two they hurredly snapped before running off. Not the sight, sounds, smells of the train or the smiles of the other people around who actually DID enjoy the experience.
The bigboy 4014 horn is something else Also be nice to see some farmers history Painted on the *Big Grain Silos * like in Australia country towns Look it up be amazed what the artist painted around OZ silos
@10:18 a Herit-BRO!!! THAT WOULD CLASH! SO BAD!!! XD Not to mention it's number 4015! ROFL! Like dude. watch some Bob Ross and learn how colors work! ROFL!!! XD Great video though HOly Chit! I've been waiting my whole life for this! i remember as a kid seriously joking (because thats a thing) that if i ever won the Lottery i would donate what ever it takes to get a Big Boy rolling again.... and Here it is! :,)
@@FanRailer was needed in Louisiana due to water problems so the diesel was needed in order to get them where water could be received. They refer to the diesel as a " pusher".
It still seems weird to see a locomotive on a main line operating without ditch lights. I understand that under the law, the Big Boy is considered historical railroad equipment as it pre-dates 1949, but the historical significance means nothing if it's bearing down on you and it isn't as visible as it could be. You'd think that with the modern equipment required to operate it on a main line, ditch lights would be part of the package.
In Canada it is! As to your point there’s really no reason for it. Big boy isn’t moving at the high speeds most modern freight trains are. Not to mention the literal team of employees that help make this one of the safest operations in the country.
Nice to see hundreds of Americans out, enjoying great weather and sightings of Big Boy.

Belíssimo momento..!
What an amazing piece of precision machinery. Just about as old as I am, but in better shape.
Did southern pacific have the 4014 big boy or did they use a locomotive similar to the big boy?
Southern Pacific had their 4-8-8-2 cab forwards.

Was this on the Union Pacific’s Chester Subdivision
Great coverage!!
Anyone know if the crew eats and sleeps on the train while it's touring?
Why is there a diesel loco behind 4014?
PTC, dynamic braking, fuel conservation when necessary, and emergency situations.

How do you follow 4014 around the whole time?
The schedule and route are public info. All you need to do is plan well and drive like a bat out of hell.

too bad we won't see it in AZ
Not this year anyway. It went through AZ in 2019.
What a beautiful steam train
I wonder if Steve Lee got to drive the Big Boy like 844 and 3985?
Steve Lee was long gone from the UP ranks before the 4014 even made it back to Cheyenne from Pomona.

At 14:28 were you able to park at the "Farm" and walk to that location?

Also in response this tour did not travel at night. They would go a certain amount of miles then shut down in designated cities.
