    Love the honesty girl...not what the tourism office would like but real people live real lives. I have been researching the outer Islands for a few years now and by far you were the most informative of anything seen or read. My dream is Long Island, off grid (solar) and growing my own food. I have no illusions as to how hard this would be but some things are worth everything! Blessings from Canada!!!

      Don’t believe the hype. If you’re white be wary. The capital is dangerous. Not as safe as when I was a kid there. Prices were high even in the 90s. Bad jobs that don’t pay well. If I was rich. I would move back. Probably visit Ancestors Origins of Red Bay. Bahamians are different from everyone. Bad influence from Abroad. 🤦🏾‍♂️

    Hi Rogan, Excellent video. I look forward to more. I love Bahamas. I spent two decades running charters from Florida to Bahamas and never got tired of it or the people. Unfortunately, there is a lot of government corruption, mostly in Nassau, largely a result of the PLP and Pindling's legacy. OMG, he was a corrupt, greedy sob. I have found most Bahamians to be honest, upright, kind, generous people. Americans could learn a lot about courtesy and kindness from my friends in the family islands.
    I have a typical story for you. Twelve years ago I was in Bimini as captain on a Hatteras motor yacht. Late one afternoon I took a bike ride up to Baileytown. I saw a guy cleaning lobster under a tree and struck up a conversation with him. Turns out he was the cousin of Ossie Brown, who I knew from years earlier at the Compleat Angler.
    I asked him how much for lobster and he offered to sell me a dozen. I said I left my wallet on the boat and he said "No problem. Take the tails and come back later when you can." Now I did not know this guy and he did not know me or where I was staying but he gave me a dozen tails and I hopped on my bike and rode away. As I did so I was thinking about how friendly and trusting he was. I knew this was someone I wanted to do business with. I got back to the boat, got my wallet, and rode back to pay him immediately. I think he was a little surprised to see me return. This was the beginning of a great friendship that endures today and is very typical of my experience in Bahamas.

    I know this is an old video however, I wanted to voice my opinion. I love the content, being a native this was completely accurate. It's a beautiful country but my frustration comes from a lazy mindset from hard working Bahamians. Here's what I mean by that. We don't grow our own food, we don't manufacture our own goods or teach others how to do so, we don't have incentives for graduates to stay and reinvest in our people. Island time should not be an excuse for common courtesy and on time customer service, especially when it comes to government entities. As far as hurricanes, it's been a few years since hurricane Dorian hit the Great Abaco, then instead of being proactive and learning from the devastation, the government remains reactive. I think every major island (7)should have a strong hurricane relief structure in case no one can evacuate. We often complain about the topics you talked about about however, nobody wants to change the mindset just because that's the way it has always been done. I don't think we have even scratched the surface of our full potential simply because of the lazy mindset. Simply paying for goods and services from other countries won't cut it, simply depending on tourism won't cut it. Buy a fish you eat for a few days. Teach a man how to fish you will eat for a lifetime. If the US suffers a national or economic collapse it would also be catastrophic for our economy. Therefore, we must become independent from imported goods. You have been informed.

    I've been going to the Bahamas for many, many years and have been to Nassau, Exuma and Cat Island and as far as swimming beaches, paddle boarding you can't beat Cat Island. Exuma beaches were pretty but the currant was a bit stronger and difficult getting in and out of where as Cat island was pure paradise......they seem to have more "coves" that make the water calmer.

    The best places to eat in Nassau are the food shacks at Potter's Cay. Most visitors never get there. This is where the locals go to party on Friday night. Try the tropical conch salad. It is my favorite. Also, check out things up on the Hill, in the vicinity of the rum distillery and the art center. There is also a history museum in the area and some historic hotels and B and Bs.

    • @ThisBahamianGyal
      @ThisBahamianGyal  3 роки тому

      I love the tropical salad, but the traditional remains my favourite. LOL. I actually don't like eating at Potter's Cay Dock. I find that place to be atrocious as far as cleanliness is concerned. I would never direct anyone there. I have heard family members say they love the food, but I am too much of a clean freak to eat there. But, to each his own. I do agree with the area near the rum distillery. You are on point! That was a lot of great information. I’m considering moving to the Bahamas and I’m wondering, is there a “local price” vs “foreigner price” for property there? I’ve heard that in many places the price is automatically jacked up if you’re a foreigner buying property. How do I get around this if this is the case?

    • @ThisBahamianGyal
      @ThisBahamianGyal  3 роки тому +16

      Hi Steven. I have never heard of legitimate realtors jacking up the price. I'm not saying that doesn't happen, but legitimate, licensed, respectable real estate agents value their reputation too much to do that. My advice is to go through a reputable agent. Many agencies have properties listed on their websites. That way, you will see the actual cost. They can't lie or change the price other than to lower it...and that would be to your benefit. Thanks for watching!

    I am an American who loves traveling to the Bahamas but just be warned things are quite expensive there especially on the smaller tourist resort Islands be ready to pay up to $90 for just 3 T shirts, you have to keep in mind nearly everything has to be imported and this creates high taxes and prices. If you go out to eat expect to pay anywhere from $12 to $ 20 for a cheesburger (a huge one and that is not including french fries and drinks which can bring it to a total of $30 to $45 dollars just for lunch. Service: Oh and dont be in a hurry to get a meal it can take some time sometimes up to an hour or 2 Island time is very real here. Weather is very hot and humid but with a cool breeze. sudden rain storms are common there as in Florida. Driving. Bahamians drive on the left NOT the RIGHT as they do on the US mainland and accidents are not uncommon among tourists who are not familiar . Taxis and tour buses tend to drive fast on the narrow roads . If your a tourists dont be surprised if people ( total strangers to you) tend to nod and wave and say hello this is quite common here unlike on the US mainland. Cash is more common than ATMs here so always be ready to have cash on you at all times US dollars are accepted. Also due to island time Bahamians tend to be a very relaxed and laid back culture ( and I thought Floridians were laid back!) so dont expect things to run on time all of the time!

      If only that were true for Trinidad and Tobago. I'd be swimming in TShirts, lol.

      @@alltheworldsastage4785 I was also on an island resort far from the capital Nassau and I think they jack up the prices a bit to get money out of the tourists which i can understand that they need the money on the smaller islands and everything there was imported on the cruise ships. When i was in Nassau ;T shirts were a bit cheaper but still somewhat high with the added tax .

    This was so good to hear. My family is from Nassau. I grew up in the states and visited Nassau in my youth. Most of my family has moved to the states and are very jaded about The Bahamas. How possible is it for an American to move? It seems almost impossible.

      Hi Tatiana. My niece's name is Tatyanna, so I just love that name. LOL. Thanks for watching my video. Why are they jaded? That's unfortunate. There are different categories under which an American or any nationality, for that matter, can relocate to The Bahamas. You can invest in the country - however, you'd have to invest several hundreds of thousands of dollars; you can marry a Bahamian citizen or get a job that will sponsor a work permit for you. It's not impossible. No harder than relocating to the US.

      @@ThisBahamianGyal thanks so much! I always hear them talk about the lack of opportunity. Big part of the reason I haven't moved. It's such a beautiful country though.

      It really depends on the industry you are in. If you fall outside the scope of tourism, medicine, banking/financial services, the legal profession or working for the government, it can be tough to find opportunities. Also, a lot is based on what your political affiliation is or who you know.

      Hi Dessi. Thanks so much. Yes, there are clubs in Nassau and Paradise Island. Yiu can get great nightlife at Baha Mar in Cable Beach. The grown and sexy folks go there, a lot of millennials and people who like to stunt for Instagram. Some restaurants have also started featuring live music as well.

    What are your thoughts on Freeport

    • @ThisBahamianGyal
      @ThisBahamianGyal  2 роки тому

      Thanks for watching. Freeport is great for raising children and families. Single people might prefer Nassau. Freeport is a more modern Family Island. It's slower paced but a very industrial town with chemical plants and oil refineries.
