I say, buy a piece of land, it doesn't have to be acreage. A fair size lot is enough to grow your own and go off grid on your choice of island.

If you are only looking in kingston then ultimately, it will be more expensive especially if you are looking in the more affluent areas. If you widen out a bit, you will find more affordable accommodation.

Retiring overseas can let you beat a lot of the US liabilities: rent, home prices, food, autos, taxes, insurance and HOA fee costs all out of control with little return, virtually no healthcare for middle class, salaries still stuck in the 1980's, and no big improvement in sight. Many of these islands have visa-by-retirement plans to help ease the immigration and residence process. Since you either no longer work or can do remote jobs, or combination, you are free to choose lifestyle over proximity to work/job. Go home twice a year to see the kids ...

Encourageing foreigners to move to your country makes life much more expensive for the natives. Cost of living goes up, rentals and buying homes become more unatainable, restaurants and supermarkets become more expensive because they start to only cater to the foreign pockets, no no no not good.😑😑
