@@BryndenBloodraven why would that matter he wouldn’t have to do anything he he didn’t want to. If he was an opportunist like you claim that’s the biggest opportunity of all. He could fill the council with people he could delegate administrative tasks to. He could surround himself with people he trusts to run the capital just like he would at home. And use the opportunity to gain power, fame, wealth, control, marriage alliances, dragon eggs, whatever he wanted. And he did none of that. He got rid of the betrayers and oath breakers, got a wife, gave aegon a trustworthy council, and went home.

I believe he didn't have the courage to assume this position. I don't see him as an opportunist, I see him as a coward disguised as a hero. If we focus on the superficial elements, we are pushed to see him as a great, charismatic and honorable warrior, when all the facts show a coward incapable of doing anything concrete

    This reminds of GOT
Cregan punished those who poisoned Aegon the 2nd, even tho he was a false king and cruel one. Killing a ruler is still treason no matter how u look at it. He had kings blood and was a son of the previous king. Cregan named Rhaenyras son king after wrds but still had the dignity and honor of stark to still punish those who poisoned Aegon the second, cuz who knows, they wuld have done the same thing or used Aegon the third like puppet.
in GOT, Ned Starks depised the fact Jaime killed the Mad King, even tho the Mad king was horrible and cruel. Jaime knew how horribly the king treated his queen consort and how unrully his rulling was. Ned Starks mirrors Cregan a lot here, everyone knew The Mad king was cruel, and yet everyone still looked at Jaime in a negative light and called him Kingslayer. Ned Stark, especially.

I honestly can’t understand the dislike of him. He followed through on his word even though he knew the targs couldn’t hold up there end anymore. He took the capitol. He executed and punished those who wouldn’t stop. He also punished the people who betrayed aegon the elder because they weren’t trust worthy. He threatened to march on greens that weren’t cooperating, got a wife , found homes for his Northman, than fucked off back home. He basically got revenge for the queen he had an oath to, stabilized the capital, and left. What’s not to like??

And in the end, the guy didn't do anything. He waited, spoke, threatened in vain. Many continue to see him as a great, charismatic and honorable warrior just because he bears the Stark name, when all the facts show the exact opposite. The guy patiently waited until all danger was removed to intervene in an already over war, show himself, punish the assassins of the king he was supposed to fight (but while carefully avoiding punishing the most powerful among them, as in chance), threaten to continue the war against enemies who would have crushed him anyway, while knowing very well that this would not happen, abandon power to one of his supposed former enemies. Nothing about nothing: hats off to the artist!

@@alessiodandolo1460 The man's job was to clear the table with those who would have been a risk to Aegon III. Yes, there is a certain bravery with his incitement against the Lannisters. But his stand against the Hightowers and Velaryon is justified. The king is a child, leaving sparks of influence in the houses closest to the king's predecessors would only cause another possible war. Corlys has two granddaughters with royal blood from Daemon Targaryen, the Hightowers a queen still living in King's Landing.
So yes, wanting to take away their influence to protect Aegon III is indeed a severe, sober, but politically justifiable decision.
Not to mention the death of Larys, who we can say that, like the Varys of his time, he knew the danger that his position in court would represent. Even the execution of Aegon II's guard is justified... Cregan's executions were what initially kept Aegon III in power.
The only thing I judge him for is leaving immediately and not helping to reap the fruit of his labor. Many problems could have been solved if he had remained in King's Landing for a couple of years and avoided the formation of the regent council.

@@JMTgpro But I ask you again, what stand against the Velaryons and the Hightowers ? Cregan Stark threatened them, but he did nothing. And he did nothing because he knew the Hightowers would have crushed him in an open war, and because he was afraid of Alyn Velaryon. His only goal was to show up at the end of the war to make everyone forget that he had played no role in it, and to get rid of his veterans so he could survive the winter. He never had the slightest intention of risking his precious life for Rhaenyra or the Blacks. A false hero.

@@ecm95 Yes, the cute story that Cregan Stark gave in to the Targaryen girls and Alysanne Blackwood. It's a nice official version, although a little silly. Just because Martin didn't write to you explicitly that Cregan Stark, like everyone else, acted for political reasons, doesn't mean that's not the case. Moreover, the author himself mentions the threat of Alyn Velaryon and cites it as one of the reasons why Cregan Stark gave up attacking Corlys. What's interesting about Martin's writing is precisely this: you have to read between the lines.

Cregan was a good politician. He could have probably marched earlier, those were in part excuses to see how it will go. They all knew dragons will be involved sooner rather than later. He waited. I don’t necesarily think he hoped to take Lannisport and Old Town, maybe as it was, he thought threats alone could do the job and image of a hard fearless warrior and reputation of Winter Wolves. He frees Corlys to secure a powerful ally in the South and does not overstay his welcome and fucks off. In essence he did rather little war wise and even rather little regent stuff, but even now people hear the “Hour of the wolf” stuff and are impressed, just shows he was a master politician

    • @lkrnpk
      @lkrnpk 6 місяців тому +2

I think unlike Ned he knew his limitations, he knew that if he stayed Southerners would be able to run circles around him with their intrigues. He was good at simple plans and projecting the image of a great warrior whom he I guess was. Even his allies had some fear of him, but I think he knew that if he stayed longer, some people might start to see that he was also not that particularly clever and maybe not quite the force to fear, so he did the basic stuff to make people sort of admire and fear him, secured Velaryon support and went home… and lived a very long and good life, not all Starks had them…

Cregan stark had to fight with his uncle to get his right. We don't see the iron throne worry or care about the rightful lord. Cregan could just ignore the call of both side. May be the show portrait Rhaenyra Targaryen as a caring queen but if you look at the whole scenario, its only cregan that kept his land and people well-prepared for the winter and he even find the avenue for the grey bread. I think he is the lord that maintain and well-manage his land and even able to manage the land beyond his border. At the end of the days, no lord could say they stop war bcoz they got bored. They had to admit they bend down the knee and war stop. And lets not forget the winter wolfs, they play a big role in the war unless for the traitor dragon they would have won the war before cregan had to march to the iron throne.

What s the auhor talking about? A ton of violence with thousands dead and many dead dragons had already been 'unleashed', and if Ageon II wasn't poisoned, he certainly would have continued trying to 'war'(with what resources is uncertain).
People, actualy follow the story, Cregan 'threatened' further violence, which is precisely what made people stand down. It was appropriately necessary and not at all did it raise a question of 'thug'. It simply was a raised hand to be 'b--- slapped' if things did not calm down. To make it more definitive, he accepted vows to take the black, and left 'immediately' after the 'Kings Justice' had been served.
Now, Unwin Peake? That dude was a THUG, big time. Let's talk about that.
