- On this episode I convert the 05+ superduty front axle for the ultimate crew cab to 8x6.5 in order to un new 17x8 steel wheels and give the truck an old school look. I hope you enjoy!

It was interesting seeing the front end assembly. You do good work.
Thank you
Great Video! Definitely better with steels
Totally agree!
Perfect timing just got a set of 2008 super duty axles super 60 and Sterling 10.5 going on my 97 ram 2500 I think I’m going to keep the dana 80 in the rear so I needed to change the bolt pattern to 8 x 6.5 for the front now i know it can be done :)
Right on!!
Those wheels are the right choice.
Thanks!
Great video on this stuff, of corse worth making the Steelies work! Tons of time saving and frustration saving tips!! Good work Matt!!
Love it, Matt!
Thanks for the milling footage, and ITS TOTALLY WORTH the work for the steelies!
If you havent drilled the hubs yet or if you have for future reference, motobilt and a few other companies sell a laser cut drill template to make it super easy to redrill the hubs
That wouldn’t work for the rears. Due to the way the hubs are cast you can’t split the pattern. They work great for redrilling the front unit bearings though!
@MattKubik1791 they must be using different hubs on certain year axles because we have redrilled a ton of 99-10 sterling 10.5 wheel hubs in our cnc mill. We have done well over 100 sets in the last 4 years. We have seen a few sets of 10.25 rears that the backside of the wms is not as thick in between the studs but refilling hasn't been an issue on those either
@@Rocky_Point_Motorsports sweet! Good to know. Yeah I didn’t spit the pattern due to them not having the thickened pad in between. I figured since I have the ability I might as well do it where it’s thicker.
Great work. Enjoy the videos when you film your work.
Awesome job, lots and lots of parts to put together, all worth it
This was a great video and really informative. Thanks Matt, keep up the hard work. This project is coming out awesome.
Much appreciated!
Great work as usual
Appreciate that
Why didn't you use a 90s ford frame
The superduty frame already is made for the power plant I chose (6.7 powerstroke) and had all the accommodations for the engine and transmission already built into the frame. Plus it has a far superior suspension system that will ride and handle far better than the 90s frame and suspension.
Have you looked into the Econoline van hubs and rotors? They stayed 8x6.5 lug pattern.
The vans use a dana 60 semi float or a 70 full float rear axle so none of the parts transfer over. I thought about getting a 70 out of a van but they are not easy to come by and for the cost I could make it all work with the superduty sterling so that’s the route I went.
I prefer steel wheels and love the 16x7 accuride ford wheels. I belive they came on areonose fords.
Awesome video! Love the steel wheels, worth the extra work! Just a thought, could you take the gear set out of the 2008 axle and put in the 2015 axle? It probably has a selectable locking differential which is a nice feature
I thought of that but they also change the pinion bearings and pinion shaft size so they were not transferable sadly.
Sticking to the old school look is great but one disadvantage I see is that when you’re out road tripping and off-roading the truck, none of those parts are going to be readily available at a parts store if something breaks. Say a caliper sticks or a rock gets wedged and a rotor gets burnt up. Going to have to have a tool box with at least one spare of everything
Calipers are all standard off the shelf parts. I’ve never ruined a rotor on a vehicle bad enough I could drive as well 🤷🏻♂️ I’m thinking I’m ok with that risk. But something to think about for sure.
I've busted a hub bearing in the middle of the Sonoran desert and drove 50km to the nearest little town and my break disks were fine so it's not that big of a deal.
I did this hub conversion 10+ years/ 200,000+ miles ago on my super duty to get away from the ford unibearings. It’s some of the best money I’ve spent on my truck
I really like how it's turning out Matt! 😁👍 I'm a steelie fan, usually I run steel wheels on everything. Not a fan of the light weight rating of aftermarket wheels. I've seen plenty of aluminum wheels with cracks. Happy wrenching and have a great Thanksgiving my friend 🔧🔩
I think the offset of the new steel wheels looks great.
You don't need those dust shields just rock catchers
Will this kit work on 2003?
No, this specific kit will not but they do make one for the 99-04 axle
@@MattKubik1791I did this with the kit that fits my 2003. Ford should have never went with unibearings
@@MattKubik1791I did lose my vacuum locking hubs.
Its a lot of work but its gonna look good
