  • On this video I pull the Ultimate Highboy back in the shop after being broke down for 2 years after a trip to Colorado. What started and a quick in and out repair snowballed into a major project. Par for the course I suppose! I hope you enjoy.

I liked how you threw in some footage of you wheeling the truck as well 🙂👍 Nice work with the teardown Matt 🔧

I had a 4bt in mine without sound deadening, then swapped it out for a 6bt with firewall sound deadening. Sound deadening is a must have creature comfort learned the hard way. Wrapped exhaust and used sections of welding blanket near cab exhaust routing, then hosed that all down with exhaust paint. Yes you can still hear everything but the decibels don’t cut right into the skull at highway speeds and I don’t miss wearing headphones.

Walker Quiet Flows helped me to hear myself think in the Mustang. They were a much better choice than the Borlas they replaced. There is a 3.5" inlet and outlet option, but it gets pricey. I got the 2.5" offset inlet and center outlet through Rockauto for $50-60 a muffler last year. If I had a muffler from a diesel truck laying around, then I would start there too.
For the starter, with only 2 bolts, you may have this same trouble again of bolts getting loose. A few random thought for the third bolt…. 1. Drill through the plate and transmission. Run the bolt through both, buildup a flat spot on the transmission by welding or grinding for a bolt head. 2. Drill through the plate and transmission then enlarge the hole in the transmission to allow for a Torqs head or allen head bolt to set against the adapter plate. Both would still leave the starter serviceable. 3. Last thought is to tap the plate for a stud then drill the threads out of the third hole on the starter for a slip fit. You could cut away some of the starter housing to allow for the stud to be seen, then add a nut and washer. Hopefully there is enough detail to visualize the thoughts in my head. Good luck.

Man time flys! I would maybe try a magnaflow muffler, deep sound not too loud.

I have skyjacker 4" lift "soft" springs on the front and rear on my highboy. The truck looks great and I love it but for the ride....it's horrible

Glad I'm not the only one. I am considering getting some custom springs made that will bolt right up to a highboy that are superior ride quality, just depends on the final price point would be.

Was this originally a fe352 4spd manual shift transmission or a column shift 3spd manual transmission truck Matt sir

What is 2 k paint I have found and started to get the 390 engine stripped down and I am going to get the block and head and intake cleaned in a ultra clean vat and after I get it built I would like to paint it so that it stays painted

2k paint is a paint with a catalyzed hardener.

Just came across your channel. Nice old truck! I’m not really a ford guy but I’ve owned a few over the years ( 69 Bronco and a 70 Boss 302). I wish I still had them. How are you liking the Pro Flo 4 efi? I’m trying to to decide if I want to go with it or the Holley Sniper 2. I’m leaning more to the Pro Flo 4 because it’s multi port and the ecu isn’t inside the throttle body.
I was thinking on your starter issue and the 3rd bolt that you don’t have access to. Maybe putting a dowel pin there may help a little with strength in it up a little. Have you checked with Alcan Springs? They make nice custom leafs for a lot of trucks.

I am on the fence about it. Given the cost of the unit now I am not sure I would buy it. I got it before the price went way up on them. I am not sure I see enough benefit for the cost. Fuel mileage isn't that great. (but running a 428) I feel like a simple carb would be better for everything I do other than taking it to the mountains at high elevation and being able to adjust air fuel on the fly.

@@MattKubik1791 I know how you feel about the cost. I’ve got a Gen VI 454 that I’m rebuilding to put in my 1985 Chevy K10 on 1 ton axels. I’m also putting in a 5 speed manual transmission with it. I’m back and forth about putting efi on it. I like the simplicity and ease of repair of a carburetor.
My plan for the truck is to travel around out west in a couple years when I retire. I live in the south east and my concern like you stated is dramatic elevation and temperature changes in the mountains. I’m not sure how well a carburetor will do in that situation without having to do a lot of adjusting but I also worry about the reliability of the aftermarket efi systems. Pros and cons of both I guess.
I will be following you on your adventures with your cool old truck. Nothing like the old classics back when trucks were trucks and built tough and didn’t have all the crazy electronic gadgets that they have now.

And I thought my old tundra was bad!! The intake manifold has to come off the get to the starter 😬. I think I would lop an ear off that bell housing or clearance it to have access to the bolt from the back side. Is that a speed gems adapter?

    • @MattKubik1791
      @MattKubik1791  Місяць тому +1

Yes, but the broken bolt was my doing not speed Gems.

If the exhaust sounds too loud, you may be too old.
