Your admiration for Phil is great. In the 80s,the British press, for some reason, totally trashed him. I never understood why. Phil is everything... total musician. Talented beyond normal.
sadly it was because of when he broke up with his second wife in 1993 - the UK press really laid into him. Plus the fact alot of hits were ballads - it really seemed to piss them off! Sad that they didn't see what we see. But I'm happy seeing people discovering the music properly and Phil getting the recognition he deserves
@@rk41gator oh, yeah.. Got that video when it came out. 😎 But for Wembley Stadium... It was a record only broken by MJ. MJ did 5 sold out in a row I believe.
As a drummer, you should watch the drum duet Phil does with Chester at the same concert, in fact watch to the end of the concert. You won't be disappointed.
The last time I heard this Genesis tune was about 41 years ago. At the time, I thought that the theme of the song was not only different, but strikingly poignant. Well done Phil Collins and crew!
Lol, 😂 first time I saw Genesis it was upstate New York in Rockland county community college gymnasium. It was general admission ( no assigned seat ) tickets were $6.50. Show was fantastic, theatrics and light show was second to none
I agree with this. There were 5 dates at Wembley that week and I got tickets for two of them. It was only later when watching the official DVD that I appreciated just how good HBTS part 2 was.
Phil brought a more "joe lunchbox" approach as the frontman or an "every man" approach, whereas Peter was more "the mysterious stranger" regaling the crowd with tales of his travels. Both are legends. And both came out of a legendary band.
Dude that's the exact words I wanted to use. But couldn't get it out in the moment. Every man. Exactly. And Peter was very mysterious. I like it. They both are amazing.

Absolutely Genesis' commercial peak, this was the end of a 10 month world tour that ended being one of the top 10 grossing tours of the 80's. They were an incredibly tight live unit, and Chester Thompson (who also drummed for Frank Zappa and Santana throughout his career) and Daryl Stuermer (who would alternate bass or guitar depending on what Mike preferred to play song by song) were essential components of the live Genesis sound. I was still too young to be going to massive concerts like this at the time, but had the VHS release and played it a ton as a kid. Awesome reaction, and you made some very good points afterwards, thanks.
Genesis at their peak of popularity. In 1987, the thing cool to do was attend a Genesis concert, they've done Wembley stadium sold out 4 nights at the really end of the Invisible tour. This is one song where I like the album version more than live, mainly because Phil's voice reaches the higher registers - in the concert, he needed his voice to last for the rest of the concert. Watch the music video to hear the original.
I was losing interest in new Genesis material by 1984 but they were always FANTASTIC in concert. Chester Thompson and Daryl Stuermer are virtuosos and were mainstays of live Genesis for most of their post-Steve period. Chester was on some of the best Zappa albums and tours, and Daryl's work with former Zappa jazz violinist Jean-Luc Ponty stands on its own. Daryl played some fantastic solos when playing Steve's parts. His solo at the end of "Say It's Alright, Joe" during the 1978 tour is legendary. What a fantastically talented and fascinating band. I love most of the Phil era and am thankful that Peter left to fulfill his visions, both musically and in the world of global social justice, Great reaction, but I'm still hoping for the 1993 live version of "In Your Eyes" by Peter, which might change your life. :)

@@L33Reacts Filmed the week of July 4th, 1987. About 2 years prior, the same stadium hosted Live Aid 1985 on July 13th that year. What you're looking at is the OLD Wembley stadium. A new one was rebuilt over top the old site in 2007.
I haven't heard this song in a long time and as I'm listening, it reminds me of NIN a lot, of Closer specifically. Anyway, love the song Mama, it's always been one of my favorites of Genesis-so unique, so interesting, so cool. Yes, Genesis was that big-they had been around a long time before this concert-one of the best bands of all time
Bro! Has anyone ever told you that you look exactly like NERDORK? If you don't know who I'm talking about, look him up, and you'll see for yourself!! The resemblance is uncanny!!😲
First of all... When Genesis(before they did get their name Genesis) started as a group in about 1966, they´re goal was to make popsongs for other artists, before that they emerged from two school bands, The Anon and The Garden Wall. However the songs they made were taken to the music-guru and former artist from same school, Jonathan King (who had a own pop hit in 1965) and saw some talent in these guys, and ultimately gave them the name Genesis, and produced their first album "From Genesis To Revelation". The album did not so well as recordstores put them in the religious section....for obvious reasons... So, they aimed to do pop-songs and failed.... They eventually did something on their own, mainly inspired by other english bands as King Crimson and Van Der Graaf Generator but also with other bands. As time goes by, they found their "Genesis sound" as became succesful. However, times changes and to stay alive, you need to change, whatever fans thought...And they gained more fans, lost some but got more successful. To even belive that one could change minds of original members such as Mike and (more) Tony, to do music they did NOT want to do... Ridiciolous.... They were the leaders of the band, more Tony than Mike but rest asure, it was NOT Phil "ruining" the band.... I´m one of the lucky ones who loves E V E R Y T H I NG they did! My first listen was in 1981, probably Duke before Abacab but could be the other way around. Loved it, and then ATOTT and the Lamb and so on. Everytime I heard something new it was a bliss, a new revelation! And, I did not wear the same clothes in the ´70s as I did in the ´80s and even music changed! Still love it though! (or for some clothes I do regret...) :D
Honestly I have enjoyed every single genesis song except abacab. But apparently its the next song. I'm gonna give it another shot. Just because. Lol I love this band so much. Phil definitely didn't ruin anything. Just did something different. Nothing wrong with that
@@L33Reacts yeah, the answer was to as much to people that think Phil did "ruin Genesis" and there are many who thinks just that. About Abacab, it´s a effing banger but you choose which one version, just remember that the Three Sides Live is the nearest to relaleas of original... Anyway, ypu can listen to both on your own time. It rocks H A R D on Three Sides Live! ;)
Genesis back catalogue is epic. They have such an amazing body of work it's just amazing. both with Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins as lead singer. You gotta do more man Genesis were of course the pioneers of 70s Prog Rock. May I suggest the final suite on Wind And Wuthering entitled Unquiet Slumbers For The Sleepers/In That Quiet Earth/Afterglow which is just off the charts. All their music is superb. This song Mama is actually about a prostitute in Cuba back in the 1950s it's definitely not about their Mother!
Not even Gabriel did the same thing as in the ´70s.... Most people did not wear same clothes in the ´80s as in the ´70s... Times change, as do music.. If Genesis did not develope, they would cease to exist as they were... Yu need to make changes! Yes?
Abacab is the following song after Mama, however, IMHO the best version is from the album Three Sides Live and then the video version from that album.. But,, that´s My 2 cents on the matter!
Domino has incredible fills by chester Thompson in this gig. The drums for the first half of this song was on tape. Chester joins halfway through. But seriously watch the drum duet from this gig
If you like Wembley people and a guy who catch them all I suggest 1985 Live Aid with Queen. Here we have the Genesis version of In the air tonight (You remembered that at 11:30 and it's not a case). If you like Genesis music listen to 1970-1980 all albums, whole albums, you'll like them! 😍😍😍
Fairly new sub working my way thru your channel. Loving it, especially the Genesis reactions... Definitely need to check out Domimo from this same concert. Its just, i dont know... perfect The whole concert is perfect honestly
Nobody in music worked harder than Phil, he was phenomenal at his peak, live and studio, he’s worthy of his superstar status. Earlier days he played a lot of drums live, then getting back on vocals, outstanding drummer as well, Chester was a good stand in as well but I prefer Phil as a drummer.
I prefer Phil as well but Chester can DRUM bro. I've seen him in zappa and goddamn . He is a unit. I love Phil's work ethic man look how big he got them... so awesome.
@@L33Reacts Yeah, Chester was outstanding, seen a lot of him in Zappa and Genesis, Bruford played for one tour but a prefer Phil over him as well, Phil just has a unique style, all that old Brand X stuff actually scares me with how good Phil was.. Just listened to a track called “Ish” on the Brand X Livestock album, Phil is incredible on it, good album. Btw, really enjoying this Genesis journey Lee, you’re doing a great job lad
I think you'd dig a lot of the '80s Genesis. That's where I started with them and worked backward. A lot of folks point to Phil as pulling Genesis into more pop territory, but I really think that was a full-on band thing. A lot of those hits - Follow You, Follow Me, Invisible Touch, Turn It on Again, Land of Confusion, I Can't Dance, Throwing It All Away - are were born out of all Rutherford's guitar. Rutherford wrote lyrics on Follow You, Illegal Alien, Land of Confusion too. Banks seems like a guy who doesn't do anything he doesn't want to do either. But all those albums had prog-like pieces as well. Plus that nice and loud gated drum sound on most of them. Duke's Travels/Duke's End, Dodo/Lurker, Tonight, Tonight, Tonight, Home by the Sea/Second Home by the Sea are just a couple examples.
I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for not screwing up with the aux cord this was great. I started with abacab and worked my way back as well. And they did land of confusion??? I love that song! Well. The disturbed cover at least. Lo
If you think that's a large crowd it's small compared with the When in Rome concert. This was a free concert performed in front of 500,000 people. I recommend "I know what I like in your wardrobe " where Phil shows his total control of a vast crowd.
By far their best album after Peter Gabriel left. For me, this is the only one I listen to without Gabriel. Totally agree, the build is excellent and masterful in this song.
That's insane. I had no idea they were that popular back then. Went from full prog to full rock. Good for them. I'm glad they finally earned what they deserved back in the 70s lol
Yeah, Phil's voice and style is more melodic and musical than the theatrical rock era of Pete and his jaggerish stage presence. Phil was always working on side projects in the late 70's. In the 80's he slowed down and got into producing other artists. But, he was always making product. "The hardest working man in the british music biz".
I would state that Phil was THE hardest working musician ever! in the ´80s! In the world! As a musician, music writer, producer and actor... He was E VE R Y W H E R E!
@@nightHawk66 i noticed a movie streaming on one of the top platforms, of his. made in the 80's that I didn't know existed! And I ain't referring to "Buster"! Another, crime caper, iirc.
In 1992, I came SO CLOSE to seeing "The Way We Walk Live" in Detroit. The guy I had just started dating had bought tickets with his little sister before we met. He tried to buy hers off her so I could go, but alas, she was having none of it. That was really, I think, the last tour where they were in peak form. Phil's voice cracked a couple times, but by the time they toured again, it had gotten to the point where they had to drop the songs to a lower key because Phil couldn't hit the high notes any more, as as much as I love them, it just never sounds right to me when that happens. I keep wanting to sing it in the key I know it's supposed to be in. So, yeah. I missed my shot. But I've seen the video and it was an excellent show.
Wembley Stadium back then had a capacity of 100,000 i think for concerts it was limited to about 75,000 as stands at the far end was out of use because of tbe stage after the Hillsborough disaster in 1989 Wembley went to 80,000 all seated and concerts to about 72,000.

You talked about In The Air Tonight, there is a live version that blows your mind.
Pink Floyd, Moody Blues, and Tony's and Mike's solo music. Also ELP is a band you should check out to.
Yeah dude, Genesis was one of the biggest bands in the world at the time. Invisible Touch was a massive hit.
That's insane. I had NO idea they were that big. I was taken aback by the crowd at first lol. I'm so happy for them 🤣😁
@@L33Reacts If you ever get chance to watch this whole concert, you totally should. 80s Genesis is a jam.
@@L33Reacts Filmed the week of July 4th, 1987. About 2 years prior, the same stadium hosted Live Aid 1985 on July 13th that year. What you're looking at is the OLD Wembley stadium. A new one was rebuilt over top the old site in 2007.
@@L33Reacts They filled that stadium 4 nights in a row on that tour. Genesis were massive.
One of their best and really, most popular tracks!!!
Listen to " Home By The Sea part 1&2 ". Great song !!! 👍
Daryl is there dude - playing bass.
mama released 1983, best latter track they ever did, love it
I really enjoyed the power and energy in this performance... Phil is a natural up there. He killed it. And what a crowd!!
@@L33Reacts Think U might need to listen to the album version....NOT the video version that is shorter.
Then do Abacab next lol! It's the very next song from this Wembley show and it's hands down the best ever version.
Hmmmmmm should i give acabab another shot? Hmmm. I'll think about it. 🤣😁
@@L33Reacts Oh, consider the Three Sides Live version ...... ;) #trustmeimadoctor
No i´m not, just had to say it.... :D
I haven't heard this song in a long time and as I'm listening, it reminds me of NIN a lot, of Closer specifically. Anyway, love the song Mama, it's always been one of my favorites of Genesis-so unique, so interesting, so cool. Yes, Genesis was that big-they had been around a long time before this concert-one of the best bands of all time
Daryl played Steve’s parts; Mike played the pieces he created from And then there were three onwards.
Bro! Has anyone ever told you that you look exactly like NERDORK?
If you don't know who I'm talking about, look him up, and you'll see for yourself!! The resemblance is uncanny!!😲
Man your look. To camera on the haha ha bit made me almost wet myself 😂
Yeah its not the 70's Genesis, but still, it was something. One of the best Genesis song of their pop era.
Not even Gabriel did the same thing as in the ´70s.... Most people did not wear same clothes in the ´80s as in the ´70s... Times change, as do music.. If Genesis did not develope, they would cease to exist as they were... Yu need to make changes! Yes?
You must listen to and watch Pink Floyd Comfortably Numb Live at the Pulse Tour! What an experience!
As a BIG Genesis fan, I really must agree.... it´s really good!
You should react to Abacab live from this concert and Los Endos live is also great! I'm really enjoying your Genesis Journey
Abacab is the following song after Mama, however, IMHO the best version is from the album Three Sides Live and then the video version from that album.. But,, that´s My 2 cents on the matter!
@@nightHawk66I think this version is the best live abacab. Much fuller and faster
Domino has incredible fills by chester Thompson in this gig. The drums for the first half of this song was on tape. Chester joins halfway through. But seriously watch the drum duet from this gig
Check out their 'Mama' official video. It is incredible and leaves no doubt as to what this song is about. Odd but powerful subject matter.
Its just, i dont know... perfect
The whole concert is perfect honestly
Chester, of course, was in Frank Zappa's band, the Mothers of Invention, and was the drummer you watched playing Inca Roads live
Chester was also on the album Black Market with Weather Report.
Although I prefer Genesis with Steve and Peter they were still great at those point. I saw them in 78, 81, 82, 83, and 07.
Lo
@@L33Reacts Ok, well then... You need to hear the original... ;)
Genesis where a huge band in the mid 1980’s. I love both Prog Era Genesis and the more commercial Genesis post 1980.
Dude I seem to prefer the prog era but this era is effective and so damn catchy. I love it
If you think that's a large crowd it's small compared with the When in Rome concert.
They were massive, between Invisible Touch and We Can't Dance they had 10 hit singles.
@@ignatzmuskrat3000 he did appear in one episode of Miami Vice
And he played the detective in Hook, also did a role in some other movies.
@@nightHawk66 Hook, huh? I tried to watch that once...heh, I'll try harder next time.
@@nightHawk66 Everyone knows about the Miami Vice episode. Epic!
Phil doing a Gene Simmons with the tongue .
Abacab-live at the same concert as Mama.
Watch the performance of Los Endos on this as well - absolutely insane stuff!
Another great song is "I know what i like" live 1973 Shepperton. Peter Gabrial on vocals and Phil Collins on drums.
But I've seen the video and it was an excellent show.
yes. they were that big... came a long way from cancelling the last two shows of the lamb tour with Peter due to poor ticket sales
Bangin'
Wembley Stadium back then had a capacity of 100,000 i think for concerts it was limited to about 75,000 as stands at the far end was out of use because of tbe stage after the Hillsborough disaster in 1989 Wembley went to 80,000 all seated and concerts to about 72,000.
Love this one❤good pick. I want to recommend "Find the Cost of Freedom" by CSN. I don't think anyone has done it yet. I like to recommend the best of the best that haven't been done yet. I hope you love it.❤
Love your Hair.
