Re visiting this reaction. This performance....regardless of age....or subject content, is still on another level talent wise. Everything was just clicking here.... on a significantly windy stage. Props!
I was about 10 or 11 years old and became a Phil Collins fan after hearing “Something Happened on the Way to Heaven” (great song), and then in my new fandom saw this exact concert on TV, and was like “ok what Phil Collins song is this?!” This was before kids had the Internet let alone Google but I found one of my older cousins knew Phil Collins and had the Genesis album and Invisible Touch on cassette, but this exact song and recording was the beginning of my Genesis journey. And yes, the drums are awesome :)
Phil started his solo career in 1981, but he remained a member of Genesis until 1996, then got back with them in 2007 for the Turn it on Again tour. During the time he was solo and a member of Genesis there was a lot of touring. Genesis tours 1981-82-83-84-85-86-87-90-92 Phil’s solo tours 1982-83-85-86-87-89-90-94-95 He was everywhere. I don’t see how he had time to make records with all the tours.
Decidedly Creepy. And the crowd size is insane! Their official video for this tune is special and makes clear what the song is about. If you like drums (these guys have TWO drummers) try out LIVE 'Home By The Sea' and 'Second Home By The Sea' (one performance). Drums are crazy. Time to re-visit Genesis.
This is a very dark song -- about a guy who's become obsessed with a prostitute. Mike Rutherford (guitarist) came up with the drum pattern and Phil wrote the lyrics, intentionally choosing words which would sound good along with the music -- like when he says 'touch.' A lot of the way Genesis wrote during this period was via improvisation. The singer would be expected to improvise along with the music, and oftentimes they would figure out what the song meant during this process. Oh yeah -- Phil got inspiration for the laugh from Grand Master Flash and the Furious Five -- their song, 'The Message.' I wouldn't put too much stock in those trying to play this era of Genesis off against the Peter Gabriel led era. They're all great. They're all innovative. Genesis didn't become 'Phil's backup band.' Genesis was always primarily Tony and Mike's band -- and Peter's when he was with them. Phil was always considered a 'junior member' since he wasn't one of the founders, but most people assume he 'took over' because his stage presence became so dominant after he assuming the lead vocal role. I see people suggesting 'Home By the Sea,' but just so you know: It's really one long song divided up into two parts, i.e., 'Home By the Sea' and 'Second Home by the Sea.' The song cannot truly be appreciated unless both parts are done together. I would suggest finding the live version from 1992. Thanks for the reaction. I hope you'll do more Genesis!
I know the song, but I haven't seen the live video before. A quote from Phil Collins about the song: "It is just about a young teenager that's got a mother fixation with a prostitute that he's just happened to have met in passing and he has such a strong feeling for her and doesn't understand why she isn't interested in him ". The song is one of the most successful of Genesis and the stage presence of Collins is impressive. But there are other songs, by them, that I like much better. For example: "Bood On The Rooftops", but I could write a pretty long list now.
That's Chester Thompson on drums. He also played with Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention and Weather Report before joining Genesis from 1977 to 1996.
Everything Genesis is a part of rock history. In 1986, there were 5 songs in the top 15 that all had relations to Genesis. Peter Gabriel, Mike Rutherford's Mike and the Mechanics, Steve Hackett's GTR, Phil Collins and Genesis. They are a legendary band, inside and out. Pun intended
The song is about a young mans infatuation for a prostitute. He loves her, but their relationship is tainted by his lust and that he’s paying for her time. That’s what his demonic rant is about. He is showing the dark side of the relationship. In the official video, the band are playing inside a brothel. Many people Pooh Pooh post Peter Gabriel Genesis. Bit this song is pure rock and roll, as it should be played. An eighties classic from the band. But there is so much back story to this great band. If I were you, I would go ways back before moving forwards. I would recommend Stagnation and White Mountain. Get through those two, and I guarantee you will be hooked for life. Enjoy!
If I may, I would like to suggest a track by the original front man for Genesis, Peter Gabriel. I particularly enjoy the track 'In your Eyes' from the 'Secret World' tour. It is one of my favourite tracks and I wonder what you might think of it yourself.
Cece great song great reaction🥰 let me suggest the 3 following songs all from the same album as this one and they are Home By The Sea, Taking It All To Hard and It’s Gonna Get Better👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
Music is pretty subjective. The Phil vs Peter Gabriel thing is tiresome at best. It comes across as so "he wins and the other is awful" when in reality they are both tremendously talented musicians and perform at a level amongst the elite rock musicians of which there are many. I definitely enjoy them both.
I think this is is where the Genesis music becomes cloudy this is Genesis much later with only 3 members still in the band they wrote more popular tunes and found a new audience good luck to them ......................But this to me is not true Genesis and this is probably the first time I’ve hear this in 10 years to me and it’s only a personal thing but Genesis where much much much better in the 70’s Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett in the band that is the Genesis I listen to , in fact with concerts hopefully starting up again this year I have tickets to go see Steve Hackett in September he keeps it to the true value and core of the early Genesis but really it’s personal choice , this was nice to listen too but It’s not true Genesis to me and it’s about a man obsessed with a prostitute I think 👍
What a song! What are your thoughts about the song?

Love how they had fun with the wind. Professional.
One of the greatest vocal performances of his career.
I really enjoyed this song.

Thanks so much!
The vocal and guitar solo in this song is the most amazing of all time x
A person favorite of mine. Phil , before he was solo adding another great to his library.

I really enjoyed everything about this song, thanks.
Good Lord! So, so good in front of so, so many people. Billion dollar vocals and solid band performance. Wow! Great reaction!
Indeed. Thank you 😊
Definitely in their prime here. Great video.
Thanks 😊
Genesis In To Deep is a great song!
Thanks for the suggestion.
With Phil try 'Ripples'. With Peter Gabriel singing 'Cinema Show' or 'Musical Box'.

Have a listen to Supper's Ready !
Thanks for the suggestion.
Please, react to Genesis - Turn it on again Live Wembley 1987.
Sounds like a plan, thanks.

Really, check out the 1987 wembley Genesis gig . The zenith if live music.
Thanks for the request.
Omg lol
SHE has him prisoner! He is a prisoner of love. It is an adult themed song. I will leave it at that.
Gotcha.
Since Phil went solo, the rest of the band Genesis went their own ways and rarely play together. so this was a rare enough event.
React to Joss Stone while you're out looking for sugar (Aol Sessions)
Thanks for the request.
Hey pretty lady, do Solsbury Hill. Peter Gabriel blows Phil away
Thanks for the request and for the compliment 😊
Don't be silly now
SHUT UP PUPPET.
Peter Gabriel has nothing on Phil Collins. Don't be ridiculous.
