try YES Starship trooper from the live album Yessongs,,,,,,,a must for prog listeners
My favourite of many favourites. Another Tony Banks masterpiece. In a parallel world he should be regarded alongside the classical greats.
He now composes classical music, since Genesis is not together anymore.
I've been listening to Genesis since the late 70's, and I have often wondered what it is that fascinates me about their work. Apart from their mastery of their instruments, I think they have a special talent of building up and leave you in suspense without the logical release, for several go-arounds. Instead they bring you back into the whirlwind of the composition for another spin, build up, and suspense, until they finally release you.
There are several examples of this in their music, but this one is probably the most obvious. From my favorite album, by the way.
Glad to see people still enjoying the music I grew up with.
The music from British groups of the '60's, '70's and '80's is unmatched to this day. Genesis hold a place in the pantheon of great bands with their own sound and style, like Pink Floyd, or Yes, or The Who, or Jethro Tull, and on and on and on. I was lucky to be born in England in 1954 and the music was our lives.
I was born in the US in 1955 and I mainly agree, but with some exemptions.
Good choices you have here.
Amen to that🙏. They said Mozart’s music helped civilize people in his day. The “British Invasion” and certainly all you mentioned above helped humans expand their souls. I was there😊
Many bands want to create 1 masterpiece, Genesis created many. The gloryyears were amazing.
Tony Banks on piano and Stever Hackett on guitar......flawless
Tony was originally planning to play the Hackett part but he wasn't happy with it, so Steve asked him if he could give it a try. History.
The guitar solo in "Firth of Fifth" is considered by many to be one of the finest in rock music, and the live version from Seconds Out is worth checking out. In fact, Seconds Out may be one of the finest live albums ever. Thank you so much for taking time to listen to Genesis!
Immortal song, a real "manifesto" of the golden prog-era, when Genesis were Genesis....
Steve Hackett was the king of restraint and playing the perfect note and milking every last drop of emotion from each note. I just saw him playing this a few months ago its still just as transcendant.
The boy can play, never caught him with Genesis but I've seen him solo doing the "old stuff".
Firth of Fifth, on the Seconds Out album, was an epiphany for me. I never imagined “rock” music could be so amazingly beautiful. Steve Hackett’s solo might be the most beautiful guitar solo in music, period.
If you were thinking Opeth, Opeth was thinking Genesis.
As much as I love this original version, I agree the Seconds Out version is mind blowing. The thunderous duel drums send a shiver through me, and yes that guitar solo! ❤
Firth of Fifht without the piano intro and sung by the female voice of Phil? No thanks.
@@lukaf2393 I think Phil's voice is fine on FoF live, albeit less expressive than Gabriel's, but yes the absence of the piano intro is 'unfortunate'
Without piano intro 😕
@@lukaf2393Voice of Phil it's great!
Quite simply one of the best ROCK songs EVER !
Glad you enjoyed it. This whole album 'Selling England by the Pound' is a masterpiece.
Nice reaction. This was the greatest period for Genesis. Steve Hackett does a short classical intro on "Blood On The Rooftops" which is a beautiful track from a later album when Phil Collins was doing vocals and Hackett also has a great classical outro on "Racing In A..." from his solo album. I think you'd enjoy both of them.
My record needle used to jump when that bass kicked in. So powerful.
Glad you enjoyed this.
maybe the greatest solo ever.. you have to listen the live version
A firth is an estuary in Scottish. There is a River Forth in Scotland. It is a subtle joke that the Genesis imaginary river is the non-existent River Fifth. We travel down this river and see life flowing. The river ends at the firth and into the sea, just as we see life flowing to the end. A metaphor.
I had the privilege of seeing Genesis perform The Lamb...in 1975 and that one performance forever changed my whole approach to guitar, music and life. Here it is 2024 and my opinion of them has not nor will ever change. They were the best. Great post BTW.
Possibly one of the greatest prog masterpieces ever created.
At 9:16, that solo just comes back so powerful. Fantastic piece. Nobody did this stuff like early Genesis
You’re right. Light and shade. Power and restraint. So much taste produced by those so young.
@@mikedonoghues4018 I forget Gabriel was 23 when he left the band
Genesis influenced SO many other bands. You will love continuing with this band. Their music feels so organic. The orchestral elements and jazz influences that Genesis brings carry us away on a fantastic trip. So glad you finally found this band. Their depth of music is VERY deep and a lot of gems to find. Don't miss 'Supper's Ready'! It is less 'classical' and more.....hmmm, what?
You tell us!
Best band EVER, 1970/1978 period
It was awesome watching you react to this.❤
We could see how much you loved it as a guitarist.
Just seeing the smile on your face made my day
Thank you 😊!
Truly a beautiful masterpiece. Your analyses is accurate, to my ears! The piano intro. by Tony Banks is amazing. Genius.Steve on guitar, a great solo, and Mike's bass.... five star prog..
All their old stuff is Amazing The Lamb Lies Down On Broad Way is the album to do all the way threw I only discovered them about 10 years ago and they are in my top 5 bands Peace from New Orleans
I'm so glad you enjoyed this track, it's a classic.
More beautiful melodic Genesis?
Try "Carpet Crawlers" and "Blood On the Rooftops" - both are wonderful!
Thank you for the suggestions!
The flute part is played by vocalist Peter Gabriel.
He s amazing
All of them
Are in such a great piece
Magnificent Genesis and majestic composition by Tony Banks and brilliant solo by Steve Hackett. Check out Hacketts more recent rendition with full orchestra in Royal Festival Hall...Special!
Listen again and when the guitar solo starts, don't think in musical technical terms. You just close your eyes and imagine an eagle flying high, sometimes flapping its wings to gain height and other times just hovering. It is an unforgettable experience.
This song, along with many of their others, has some terrific melodies. And credit the drummer; I can't imagine it's easy to come up with drumbeats to the brand of music of Genesis.
Phil Collins: "I'm a drummer who sings a bit", possibly one of the greatest understatements of all time.
Phil Collins, just a master musician and complete legend.
Technical Brilliance
Indeed!
It took Tony 2 years to write this masterpiece. Amazing music.
Wonderfull reaction, thank you so much.
At 70's prog bands were really good. Musicians were well educated and skilled. They took influences from classical, jazz, contemporary etc. Everything was very new and progressive in the proper sense of the word. Later bands took influences from them 😀. In a way its not as progressive, even if it is in the same genre.
From the same album The Cinema Show is almost as great. Originally it continued straight to The Aisle of Plenty.
This was golden. Your wonder and joy is what we all have felt with this song.
the older i get and the more reaction videos i see of people now loving the music i grew up with 50+ years ago gets me a little emotional. on the one hand i am proud of myself for liking this kind of music when i was a teenager, and on the other hand it's nice to see confirmation from people today listening and liking it. back in the early '70s it was expected to play 3 chord guitar rock. this kind of Prog-classical-orchestral stuff was poo-pooed at the time. but i knew that it was special then, and i'm glad you find it special now.
Jesus. You just melted me heart man. 😅 This was a great comment from you. It feels like i connected to you 50 years ago. Im glad you were able to enjoy my reaction and more than happy to see that i could connect with people with amazing taste in music not matter the time!
1973! If you never listen before, it was really time to go in, magnificent piano intro, beautiful structure with classical (baroque you said !) 😉 inspiration and of course a gorgeous guitar solo, like several waves. Harmony filled with diminished chords. Everything we dream of
Supper's Ready next please . A 20th century masterpiece .
Music like this will not be duplicated ever again. Light years beyond the modern crap.
The entire album is perfect. Cheers.
The Firth of Forth is a river in Scotland.
The change to "Fifth" refers to the cercle of fifths chords progression they employ in this song.
Great reaction. Please explore more early Genesis!!
More to come!
I grew up with bands like Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Camel, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Gentle Giant.
Most modern bands don’t even come close to this quality.
Exceptions are: Haken, IQ, Riverside, Ayreon, Nightwish, Flower Kings, Pineapple Thief, Porcupine tree.
Marillion
@@franckb8279 it seems I’m a bit older than you; they came later. Great band Marillion, still love them very much; and Fish of course.
@@palantir135 Fish is awesome too
@@franckb8279 he’s in Ayreon’s The electric castle live and other tales.
I can recommend all three live blu-rays/albums. And of course the studio albums.
@@palantir135 Got this one. And Actual fantasy. And Final experiment.
I got into this band when I was six. Thank you sisters
Thanks to your sister for suggesting great stuff!
Well Jone Ruis that's exactly the way to listen to this master piece. I enjoyed yr reaction. Probably you van try more songs of Genesis. Really really they are amazing. Try some live songs. On stage they really comes to live.
70s progressive Genesis is my favorite band and music of all times
Glad to found it!
Now you should watch Steve Hackett [and musicians] performing this live.
Steve is a pretty good classical guitarist and clearly hugely influenced by Segovia.
The title is a pun about the River Forth in Scotland, known as the Firth of Forth.
I think you underestimate his classical skills a bit there - he is an extremely skilled classical guitarist.
"Selling England by the Pound" was John Lennon´s favourite Album!
I hade a chat with Steve a couple of years ago at a gig about this song and he told me that it was performed on a Gibson LP ´56. Today he uses a Fernandez wth sustain.
I HIGHLY recommend You to see his Live performance with Steve and "The Genesis Revisited"!
This was such a joy to watch!
Greatest group ever❤❤❤❤❤❤
Musicianship at his best. Rutherford bass playing is very underated, especially on this piece.
Selling England By The Pound, on which Firth of Fifth appears, was released in 1973. The album is a prog rock classic. Many would argue Firth of Fifth is the best track on it (and indeed the best Genesis song) however the remainder of the album is pretty much as good from start to finish apart from one mercifully short Phil Collins pop song in the middle. Cinema Show is generally considered the other truly great track on this record. The other two classic Genesis records are Foxtrot (1972) and The Trick of the Tail (1976) which are almost as good as Selling England By The Pound.
There is also an especially excellent live album called Seconds Out recorded in Paris released in 1977 which features most of best songs from all three of the aforementioned three studio albums played to an astonishingly high standard of musicianship for a rock band. In particular side 4 (or the second half of CD2) consists of Cinema Show (from Selling England by the Pound), Dancing on a Volcano and Los Endos (both from Trick of the Tail) with which they ended their show for the 1976/7 tour. This finale to the show absolutely stunned audiences across the globe, blew their minds basically, and turned Genesis into a major international band. it's still stunning to listen to it today. Seconds Out is worth getting for this monstrous 25m finale alone.
Steve Hackett's current band played the Selling England album live a couple of years back. They're such a good band now. One thing I love about that show is how much better More Fool Me, The Battle of Epping Forest and After the Ordeal are live. The whole thing is amazing. If you haven't already, track down the DVD/Blue Ray.
Hey Jone, enjoy your reactions, my favorite Genesis if from the same album, "The Cinema Show". I'm sure it will make you smile. I'm checking out what you have reacted to now, but if you haven't reacted to Yes' ,"Awaken", you're in for a profound experience. I feel like I've been escorted into the throne room of God. I have many interesting avant garde suggestions as well.
GREAT reaction Jone! My introduction to this album was through the first song, Dance With The Moonlit Knight (which is spectacular if you haven't heard it!), then I got the album, and I had to pick up jaw up off the floor after hearing this song! Such a beautiful, melodic composition - this is truly when I became a Genesis fan (as far as the older, progressive era - with Peter Gabriel).
HIGHLY recommend checking the live version from Steve Hackett, from 2013, at the Royal Festival Hall - it's, for me, one of the ultimate versions (as it has accompanying orchestra!)
Cheers!
Selling England By The Pound came out the same year Dark Side of The Moon did, 1973 ✨️🎶✨️
Check out the cinema show next!
you have to listen SUPPER'S READY
the title is a pun on the name of a Firth in Scotland called: The Firth of Fourth - - you can see it on a map.
What else can you say but MASTERPIECE 😅😊
Oh yeah
by the painkiller (songmeanings)
19y ago
For some reason ive always assumed that the fifth mentioned in the title refers to a musical interval, the most essential musical interval 5 steps in a scale, or seven semitones.
Great reaction, thanks ❤
Loved your reaction and seeing your trained ear go to work immediately as the song started. Be sure to react to "Cinema Show" from the same album. You will no doubt be amazed and enjoy the ear candy.
as far as I know most 70s/80s bands use the organ -- amongst the best in my choice are: Genesis, King Crimson, Yes, Rick Wakeman, Emerson Lake and Palmer (ELP), The Moody Blues, Procol Harum. etc.
I love the Phil Collins Genesis, but they were a completely different band from the Peter Gabriel Genesis musically. My preference is this version that produced such beautiful songs such as this. BTW, The title is a pun on the Firth of Forth, the estuary of the River Forth in Scotland. The song theme relates to the "river of constant change" thus the constant time signatures changes.
Try Blood on the Roof Top from the Wind And Wuthering album. You'll love the guitar work.
Tony Banks shines!
genesis like pink floyd are in a genre of their own. even though there is a prog rock genre, those two bands in their own way just epitomise the amazing british influence in music. but i also love so many others like camel, marillion, yes and many others... and yes many people have been inspired by both genesis and pink flowyd!
Firth is a word in the English and Scots languages used to denote various coastal waters in the United Kingdom, predominantly within Scotland. In the Northern Isles, it more often refers to a smaller inlet.
the Firth Of Forth is a well known Firth in Scotland. There is a well known bidge that spans the Forth - The Forth Bridge - which culminates in a well known British saying about a never ending job being like painting the Forth bridge, once finished, you start again immediately, so never really complete it
When they played this liove, they often skipped the piano intro if they didn't have access to a proper, well-tuned grans piano. They thought that the electric pianos or available synthesizers couldn't match the Steinway they used in the studio, and which they felt it needed.
Interesting and kind of sad if i were to go to see the whole thing. I think the piano part is special!
Best song ever.
listen to the 'Second out' live version, Steve Hackett longer solo! One of Genesis best tracks
The Firth of Fourth is a river in Scotland near Edinburgh. The title implies this is one beyond reality. Interesting title.
I love how at the end of all of that, you get an amazing lyrical stanza to cap it off "The sands of time were eroded by the river of constant change." Geez..not bad for a bunch of 23 year old young men huh?
The whole last section is a guitar solo by Steve Hackett.
GENESIS... ...great!
Peter Gabriel and Phil Colins.
The old recordings are reminding very much to the music from Mike Oldfield......
Love Firth of Fith, but from a classical guitar perspective, I prefer Genesis Blood on the Rooftops.
Thanks for the suggestion! Tonight im making this reaction!
@@JoneRuizVery welcome, enjoy
These guys were 23 when they created this.
Great song, one of the best from the old Genesis, though I could have done without the superstitious BS at the end of the video. Firth is a Scottish word meaning inlet or strait, most notably the Firth of Forth. The title of this song is a play on that name.
For more of what you enjoyed here try the song The Lamia.
Between the overproduced, soulless vocal centric music of today, my walk down memory lane onto Genesis Road always feel satisfying and energizing. Thanks for the reminder.
please do all early genesis bro
Yeah. Is in my planning!
@JoneRuiz it's not even for me that I'm asking this, I'm pretty sure as a musician you will be mindblowed by some of the best music ever made, and that lasts forever, every minute of those jewels are brilliant
They were just well educated
capolavoro ❤❤❤
Muito bom! Uma sugestão: One For The Vine.
First of all, listen to the rest of the album. Then you must listen to The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway and after that they're Opus Magnum supper's ready which is close to a half hour long
Capolavoro
Imagine the amounts of weed
Shame about the stupid comment at the end of the lyric video.
Which has nothing to do with Genesis. Whoever uploaded the video tacked that on.
@@jwsel I agree. I was just saying it's a shame it was there.
That flat earth shit is not them
