Thank you so much for your perfect recipe. My husband, who partly works in Los Angeles, asked me for fish tacos. I've tried to cook them here in Russia as you recommended and it works!
I made this for dinner this evening with the cilantro. My husband is a picky eater and mostly is a meat and potatoes kind of guy. When I took one of these for him to eat he gave me a look and said “plain Food, your always trying to feed me something different “ I asked him to just taste it and I had plain fish if he didn’t like it. HE LOVED THE FISH TACOS!!! Alto he didn’t want the sour cream on them he did top them with Dear Candy (sweet pickled jalapeños) YUMMY they were delicious and he would eat them again😁 Thx and keep the videos coming
I had a friend named Ali when I lived on Maui in a town named kehei in2010 to 2011. A week before I left we went drinking and she introduced me to fish tacos. I didn't want to love them but I did. I'm grateful. When done properly they're fantastic. Thanks preppy. And thank you Ali. If your watching I never forgot you.
Just made this for Valentine's Day Dinner. This guys knows what he's talking about. The only difference was that I just mixed in the radishes with the mixture and added crumbled feta cheese on top of the tacos. Otherwise great recipe. Roasting the tacos on the open flame was a nice touch too. Turned out awesome.
John, fav Cole slaw dressing as a side for fried fish or oysters... 1 head of green cabbage to 1/2 head red cabbage (shredded); 1 bottle of Kraft Coleslaw Dressing, small can (or 1 cup) of pineapple chunks (or more to taste), 3/4 - 1 cup dark raisins, S & P to taste. Marinate in fridge a couple of hours. That's it! Enjoy and you're welcome! Huge fan here. Rick
Love it! Gotta make these fish tacos with or without avocados they look delicious! Keeper recipe! The colors look amazing in contrast to the tortilla. Thanks John.
The absolute funniest line I have heard on youtube, "looks like a little shop of horror". A garden fresh cabbage. I love them, I grow red cabb, and will never think on them again without Johns' hysterical line of commentary. MORE BRILLIANT MEXICAN RECIPES LIKE THIS, PLEASE. Keep rocking that cilantro. I could eat cabb and cilantro 24-7, and yes, at 66 I have learned that the world is equality divided amongst "soap" (common description) haters and lovers. Ask your mom!
Red onions always work super well with all Mexican dishes and salsa! Too many use white onions or yellow onions and they’re too juicy and less sweet to the point that the dishes taste mainly of strong onions and all herbs and flavors are over powered. Then they end up over spicing the food to compensate and it confused the palate. The best Mexican dishes are those that balance out the spices and don’t use too many. Red onions help you balance that out without having to use high sugars to balance out the flavors. Red onions balance that out with the little bit of sweetness it add. Then no sugar needs to be added. Just a splash of apple cider vinegar and lime with garlic salt really creates a balanced flavor. For more of a chili taste you can add pinches of cummin to taste. It’s great for tacos. I’m so glad you use red onions. It shows you know how to balance that wonderful Mexican taste out. As for to coleslaw add a teaspoon or so of ranch flavor with some freshly homemade bacon bits and a nut like sunflowers with the normal citrus flavoring with slaw. Add a hint of horseradish it the slaw and no vinegar. All plants soak up vinegar way more than anything else. This is why plain white vinegar is a good way to kill weeds in your yard. It doesn’t pickle with cabbage like it dies on other things. It cancels out other flavors. So use your citrus dressing with a table spoon of ranch dressing. Then all more crunch with a meaty flavor with finely chopped almond or with sunflowers. I also all fresh finely diced make and that helps a lot. Broccoli in a slaw is good, but raw finely chopped kale really balances out the tardiness of the slaw and makes it more manageable for those that don’t like slaw normally. I have a lot of ppl over that don’t like slaw, but with that bit of ranch dressing in it they love it and eat it up.
In Guatemala we make something similar to a Pico de Gallo, it’s called chirmol. We grill the tomatoes, so that it chars and able to peel the skin off. Chop onions, Yerba buena, jalapeño or Serrano and let them sit in lime juice, while you char the tomatoes. Once the tomatoes are done, you peel the skin, chop, and throw them in with the rest of the ingredients. Mix and add salt to taste
Thanks for this. I get an upset stomach when eating avocados so this recipe without the avocado is perfect for me. You have a great speaking voice and personality.

Okay, I had to do some substitutes (doterra Lime EO instead of lime juice and green cabbage, white onions, no cilantro BUT I did have avocado) but WOW! these were PERFECT! Very versatile
Fabulous-looking tacos! I never would have thought of using cotija... queso fresco is my typical "go to". If you buy your tortillas at a "tortillería", they're ALWAYS that soft and fresh! Surely you have them in L.A. if we have them in Chicago. Thanks for another GREAT recipe!
Red cabbage slaw: very thinly slice 1/2 Red cabbage, mince 1 small onion, add salt & pepper. Easiest made in a food processor. Mix in 3/4 cup mayo. Mix very well to get the mayo throughout. Great right away and better the next day.
Wow mega amounts of lime throughout the recipe! Love it along with cilantro. Yum-o! Too bad for cilantro haters. I feel sorry for them, I know they can’t help it. Thanks John.

I followed your formula tonight...except with lingcod. My wife pulled the wrong fish out of the freezer, which is my fault because I didn't label after catching and packaging. It turned out fantastic! A great blend of flavors. I bailed on the single corn tortilla over flame, not because my fingers are heat sensitive, but because my first taco disintegrated before I could eat it. For me it worked better with two tortillas warmed in the microwave. A big shout-out to Westport Deep Sea Charters and the crew on "The Slammer" for making my first rockfish/lingcod fishing trip a huge success.
This is actually really close to how we prepare fish tacos here in Baja California! nice and tasty. btw cant believe your husband doesnt like cilantro, its so delicious!
