The Rise And Fall Of The Toyota Prius

- The Toyota Prius was the world’s first mass produced hybrid car and it still might be the most famous of all time. The nameplate was once synonymous with hybrids, and a symbol of the automotive future. But now sales of the Prius are falling as it has become a victim of a changing market and perhaps, its own success.

The Rise And Fall Of The Toyota Prius
I live in California. Priuses are everywhere. And there's no need to buy new ones because they last forever.
STEPX Yup, like all Toyotas!
Toyota and Honda are a bless.
They last forever and need less maintenance if taken care of them.
Strong, reliability, and fuel economy.
All the best
Same in dc...even I fell into the Prius fad and I don’t think I’ll be looking for a new car for the next 10 years. I wouldn’t switch my 2010 for a newer model..especially since the interior is smaller than the older models
New Priuses are Electric, also Toyota investing in self driving techs
@@abdokl6828 Not Honda Hybrid, historically the lifespan of most Honda hybrid pre-2018 are less than 1/4 of Toyota. Transmission issue and battery issue is more prone in Honda. HOnda used Belt-CVT manwhile toyota use full-gear planetary system. no belt, no torque converter at all.

AMEN! Joe Biden did that!
Prius is still the best bang for the buck when it comes to hybrids. I know one person that has put over 300,000 miles on his Prius and it still has the original battery!
Some pass 500k miles in original battery but still less than 12 years old. I believe it is more about aging and temperature range where you live. In hot weather, it died faster, about 12 years. In cold and mild weather, it tends to last much longer, more than 15 years.
What about the Corolla hybrid? It’s the same platform but 10k less.
@@rondhole where I live is hot as hell half of the year, so if I buy a 2015 Prius it wont last here? :(
@@igorrosales1799 Prius in average last about 10 years in really hot weather. But if you park it on the shade or garage, it will last really long. When you drive it, Prius AC is really strong and has no problem with cooling. The main problem is the aging in hot temperature when you park it. it is even worse if you buy EV like Nissan Leaf or VW Golf with air cooling. Get only with active liquid cooling. Tesla, Bolt, BMW i.3, etc. But small Turbo charge engine will not last either, way shorter than prius lifespan.
Why would you buy a hybrid when a diesel TDI blows it away in fuel efficiency? Also, it's a looks thing. I would never buy an Asian import. European cars are sleeker and much more elegant looking. Higher quality brands (VW/Audi, BMW, Volvo).
I'm 40 years old. I have never seen a car as reliable as the prius in my whole life. My wife has a 2007 2nd gen prius that she purchased brand new. The only thing she's done is the annual maintanance. The car is always driving, and it just go's and gos. Incredible! I imagine their sales have declined a bit due to the fact that you have more to choose from now. For example the rav4.
At the end of the day hybrids were always considered to be the stepping stone until we got to fully electric cars. Thank you Toyota for what you designed and developed.
newswars-dotcom Umm... Tesla??
I live in the midwest and an all electric vehicle would be useless as an only vehicle. Even at 400 miles between charges that isn't enough. It is not unreallistic here to drive most of a day to reach somewhere. And most of that driving is in the in the middle of nowhere and even the towns that you do find do not have charging stations. Only the largest towns have a charging station and even those are way too slow, you don't have that much time to stop.
Maybe one day but I think we will see hydrogen powered cars combined with electric. Or some other low pollution generator/engine with a decent battery and motors.
No not really. All electric vehicles are still 20+ years away from Mass adoption if at all. Battery tech is still not close
@@xXxJustCallMeM Buy the Hybrid, problem solved.

Exactly. Toyotas are known for there longevity. So Toyota actually succeeded what they wanted to do. Now its really no need to produce any next gen Prius.
They also have two downsides which are a showstopper at least to some people: Only the Prius IV is officially specified for towing trailers and you get close to maximum allowed weight with all five seats occupied with adults before you even add any cargo.
They have the lowest cost of ownership of any car. Be happy to own one when the time is right.

Our family 2011 Prius has done 294,000 miles with just regular maintenance, no repairs. It has saved us an enormous sum at the gas pump too
Aboo Rawat have you ever changed the battery for the electric motors?
Batteries fail, but not often at all. Turns out they are pretty sturdy. The batteries are always kept between 40% - to 80% of charge, the charging and discharging process is always very closely monitored by the vehicle. These batteries last a long time, and when they fail, it is about 1k€ to replace. If a turbo on your conventional car fails, that is likely to be more expensive. Transmission or clutch might be even worse. The Toyota/ Lexus hybrids don't have any of that.
@John That's unlucky - my Gen 2 Prius is 14 years old, currently at over 230k km, working fine
@John $1500 to buy the battery and change it yourself
@John The greencarreport.com says Toyota will warranty the battery for 8 years (10 years in California) or 100,000 miles with no pro rating.
"Gas prices has fallen."
(laughs in California gas prices)
California adds a new tax when gas prices drop. Smart but crooked.
@Carl James Sarcasm my good man. CA gas is taxed nearly 50 cents a gallon as of July 2019. Prices are high already and they require seasonal blends that supposedly burn cleaner based on temperature, which gives the oil industry more opportunities to jack up prices. The State looks at the cars clogging the streets and freeways as cash cows 💰🐮 (rather than constituents in need of relief).
They know residents are mentally resigned to high and changing prices. They always get ready tax increases for various “reasons” and implement them at will. Residents go about their hamster wheel existences of “happiness” not realizing they are getting fleeced more each day.
You’ll see them speak so fervently about high prices, while silently raising taxes. They nearly never back off (expire, recall) taxes either, just instal more. They have more than enough to govern the state, but governance is not the goal. Corrupt they become. Devious they are. Therefore, “smart but crooked”; devious and corrupt.
Side note, CA state masters (who long to be masters of the country and the world) stoke the primal fears of residents all day by incessant propaganda to manifest their self-imposed role as savior or deity. Good wise people are shuttered, the masses suffer. Yay, California!
(laughs in German gas prices)
The reason gas prices are so high in California is because there are only two refineries that can make our "Boutique gas". If either one is down for maintenance prices will go up about a buck a gallon. While everywhere else in the nation everything stays the same.
6.25 a gallon in Downt L.A.. We need to go Hydorgen with that price.
You totally missed one crucial point - Toyota has introduced the hybrid technology in most of its (and Lexus') lineup.

Tesla was invented in almost the same year (1997 vs 2003).
D Gillies Im sorry but im not gonna pays $33-120k for an all electric car that takes 5-8 hours to charge. Teslas are for the rich, and unless you are a doctor, chances are real slim.

Kimberly Riley yikes. Texas! That’s cute. To think that compares to Cali. We own property there it’s not so great.
I’m struggling to see her Prius is failing I have a new one it’s averaging 55 miles a gallon my car has nothing to do with my status symbol as a man and I love that car
“Gas prices have also fallen”
This didn’t age well
I love my Prius wagon and they made a big mistake by discontinuing it. I fit as much into the back as a small pickup truck, and get 39-53 MPG.
I’m also disappointed they discontinued the Prius V. I have a 2012 with 119,00 miles on it. No issues whatsoever. I love it!
Best car I've ever owned.
Despite what this little CNBC hit piece is trying to achieve, my next car will also be a Prius.
Ellen Smith The Prius V was/is a great vehicle. It’s also amazing how much I can put in my generation 2 Prius!
@@davet11 they are WRONG and dont know wtf they are speaking on
@@Pistolmike59 overseas you can get prius v with a 3rd row
I have owned twin turbo V12 Mercedes, Aston Martin Vantage, Jaguar XJ, Lexus LX models, Tundra, Ford diesel, and currently Ram Cummins diesel. I also have a 2005 Prius with over 300K on it. My top 2 favorite cars to ever own may change from time to time. But that Prius will always be one of the two. It has never let me down. I have driven that car all over USA. Still looks almost new.
Wait just wait when the gas prices go up again. I still rock my Prius. I'm on my 4th one. I do a ton of driving long distance and I've hit 100K Mi on two of them so far. As far as electric goes, many many places around the US do not yet have electric hookups, I do a lot of driving in rural areas, and you don't have the ability to "recharge" which is why a hybrid will still be viable even 50yrs from now, it offers an EV mode as well as full gasoline modes, so why limit yourself to one type of "power"? The only thing Tesla has been doing is improving the Li-batteries in terms of amperage and capacity, which is a very GOOD thing, if we can improve the longevity of Li-batteries, it could be that a fully EV makes sense.
RIGHT!!
That’s why I got a Chevy Volt a few years ago. 40 miles electric then 300 miles range on gas. And 236 lb ft of torque off the line made it pretty quick.
Gas prices have fallen? wow this hasn't aged well.
Fall?!? Have you ever been to NY? Have you seen cabs today that are mostly Prius, not pos caprice?
If I did not live in the middle of nowhere, I'd be driving a Prius instead of a 4Runner.
The Caprice was a REAL automobile with real American V8 power, not a weak hybrid.
@@apolloniaaskew9487 Caprice was a POS with handling of a supermarket cart. I know - I drove a cab in the late 80's. Just like any gm masterpiece. BTW, "real american" is a questionable compliment.
Bet they feel stupid now. Prii are selling like hotcakes in 2022.
I wanna Tesla myself; a owner of the 2013 Toyota Prius Plug In currently.
As a current lessee of a Mirai, I am debating between the model 3 and prius prime as my next vehicle.
I'm leaning towards the Prius. It makes much more financial sense.

When ur in europe u wont need prius lol the corsa does same mpg as prius
May 2021 cost of gas ⛽️ is $5 per gallon , we have widespread unemployment, consumers have limited disposable income, AND THE USED TOYOTA PRIUS IS AN IDEAL CAR 🚗 IN 2021! The cost of the 2003 thru 2018 fleet is incredibly economical!
When there was no competition, the Prius could get away with looking poxy.
Now it can't.
EXACTLY, its not a bad car but it needs to bring more to the table, besides mpg and reliability to attract the younger buyers who are likely to hop in NEW vehicles

Idk where yall live that your gas is cheap but here in cali gas is 3.77 a gallon
ChillGamer83 its 2.80 in Michigan
We are progressive in California.
Californians voted to raise their gas taxes and yet I see no road repairs. My neighborhood roads are still crappy while the nice rich area where most people drive EV cars have nice paved roads. A quick message to the city and all we get is a patch job whereas the rich gets their roads completely repaved. Smh.
2.49 in Virginia
mrjjthor Thor what did you think was gonna happen?
I will always love my 2011 Prius, over 222,222 miles and still going like the Energizer Rabbit. Drive a Tesla and you're taking a risk finding a charge station. The Prius technology is still advanced. If you're a Prius owner at traffic light the engine cuts off quietly and you don't hear the engine start up like those new cars.
The problem is: a few years back Toyota had only the Prius as a Hybrid vehicle on sale in US, so if you wanted to have a reliable and economical car you had to go with it. Today it's totally different:
If you want more space, take RAV4 Hybrid
If you want to have a compact sedan, go with the Corolla, which is even cheaper than the Prius.
I think Toyota Hybrid are still the near Future, because the licium battery manufacturing process is very environment unfriendly. Plus you can't refuel an electric car everywhere and in three minutes! And not just that. Here in europe we have a Corolla hatchback Hybrid as a family car, and not because we are green and hype, but to save on fuel and have depenable transportation!
Licium battery and lithium as well is mostly nontoxic. You're thinking of lead acid or nickel metal chemistry.
Lithium ion batteries are also reused for decades for buildings after their ten year vehicle life.
gas is the 4:70 right now 😅😢
I got one in 2021. Love my Prius prime. 650+ total miles using gas+electricity when I take road trips. If I just take it for commuting, then I pump gas once a month. My work is 30miles away from where I live.
Had a Prius for years, was going to trade my 2017 in for a 2019 until I saw one...ugly in the front and a big screen confusing computer that reflected glare. Instead got a Honda Clarity and a Tesla.
They went out of their way to make the Prius ugly sadly. Now Hyundai Ioniq is much better looking and more ergonomic.
I bought mine in 2014 put 200,000 miles, never had any issues and just bought the new Prius Prime! plus you get a bunch of tax incentive rebates $5000 worth in California
A more appropriate title: "The Toyota Prius is not the only fuel efficient car anymore."
All I heard you talk about was fuel efficiency. A car's cost-effectiveness is more than fuel efficiency. You also need to take into account the reliability of the entire car. There's so many reports of Priuses having upwards of 300K miles with only having basic maintenance done. There's also another use for this type of hybrid cars -- it can be used as fuel efficient generators (with minor modifications). It's great for emergencies, or a weekend (or longer) camping/off-grid adventures!

10 Years from now there is going be a video about the "Rise and Fall of Tesla" 👀
Perhaps... if other manufactures can lock in a lot of battery manufacturing ability and catch up with self-driving tech
I wouldn't bet on it. Tesla is still eons ahead on battery, motor technology and has by far the best charging network. By far.
Lol
If Elon continues to make outlandish claims, I’d have to agree. His semi doesn’t make any sense so that’s not an asset for Tesla either!
Newzchspy having the best charging network isn’t enough, they need drastically more coverage to be a serious competitor to fossil fuels.
I really liked the Prius. It was a smooth ride. The miles per gallon was amazing. I drove from central VA to south Mass and got 65 MPG on the way there and 55 on the way back. I am not quite sold on an electric car quite yet.
Now, being in central VA, I did decide to get a Jeep for one of the major flaws of the Prius, it does not like ice/snow/gravel/dirt roads. I do miss the Prius for the MPG.
The Toyota Prius was affordable for the average consumer. It had decent gas mileage too.
Still is. You can get a Gen 2 Prius for under USD 5000, and it's still a very nice car.
Richard Steiner i think its the best time for me to buy a used car prius ;) 6-7 years ago the price was way too high.
Bought a Prius C 2013. Still love it and going to drive this one till the wheels fall off! Only fill up ever 2.5 months! Talk about great gas savings, which is the only reason I purchased it! Not so great in the snow but I was used to a all wheel drive before.
I love my Prius. I have had it for over 6 years and not a single repair. My car is almost 13 years old. My Ford Focus broke down nearly once a month.
I was not a big Prius fan, but when my oldest daughter approached driving age, we began researching. We wanted a reliable car that would be affordable, safe, & would handle some winter weather.
We bought used w/ 110,000 miles, and have been very happy with it. It even started right away on a -10 morning when my van refused to turn over.
The only negative on our 2010 Prius is the gps system it comes with. We don’t care for it at all; but a newer one we test drove did have a better gps system.
There's no reason for a Prius when the RAV4 Hybrid exists.
And no reason for either when the Tesla exists.
