Building a Tiny Windsor Chair // Woodworking

- Tiny things, well made, are even harder to build than their big brothers.
Two weeks ago, I was able to take a week off with two of my best friends, April Wilkerson and Jenny Bower, to build another chair with Greg Pennington at the Pennington School of Woodworking. This time though, I built a TINY Windsor chair! With the upcoming move and everything that entails, it was important to take a week off for a silly project with friends to recharge and get ready for the upcoming chaos. BONUS, those who have been wanting to hear some more mandolin playing will have a little treat in the middle of the video as well! As silly as a tiny chair may be, it requires the exact same process to build as a full size Windsor chair. It is just as strong and well built, and actually takes even longer than a regular size chair to make, but it is so dang cute, and everyone who sees it smiles. Just like a big chair, building a tiny Windsor Chair is a green woodworking project that incorporates many different woodworking processes, riving, splitting and shaping the spindles, carving the chair seat, steam bending the chair back, turning the legs on the lathe, routing the rockers, and much more.

My jaw dropped when I saw that it was you playing the music. You have been truly blessed with an abundance of talent! Would love to hear more of your music. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! There will be more to come :)
I was incredibly impressed by the mandolin playing! Very beautiful touch!
Thank you!
It is so great to hear you talking about Greg and the community. I am taking a class with him in 5 weeks.
You are in for SUCH a treat!
I remember building my own steam box when I made the rails for some miniature spiral stair cases I was making. I'd love to do that course..
I'm left with a warm heart after watching your video.
That makes me happy!
You are going to love living in Nashville. The people, the music, the crafts - right up your alley. I live some miles south east of Nashville in a small town where music and crafts are a way of life. I have a very small Windsor, smaller than yours, that is occupied by the favorite stuffed toy of a long ago Scottie.
Thank you! I'm very excited to get down there! Many good adventures await.
Love your enthusiasm.
Thank you! Attitude is everything!
I have heard you play your mandolin before and was impressed then as I am now. You are a talented lady to be sure. I always enjoy your videos and look forward to the next one to post. I really enjoy the outtakes you occasionally insert. the furry friends each unique with their cuteness. But this chair that you construct is the pinnacle of woodworking craftsmanship. It is delicate yet sturdy, functional, and pleasing to the eye. Keep on smiling and the world will smile in return.
Thanks so much! I'm so glad you enjoy it all. This one was my favorite one yet!
Beautiful little chair. Any hand made Windsor is a good Windsor in my book. I turn 50 in a couple of years and one of Greg's classes is definitely on my wish list. I've always wanted to build a Windsor from scratch or take a kayak building workshop. Decisions, Decisions.... Thanks for posting and all the best with your move.
You absolutely MUST take a class from Greg. It will change your life!
Chair building is addictive. Haven't tried windsor chairs, but after reading Hal Taylor's book and watching the video, I made a sculpted rocking chair.. One led to another, and another and another.
With no more room for rocking chairs, I tackled a set of 6 dining chairs for the kitchen with the teaching of Tom McLaughlin. Your video is quite inspiring... and very well done. Thank you...
Thank you! Tom is the man! I've gotta get out East to visit him.
So so happy April shared your channel. Beautiful videos
Thank you! April is the bestest.
Love your videos Anne! Lots of love and prayers to you and your husband for your move. May it be a safe one. My son and daughter live 30 minutes east of Nashville. I miss them daily.
Thank you so much! We will take all the prayers we can get, this is gonna be quite an adventure to say the least!
This looks like an episode of a PBS woodworking / lifestyle show. I am just so impressed with what you are doing, and I hope I can get my 8 year old granddaughter interested in your channel.
That is exactly what we were going for! Thanks for the compliments. Send your granddaughter to watch the animal videos ;)
Wonderful little chair Anne, lucky bunnies!!
Thank you!
Thank you for allowing us in your life. I enjoyed watching all of you laughing and getting important work done..
Great video, Good Luck with everything you do.
Thank you! Very kind.
Enjoyed the chair building and the mandolin and the guitar playing. All good and inspirational........
jcbbe glad to hear it!!
You are incredibly talented! Never take your gifts for granted! God bless.

Super duper awesome video Anne. Love the story
Thanks so much Tyler! It's my favorite so far.
Best video yet. Justin slayed it (again).
Thank you Tom! He is so dang good.
Delighted to hear more of your music! Sounds like a fun week based on the number of times you said laugh in the video. And great wood working as well! Thanks!

Many have already said it, but I too am impressed by the mandolin playing.
Ha, I forgot, the Windsor chair is very beautiful.
Thank you very much! I've been trying to practice to get ready for the move to Country Ville!
Wow, I never knew so much went into building a Windsor Chair by hand. Geez you’re talented. Very nice job.
Thank you! It is deceptively step-intensive ;)
Never heard you giggle so much! Glad you had the good company.
The right people can certainly turn me into a giggle factory!
Great story. And even a greater chair!
Thanks brother!
Loved the chair and the bunny
That bunny sure is a cutie pie huh?
Anne, can you play, Maggie May, my favorite Mandolin song sometime on one of your videos? That would make an old man smile. I've made a few windsors, enough to know it's no easier to make a small one than a life size. Your looks perfect, beautiful job! Glad you guys got to get together and have some fun. Your laugh is infectious.
I'll look it up Lee!
Anne of All Trades ....Rod Stewart
Anne thanks so much for sharing your story with us, your video quality surpasses all others. So glade you had time to spend time with April. Your music playing is so fitting for this video.
Thanks so much! I'm glad too. Some peace before the chaos!
Awesome video Anne. The chair turned out fantastic! In my opinion if you can't take the time to learn and enjoy yourself, then there's no sense in doing anything meaningful other than the basic necessities.
Keep the great videos coming.
Thanks for sharing and God bless
I wholeheartedly agree! Blessings your way as well!
If you turn April into hand woodworker... you really deserve "All Trades" in your name :))) Chairs that small are not useles! My nephew 3 years old is fitting in! Im sure you will feel some kid that would feel special sitting in that chair! :)
Haha turning April into a handtool woodworker would definitely be a feat.
Hello Anne. I have been following April Wilkerson for awhile now and love her projects and videos. I starting following you after she introduced me to on her video re: The same class. This is the first video I have watched of yours and it was amazingly wonderful. I am looking forward to seeing more. It's not about what you make. It's about how you make it.
Thanks so much! I totally agree!
What an amazing spirit you have. Not afraid to live your dream and love life.
Thank you! I am very thankful I get to do what I love.
Looks like SO much fun! Great little chair. Well done.
Thank you!
Amazing you guys (ladies) did an amazing video. Amazing I also watch April's UA-cam, that was fun..
Wonderful seeing the rest of the story, with many more details, more real time action and tomfoolery, love the background music, quite enjoyable, love the bloobers at the end too, a fantastic video, thanks
So glad you enjoyed it Tony!
Very Cool. You'll love being able to hang with Gregg more. Welcome to.the East Coast.
Thank you!
You may have had too much fun making this chair and this video. 😀 My parents always bought tiny chairs for my kids when they were little. Still holding on to them even though two of the kids are in college now. Thanks for sharing your experience!
Definitely too much fun! What a fun memory. That's a great tradition!
Excellent video. What a great experience. Sounds like Nashville is the right next step!
Thank you! I truly believe it is!
the variety of the hand tools and the steps in crafting various things you share your time using inspires me that maybe i'd give some of them a try. thanks.
That is definitely a huge goal of mine in sharing the things I do!! Thanks for taking the time to watch.
Totally awesome, totally blessed!
Thank you!
That chair looks AWESOME!!!! Really nicely done 👍
Thank you!
Great picking and grinning along with awesome woodworking
Thanks so much!
Your passion for everything you do - from music to woodworking - is so infectious. After watching your Dutch Tool Chest videos I just want to get out there - sell my power tools and buy a bunch of planes, saws, and chisels!
Love the bloops!
Everyone needs a good bloop every now and then!
This was the coolest video I’ve ever seen 😊
Wish you were in Sumner County! That would be rad. 💕💕💕
Nice. Wonderful friends!!!!!
They are the best!
I like hearing you playing. Maked me smile and my hart get lifted.
Thanks.
Great video Anne! Thank you for sharing it with us.👌👍😎JP
Thanks JP!
Your very welcome Anne! Have a wonderful week!😎
That’s very awesome. Looks like a blast.
Thank you! It was!
Hiya smiller!
Your skills continue to grow and amaze me! After 40 years in the trade there's little I can tell you, possibly it's the other way around!
One thing....to clean the inside of a wood burner glass 00:40 instead of liquids and a cloth, use one of those cheap Stanley plastic scrapers that take a Stanley blade. It peels off in sheets and is soooo satisfying and quick.
Good luck with the move, thank you for all the entertainment, long may it continue.
Thanks Graham! Ashes and newspaper also work, as does lighting a nice hot fire!
@@AnneofAllTrades ;-)
I just watched a documentary on Seattle, I completely understand your move.
What an awesome place and the lines on those chairs are to say the least beautiful. Really enjoyed the jam session, that guitar sounds very much like my S6.
Thank you!
Good grief, wonderful stuff!
Thank you!
Nice project! Loved the outtakes at the end! Pure joy👍✌️😊🙏🏼
Thank you! There were some fun chuckles in this one for sure!
Every once in awhile a star falls from the heavens for the whole world to see for you are a star live life to its fullest you only have one.
Thank you! Living life to it's fullest is my main goal!
Anne, good to see another of your videos. Whether in Seattle or Tennessee, it is truly a blessing to see you work and enjoying your craft. Can't wait for the next one.
Thank you! I put out videos every week, so if you haven’t already, be sure to subscribe and turn on notifications!
What a great story. Thank you for sharing. Wonderful video ... great shots, superb editing. Loved the music as well. The outtakes are nice to show how much work goes into a "short" video. Thanks for sharing
Now your dreams are running ... go chase them.
Thanks so much, I really appreciate it! Justin makes truly wonderful videos. And yes, SO many outtakes in a relatively short video.
What an incredible video and I can only imagine an even better week! It looks like a week with friends and moving closer to some others is going to be an incredible journey! Thank You so much for sharing and taking us along with you. Just LOVE those chairs...

Thanks so much Michael! You're more than welcome to come stay with us in Nashville if you take a class with Greg.
That would be awesome!! I might have to take you up on that 😁
Videos like this inspire me to pursue a path that I know will make my heart happy. Much warmth from this video. Very nice !
That makes me really happy to hear, that is the whole goal of my channel!
Your version of the Windsor chair is too cute. I've been binging a few very popular filmmaker/UA-cam accounts from Canada and their American friends for the past few weeks so I appreciate the added production value. Noticed it immediately during that intro. Hire him!
Thanks! I will whenever I can!
A chair that size was built for me by a locally famous craftsman for my todler years. I love to offer it to little ones who visit. It is now 65 years old and never needed an adjustment or refinishing.
That is so special!
Not completely pointless. Kids really enjoy having furniture in their scale.
Amazed by you
so cool!!
What a wonderful experience! You are so multi-talented! Beautiful work!
Thank you!
Great video. I’m so glad y’all made this work and got together for some friend time. It’s great to take a break from time to time.
Absolutely! It was such a great time.
As always Anne I love your videos
Thank you! So glad to hear it!
Beautiful as always and a beautiful project. A hug from Brazil!
Thank you!
Amazing video to look back on with your friends later in life reminding you of great memories! Oh, to have been a fly on those walls. lol I can only imagine the jokes and shenanigans that took place! A truly lovely group of wonderful ladies and talented woodworkers! I hope April enjoyed her first big project with hand tools and I'm sure she excelled at it as she does with most things. I'm glad that you got some downtime before the big move to unwind, and I hope that you get some more after the move to relieve all that stress! The tiny chair is a great addition for the cats to sit on while watching you make more projects. Cheers!
Thanks Bob! It was so special! There will be lots of time at Greg's after things get settled at our new place.
Thanks for sharing your experience Anne. That seems so relaxing. I'm from Toronto but visiting Nashville is on my bucket list! Scott
You absolutely should! It's a magical place!
A beautiful piece of work. That looked like a lot of fun. I really enjoyed the mandolin playing. It's an instrument I enjoy hearing played well, and I'm a big fan of Chris Thile and the rowdies he plays with!
My family had a tiny Windsor chair like that, though not a rocker. It belonged to my Grandmother, who was born in 1898, but I never found out where it came from. She had a doll that was big enough to sit in it, so it could have been meant for that, though I suspect it was an apprentices demo piece re-purposed. When I was very small I used to sit in it! Where it is now I don't know, but I will ask around and if I find it I will post a photo.
What a special memory! That's wonderful.
Great video. Love every bit of it ❤️❤️❤️!!!
Thank you so much!
Wow! I've repaired a lot of old chairs. Made my own. But the most delicate construction material I use is 2X2s. Usually I use two by fours. I admire what you do
Thank you! chairmaking is a very fun thing.
This was AMAZING! What a wonderful special week and an awesome project!
Thank you! It sure was fun.
All amazing, love the chair too, great work ladies
