In this very cool, yet simple woodworking project video, I am going to show you how to carve a wooden spoon. From wood selection, to the tools that I use, I will share with you my start to finish process of carving a wooden spoon.

"i want to see if its a little happier being carved this direction" .. the bob ross of spoon carving! :P
Hahaha
@@AnneofAllTrades very nice work can't beat ole fashioned whittling greetings from UK London 🐺🐾👍❤
Buzz lightyear scene snippet was hilarious!! Thanks for sharing all your knowledge on spoon carving, much appreciated!
I have watched dozens of tutorials on spoon carving and so far, yours are the most detailed. I have learned so much from watching your videos. Keep it up and thank you!
It is so nice to see young people practicing ancient skills. Look Forward to more of your tutorials.
Thank you so much for honoring the wood! This is really the first spoon tutorial I've watched that encourages the carver to listen to the wood rather than just force it into compliance. Now to sharpen all my tools!
I just started making my own spatulas and spoons. Your explanations for the grain made a lot of sense and cleared up what I was doing wrong, I’m exited to try again tmr. Great vid keep up the good work 👍
Used a Stanley spoke shave for many moons. Had to re-profile my blade d/t a nail in a skid. Still here. Still cuts. Respect Annie. Absolute respect.
You are an excellent teacher. Your explanations are easy to understand. Nice video.
I'm so glad to hear that! Thank you!
Not overdoing the finish as the spoon has stirring times ahead. Well said. Balance between a showpiece and an implement. And now I'm hungry.
Yeah, I certainly left inspired to do more with my own hands. Thank you, and great job!
I decided I want to get into wood carving and this is the first video I watched. Thanks for the great instruction.
Skillfully done and an amusing application of Buzz Lightyear. When I teach wood turning, I recommend using all common senses except taste. In this case, the carving sound tells a story about the wood, grain and the cutting edges even though it is behind the narration and music.
Enjoying all the different carving options , that you present Anne !! Well done 😎👍
Great job on the wooden spoon Anne! Thank you for sharing the video with us.👌👍😎JP
I'm new to spoon carving and I've watched a lot of videos, I now have my favorite stop for instruction! You're awesome! Thanks for the perfect play by play!
Well that makes my heart sing! So glad to hear it was helpful!
Great video. Always interesting to see a differing approach to spoon carving.
Carving hard maple dry! I'm Highly impressed! Tough Task there! Good Job!👍👍
Very nice looking spoon, I agree the hardest part of spoon carving (from my limited experience) is in the transitions where the grain changes direction so often. I really liked how you explained the way to deal with these problematic areas, thanks for sharing!🙌
So glad you enjoyed it!!
Really enjoyed your video on spoon carving. Great for a beginner like me.
Great video I just started spoon carving and loved the tutorial about grain direction. Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Great teaching and safety video, thanks for sharing. Love your channel.
Thank you so much! Glad to hear it!
Great video. I've been bodging for abiut 5 years now and the favourite finish I've found is just burnishing the spoons with a collection of differently shaped pebbles from the beach. Works really well with Ash keeps the wood a lovely white colour .
Oh interesting!!
Thank you for sharing your zest/quest for knowledge, my warm and fuzzy go to vids!!!
Thank you! So glad to hear that!
What a fantastic video...and your vibe is top notch to boot. Just started spoon carving 3 days ago and I'm so excited. Its not just enjoyable but helps with my PTSD. Keeps my mind, body and creativity going. Your video was absokutkey inspiring and I truly learned a ton. Thanks so much. Subscriber now!!
Thanks so much for the encouragement! I have so many friends with PTSD who have taken up working with their hands and have seen so much improvement. It feels good to get our bodies moving, our minds occupied, and have a tangible result from our labor! Keep carving, reach out if you ever have questions!
Awesome job Anne, and thanks for the lesson, the spoon came out nice! 😃👌🏻🥄👍🏻🎁🎂🎈🎉👊🏻
Thanks Fred!
Thank you! I learned a lot from your video. I’m in the process of carving my 1st spoon. Your work space really inspired me too! 😁
Wonderful!
Superb tutorial, beautiful work, and that vise... oh me, oh my.
Just subscribed. Can't wait to watch more!
Love the explanations on the grain.
I remember 4 spoons.
Stirring
Tasting
Swatting
And the medicine dose spoon which looked like the others but seemed to hold a pint of castor oil.
Ha! I remember all those as well
Just liberated a nice log of sweet gum wood from the forest in my backyard can’t wait to find the spoon inside it!
Thank you so much for this video. It is so informative and helpful!
Awesome spoon there Anne. nice knife techniques. now all you need is some kolrosing on the spoon. One tool you can make yourself is a carving apron--piece of wood on a rope to hang around your neck so it covers your sternum when you are carving at yourself. and keeps the spoon from digging into you. some of these are slightly cupped so it traps the work to the center. thanks as always for sharing your wonderful work with us all.
You make a great teacher in wood working, you are awesome 😎. Thanks for sharing
Thank you!
Hi Anne very good video on using hand tools and using them safely. I have several spoke shaves. All my carving tools belonged to my grandfather, they are English Sheffield steel they hold an edge well. When I use them they always remind me of my dear old grandpar using them. Carving is skill and a whole lot of patience. Well done Anne.
Ashleigh 💖
I'm so glad you have your grandfather's tools, that is so special.
Great job, thanks for sharing your skills and knowledge.
My pleasure!
Excellent instruction on spoon carving and really good video showing close ups of your techniques! I really like that guitar makers vise, very cool :)
Thank you so much!
Well you just inspired me to try my hand at making a spoon. Thank you for a great video.
Yeehaw! Best of luck!
Thanks for showing your carving techniques.
Thanks for watching!
Greatest vid on the web hands down !!!!!!!!!
Great job Anne love your instruction.

I LOVE YOU SOO MUCH SQUARESPACE
Te felicito .. Me facina ver trabajar la herramientas trabajar con madera es algo muy bello creo q siempre la madera y el metal seran siempre lo mejor .un gran saludo y cuidate de Argentina
Whayhay! Someone else who prefers gouges to hook knives for the bowl. I have hook/spoon knives, but I also have Swiss gouges and I find they are sooo much nicer for shaping the bowl.
Each to their own.
Really enjoyed your video! Just made a shave horse and now a spoon also!
Great video Anne, thank you!
great teaching. super fun to watch!
Awesome tutorial 👌🏼
Very nice tutorial. It covered things others don't at all.
Glad you found it helpful!
I follow you on IG and didn't know you had a UA-cam channel here but looked up spoon carving and clicked the first video and there you are!
Haha oh shoot I need to be better about talking about my UA-cam vids on Instagram if that’s the case 😬🤣
Beautiful work
Great video…thank you!
Such a beautiful work of art.... the spoon looks amazing too 🤣
great video! I've been wanting to get into spoon carving
That was a great video!! Thanks so much for sharing that.
So glad you liked it!
ANNE, nice job making the spoon.
Thank you!
Very detailed guide 👍 very cool spoon 😊
Glad you enjoyed it!
That was a knee slapper. Great video, seriously. I have been waiting for a dry wood carving tutorial for us non-greenies in the plains. :)
So glad you enjoyed it!
Back to the classics. I dig it.
:)
So many GREAT IDEAS AND GREAT TIPS!!
So glad you found it helpful!
Wonderful instruction, thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
A handmade, wooden spoon used to be my FAVORITE wedding present; no kidding. 20 years down the line, when toasters, mixers, and silverware is broken and lost, that old spoon will still be in the kitchen sliding drawer, accompanied by a "wonder where he is now?" cheers...rr Normandy, France
I totally agree! I love thinking about my spoons and the many kitchens they live in, the meals they help prepare, and the people that gather to eat them.
Good advice regarding the grain, thank you.
Twenty-five years as a blacksmith taught me that the more you work with a straight back, your head directly above your feet, the longer your back will last, and the less pain you´ll suffer when you´re 71, like me. It is so easy to maintain an uncomfortable position - ( ¨ just ´til I get this bit done ¨ ) but that leads to a working lifetime of discomfort.
Here in Spain we put a finished spoon in the oven, with olive oil -- the hot wood really sucks it in and gives a lovely finish.
Thanks again for an excellent video.
Next time you refinish your spoon you may want to use a different kind of oil, olive oil goes rancid after a while, so I prefer to use nut oil or salad oils that have a longer shelf life.
@@AnneofAllTrades I´ve used olive oil for many years, on my motorcycling leathers, gloves, boots etc, never had any problems with it going rancid, I believe it has some anti-biotic properties. Also with spoons the heating process seems to render it inert. If it shows any signs of making my spoons rancid I´ll take your advice, but it would definitely be a first.
Have you actually tried it, or are you passing on what you´ve heard ?
@@kerryburns6041 I tried it, and I couldn’t use the spoon again once it had turned because it had gotten into the pores of the wood, and that particular flavor is especially gross to me, but is probably subtle enough most people wouldn’t notice.
Thanks, love how you went with dry wood, as you are right, I personally find it hard to get wet wood or finish carving before it's all dried out.
Loved the video. It was informative and entertaining both.
New video suggestion: I would like to see you play some of the other instruments you mentioned. Especially the violin.
@Anne of All trades. Channels on the net that are dedicated to trades are generaly quite bad at greenwood working. Obviously, it is not your case. You own the tools and know how to used them. Good work to get the attention on this wonderful hobby.
Great spoon Anne, great teacher too!...Bruce
Thanks so much!
I've just discovered my new favourite person! Subscribed 1000%
Yeehaw! Welcome!
Anne, I’m a new subscriber and enjoy your videos, which are both informative but easy to understand and appreciate due to your style of presentation. Looking forward to your future videos.
Thanks so much!
Great job, but more than that, fantastic instructional style.
Thank you so much Shawn!
Often making comments on what and why you are making a cut is great.
Another great video.
I'm excited again to do some more spoons!
Go for it!
Very enjoyable and therapeutic to watch... and educational 😊
And wow... 20 minutes 😳😍 I wish I wasn't so easily distracted by my phone 😂
Haha I struggle with that too, often it helps to just put the phone in another room when work needs to get done!
"Now, there seems to be no sign of intelligent life"
😂😂bwahahahahahahaha😂😂
Lost my s#!t on that one, cracked me up!
Nice tut and carve by the way. 👍🏽
I might try to do one this winter 👍🏻
Great job. I like that you are using hand tools instead of electric power tools.
I'm a big fan of hand tools ;)
OMG I never thought to use a spokeshave to carve a spoon! You are a genius!!! Thanks 🙏🏻 😊
It definitely makes some things easier :)
@@AnneofAllTrades Anne - What kind of spokeshave are you using? And is it flat, curved, or concave? Thanks!
alexandradeahl I can’t remember if it’s a lie Nielsen or lee valley in this video, I have and use both fairly interchangeably. I prefer a curved bottom shave.
@@AnneofAllTrades Thanks for the info!
In case anyone is looking for the vice, it's listed at Woodcraft as a Patternmaker's vice.
WONDERFUL
thank you :)
Nice tutorial. Have an amazing Sunday, Andreas 🇸🇪
Cheers!
How are you so cool and creative? It's so inspiring! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. 🙌
I'm glad to know you're leaving my videos with a little inspiration of your own! Thanks for watching.
Great! Greetings from Argentina.
I may have to resort to making a bunch of utensils like this soon. During our move to the new house it seems we have somehow misplaced all of our silverware and kitchen utensils. Makes cooking and eating a bit interesting to say the least. Plastic forks and spoons are saving us for now, but need to do something soon. haha Great video and I love how informative and easy to understand your content is!
Ha! Stuff has a funny way of disappearing in a move! Carve some spoons! It will be a fun challenge :)
Such an inspiration, thank you
You are so welcome!
Challenged, inspired and excited. Great closer for all teachers
Thank you!
Very well done. I haven't carved any spoons yet, but my wife wants me to so it will be a thing. :) I make archtop guitars which take a lot of carving so have the tools to do so other than the very expensive scorp. I have tools that will do the same thing. Really enjoyed your video.
Thank you! Let me know how your carving goes!
Would love to see a video of a bunch of the spoons you have made just to grab ideas from!
There's a whole series on them, check out the spoons playlist.
Just found your channel. Great video and I did hit the subscribe button. Love your work.
Thanks so much!
Super Video Anne und einen Abo
Great looking spoon
Thank you!
Ha the buzz lightyear part earned a like from me.
Excellent video! Too the tool list add a spoke shave and guitar vise, HA, My wife may want to have words with you, LOL.
Hahaha well send her my way I’ll share some sympathy ;)
I just subscribed based solely on the intro montage.
Great video Anne on both technique and safety. Have you done a video of making a spoon from green wood? I think it would be cool to see your process of going from a relatively fresh cut tree or limb fully through to the finished spoon. Love your channel.
The green carving and toolkit videos will be coming out shortly :)
I had the general idea how to and made one myself with and axe a knife and chisel. Your tools are beautifel. Good video, great instruction about tool control, carving and safety. Satisfaction and reward of creating something that previously didn't exist, but the investment of the tools is difficult to deal with. Im sad l go to marhalls and buy a wood spoon for 3$.
Haha you earned a thumbs up for not editing out the mistake of saying knees instead of elbows. Not only did you leave it in, you made a joke out of it. More I see, more impressive you are.
Great video!
Another really good video.
Thank you!
@@AnneofAllTrades Keep on making them. I find so much inspiration and I'm inspired to do things around my farm. I have an idea for a foldable gate I want to try.
Hey from this Texas gramma. So helpful. I have wood spoons that the handles are thick and I’m on a mission to thin them down so they fit my crock holder. The spoons are measuring spoons (Amazon). I have always loved how wood feels and smells. But I know where to start. New subscriber.....
So glad to hear it was helpful!
A cool project to see your take on it: saddle pony (leather work “vice”)
Oh! I just use my saw vise for leather stitching!
Good spoon! Nice work!
Thank you!
