Another great helpful video Keith 👍
Great Keith. I've had the Jet for three years now, and haven't had your patience to conduct a proper test. You've proved they work effectively, which will probably prompt me into using it more regularly.
I suffer terrible sinus problems so I'm saving up for one of these,it makes sense thanks for a great video on such an important topic
Great information video Keith, Definitely food for thought! Thanks for sharing 👍
Great video ur a good UA-camr + i am a woodworker and i get inspired by you
Keep up the good work
Very informative, I’ve been looking at these for my workshop, the pictures on the websites give me the impression that they are quite big units, but after seeing yours it’s a lot smaller than I thought, obviously in this case size doesn’t matter, when funds allow this will be my next purchase. Thanks for showing.
Nice review Keith, very well presented 👍🏻
Thanks Keith- I’m looking at the Record Power one for 100m3 plus space... thanks for highlighting stacks of helpful information 👌🏼😁
Thanks for the video.
well done great test & video
Great video very informative 👍. I work in the air pollution monitoring industry and it's extremely important to filter out PM10's and microns below, especially in enclosed spaces as the human lungs can't remove these particulate sizes efficiently, which over time can lead to long term health issues. I was currently looking at the Rutland's air filter for my workshop.
Great video Keith
Well done mate!
Great test, thank you. I have been surprised about the amount of airborne dust in my shed , even when I have not done any, recent, work in there. Something like this could be ideal.
Excellent video. I enjoyed it. I might have to get myself one of those. I saw the charnwood ones at Makers Central. They are a nice size for a small workshop.
Nice simple review... ty.
Very interesting - thanks!
Good review mate
thanks to open our eyes on that problem.
That has persuaded me. I will get one for the new shop
I thought....maybe he hat a clogged up sanding disc on the second try but watching closely....it was already cleaned for the second sanding minute.
Thanks for the results mate. First time (besides mathias wandel) showed a representative graph for the cleaner. Well done!
Interesting video, would like to have seen the results with your dust collection on as well to see what difference both make together.
Woah, dude - nice work on the graph!! Did you have to type all the figures in manually?? Superb. Brilliant review! 👍🛠🛠👍👌
Thanks Andy! Yes, a return to my data inputting days
Damn it Keith!!! I was about to buy a triton bobin sander but i really need to get this now!!! Ignorance was bliss 😂 Great video... it would be interesting to see the levels with your vac and air filtration on just to see how safe the atmosphere is then...
Good fair and honest review, mate 👍
Just out of curiousity, did you retest the unit after you vacuumed the filter, was it any better than the 16 seconds mark?
Not sure if I commented on this review before but I wanted to thank you for it. Due to your review I knew I wanted air filtration but I was put off this type by your and Peter's review of it. I bought two of the Rutlands ones for £220 delivered. It is way overkill for my garage according to the specs but I would rather clear the air quicker. My ceiling is higher than I can reach so should be space up there. My intention is to have them on opposite walls pointing in different directions to encourage a circular rotation in airflow. They arrived today and I would say are very quiet but have a good air flow. I am yet to see how much dust they gather.
I have the Jet, it's incredibly quiet and has the option to stay on for a number of hours which is great as it cleans the air when I finish up.
As for your WiFi issue, try an App called If This Then That. You can set it up to do all sorts of things and having it turn on something when your phone is near a certain area using GPS should be possible. I used mine to turn on WiFi cameras when I left my home area.
Very nicely done & well presented. Agreed, better to have some filtration than none at all in conjunction with the normal individual machine filtration. You have a new subscriber mate......................... :)
Parabéns brother excelente!!👍😉✌
Nice vid Keith, solid methodology and a good review! 👍👍 I've ordered one - it's not just the size, but the weight of the others that put me off; I don't really want to have 15Kg hanging from ceiling... 😱🤔👍
Great I don’t think you’ll be disappointed 👍 yeah I couldn’t quite believe the weight of the alternatives either!!
I know! And when you see the size of the fan that's inside them you wonder where the weight's coming from! Anyway, very generous of you to offer me a full refund if it doesn't work out, Keith... 😂😂😂👍
Nice review! I've been wanting to get some sort of air filtration system, especially since my workshop is the garage and I have two small kids. At the moment I work with the garage door open and use the shopvac to clean up as best I can. I wonder how well a box fan with an air filter mounted to the back of it compares to these systems you can buy. Probably a lot louder, but maybe just as good at filtering the air?
Hi Keith did you try both ways with the dust collection on this time that would also be interesting ,keep up the reviews and the good work,G.
Great video, but I'm actually interested in the air quality sensor. What exactly is that? DIY or purchased product? Thank you!
Cheers Keith, great review. I was going to ask you a couple of days ago, what your experience has been with the Thor unit.... (i shan't bother now) nice one
It would be interesting to see what the results would be if you were to run the experiment using the air filter, but without the filters in the device. I think that would help determine if it's the filtration aspects of the system, or air circulation (from the exhaust of the device) in the room that affects the readings
About the button, cant you just leave it on forever and control it with a switch on a power cord/extension?
Nice! As always what seems to be a very honest approach, which makes for a very useful review. Have you noticed any reduction in dust collecting on surfaces since installing the air filtration unit?
Yeah I’ve definitely noticed a difference. Not perfect but much better than it was
Glad to see you got one of these. I remember recommending one in a past comment as i have the Microclene equivalent. Mine is hooked up to a fan speed controller which i purchased on eBay from SPUK they’re typically used for hydroponics units. This allows me to turn it down a little when dust is not so bad meaning i have it running all the time in the shop and can hear the radio. I the. Adjust the dial to full when i sand/make a cut. Maybe worth a thought?
Thank you I might check that out
The 65535 number is likely the maximum number the sensor can generate/or the display can show (it's the maximum value a 16bit number can take), so in that version of the experiment the value is probably going much higher, but the unit it clipping it to the maximum it can handle.
This would mean the dust scrubber actually works better than you calculated in the comparison as the non extracted version has a much higher peak that the number you used in the calculation.
This is how to work out how long it takes to filter the same volume of as your workspace. Filter rated at 400 m² per hour , divided by 60 and divided by 60 again gives you a filter rate of 0.111 square metres per second. 40 m² shop , defied 40 by 0.111 and you get 360, which represents the number of seconds , divided by 60 and under ideal circumstances takes six minutes to filter all the air in your shop. Howeverunder real-life conditionthe area is unlikely to circulate evenlyso you might need extra plain fanto help circulate the air. I personally don't like the design of the filter because, the filter media is pressed right up against the guardand you are losing quite a lot of already smallfilter surface area.I enjoy your videos, very interesting stuff.
one test with dust collection running and air filter running?
I advise you to have a go at making your own air filter, starts with finding good quality panel filters and then build around them , using a centrifugal fan . With something well-designed should be up to take out all the dust in the air under five minutes or less.
For this to be most effective, it should be placed on the floor, because the dust goes down. And the air output must be directed up, so the whole volume of air in the room gets circulated.
You could plug the unit into a power strip and place the strip in a convenient location so you can reach the strip switch easily. Just a thought.
Great idea 👍
Hey Keith, This was a great video and full of useful info. As for your app problem, I have an old phone glued to the wall in my shop just on wifi and use that to run music etc. You could run the app on an old phone picked up from ebay and just leave it as the on off button all the time. If you went for an old Android phone you can get them for less than a tenner on ebay etc.
Nice idea! Thank you
Once you have the old phone, I am sure you could think of lots of uses for it and you don't have to worry about locking it. It could be great for controlling music to a bluetooth speaker or a headset and not have to worry about touching the screen with dirty hands. I use them as light switches in my house as all my lights are smart. I use the cheap Ikea bulbs as they are great value for money and they have colour temp control which is great for the workshop. Good Luck.
Excellent!!! Dust is one concern in all of our shops. Im my shop after cleaning there will be some small particles falling down on surfaces after I leave the shop. Will yours now stay clean of those??
It’s certainly made a difference to dust settling
Helpful video. Where did you get the particle counter from?
eBay, there’s some info in he description box of my recent vlog vid
It's been said below but I repeat. I have all my big machines plumbed up to dust/ shaving extraction, with a decent size extractor, that makes a lot of noise, so the extractor is outside, I have one of those remote socket plugs and keep the 'Remote' on a home made key fob, I hook it onto my belt in the morning and it's with me all day. As I start a machine I press the remote button and on comes the extractor. I think it cost me Aust $45, so about £23. well worth it. (three remote sockets)
Won’t work unfortunately because when I turn the unit on and then turn it off at the wall and back on the unit is still off
Smiles... Yes the magnetic switch. I did a bit of jigary pokary and rewired around the switch terminals.
Hello! Can you leave on/off swich on as I would then turn it on from the on-off swich on the extension cord
I think so yes
Now you have had this and the record power unit which would you recommend overall? as I am facing the same decision.
Definitely the larger unit if you have space for it. But Rutland's and Axminster also sell the exact same model as the Record Power just FYI
Hi Keith, it is also available on ebay at £185. Good work mate thanks.
That’s the TF250, smaller model
You can take relative numbers. That way you can combine all the tests all together, since the absolute values don't matter.
Matter of calculating how much the value increased (in percentage) compared to the starting value.
Getting a bit too “maths” for me but I’m sure you’re right 👍
Rag 'n' Bone Brown. Haha. No worries. Nice video as always!
From reading the descriptions, it looks like the remote control is the wifi? The remote one on poolwood says this "This unit is also provided with remote control operated via a smartphone APP compatible with Apple and Android." but the cheaper one does not? Thanks for the review! Very useful...
If you contact Poolewood I think you’ll find that they have both a WiFi and remote option available
Does anyone know where to buy this or similar in North America?
My guess is the reading for the particles in the first test should be higher than 65535, because that is the highest number that can be represented by a 16 bit binary number, a likely limitation in the air quality monitor.
It did seem to dwell there for a while so you’re probably right!
Good information thanks.
Can you tell me the name of the music at the end of the video?
Valerie Plain by Rondo Brothers, it’s a no copyright UA-cam music library track
Rag 'n' Bone Brown thank you so much
You could buy a remotely switched plug adapter with a key fob, smartthings do one.
Won’t work unfortunately because when I turn the unit on and then turn it off at the wall and back on the unit is still off
Anyone know if/where this or similar can be found in the states?. I have a 12'x20' shop with 7' ceilings. Looking for a small unit.
Try contacting the websites I mention they may be able to ship internationally
Hi there,
Just wondering have you still got this machine and how has it preformed for you in the years you have had it or have you upgraded and if so what to.
Cheers dazz
Ended up getting rid of it and getting a larger unit that was less noisey. But it performed well while I had it
@@RagnBoneBrown I am waiting on the smaller version because I don't have the room for a bigger one like the record power ones shall see how it goes.
Thank you
I've got one of these Wi-Fi ones and i just turn it on and off at the plug
Hi Keith why do t you purchase a remote control and socket adapter and leave the filter machine on and just use the remote. £15 from most online stores.
was going to say the same thing. Seems simpler to me..
Great idea but I suspect that the switch won’t stay “on” if switched off at mains if you know what I mean? Maybe I’ll try it though as that’d be great
Great video! Its a shame about the wifi connectivity issue :( but at least you have your cat as your phone lock screen to keep you entertained :) How did you plot those graphs? The particle monitor doesnt look like it has anything for monitoring time please dont tell me you watched those videos back and extracted the time and value like that?!?!
Yep that’s what I did (footage sped up though, not in real time!) graphs were done in Google Sheets
What the number like with dust collect with and without the air filter?
Tony Davies just my thoughts. It would be interesting to know if it's necessary to wear a mask in conjunction with dust collection and air filtration?
Maybe I’ll do a follow up to this with dust collection as it’d be interesting to see
I’d say it depends on what you’re sanding and how long you’re sanding for. I don’t tend to put one on if sanding for a short period of time and both extraction and filter is on. But if I was sanding MDF or a hardwood for a while then I would
Very interesting... while we're on reviews are you any closer to deciding between your Makita and Hitachi power tools?
I’m sticking with Hitachi, decision mainly for the nailers which are superb and also I prefer the impact driver and combi drill. Not sure I’ll ever get around to doing a video as I’ve got so much on at the mo
ah ok, I have the big nailer, do the batteries fit the other power tools?
Good review keith , wondering how come there are replies from 2 days ago when your video is only up !?
The video may have been unlisted and the comments from two days ago could be patreon members.

Keith - with reference to the difficulty of finding the hole (where the switch is) - in my experience putting hair around it always helps.😉 Thanks for the review thought.👍
😮
Wifi & iphone problem: use an old iphone only for on off this turbine... or change the motor for a silent version like this used for wc ventilation...
you should stand in different parts of your shop in videos I thought the background looked cool when u was putting your mask on at 7:27 ,just to change it up many. but great video mate
Hii
Well...got to find this in China now...
I am deeply suspicious of the peak value. In computing, a 16 bit integer with all the bits set gives the number 65535 - I suspect that the unit you have is 16 bit so would never show a value over that regardless of how much dust you generated. Easy to prove either way though :)
Someone else pointed that out and it did dwell there for a little while. I don’t think it affects the results much though
I got triggered by the value ;). In reality I don't think it'd matter. If a value of 65535 represents too many 0.3 micron particles to be safe, then it's still too many even if the device were capable of showing higher values.
"This test is not scientific" - proceeds to run a highly controlled scientific experiment
If I didn't say that in the video I would get comments telling me the tests were not scientific enough. Literally cannot win
@@RagnBoneBrown I 100% meant that as a compliment. Loved the video!
Sounds about as loud as a vacuum cleaner.
Yeah it’s probably a tiny bit quieter but not by much
I am a cheapskate too blow mine out with the airline .
