Great video, agree with all your comments. Now you’ve got me thinking I need to get an Alexa too. It’s a shame there’s not more competition in the small workshop air filtration space. If one of the big names made one they’d surely do well in the UK and Europe...
Cheer’s Keith! In all honesty, I think the little Echo Dots are brilliant, for the money. Bide your time and pick up a cheap one when you can - even the little tinny speaker isn’t bad in the workshop when you position it right - and it’s so useful for cubic/square ft / metre conversions. 👍👍
Hi Peter. Great vid thanks for that. Was thinking of getting one after seeing Keith’s vid a few weeks ago. After watching this think I’ll give it a miss and research an alternative. Thanks again 👍👍
You get nerdier by the day :-) Your conclusion was correct, I bought the Record Power AC400 one from Yandles, it has all the functions you've had to cobble together, it's very quiet, and based on the amout of crap in the filters it works very well.
I’ll take that as a compliment 😆👍 No doubt the record’s a fine machine, but it’s big & heavy. My UA-cam pal Karl Pountney over at StrawByte workshop has one and ran his dB meter over it after seeing my video, and it varied from 52-56dB depending on speed - so not that much different to the one I have, overall... 👍👍
I have an Record Power AC300 set up with Alexa and it's fantastic. Dust extraction Alexa enabled too, as well and some of the lighting. TP-Link I've found to be reliable and integration with IFTTT is pretty handy too.
Hi Peter, I made my own using a greenhouse blower, a couple of boiler filters (300x300) one finer than the other, a 1/2 sheet of the beloved MDF and a tube of silicone. Works a treat made it bout 2/3 years ago still going strong cost @£65. Cheers Steve
The one I got 3 years ago now was @ 450/500 cfm as I recall, cost bout £40. The technical name was ‘Hydroponics in-line vent exhaust blower’ I guess similar if not the same as a duct fan. Ps the filters are 16x16” £10 each, all eBay sourced. MDF & silicone in the workshop already😉
Wow, the noise of that fan would be a real pain, enough to convince me to push that feature higher in the list of 'must haves' when purchasing. As usual Peter good video
Thanks Tim. It’s actually not quite that bad - I was sat right underneath it and the mic was closer to it than I was, but yeah, it ain’t quite as quiet as it could be... 🤕
Hi Peter,i recently bought the Record one and it is a lot quieter and has 3 speeds with remote control and timer, it was £155 and does a great job.👍🏴🥃
Hi Kenny. Karl over at StrawByte Workshop put a dB meter on his Record, and it varied from 52-56dB depending on speed, so actually a little louder than this one at full speed. Also, the follow-on video explains a bit more re the fan noise 👍
I bought the 3 speed Jet version with remote, 5 ish years ago.It does a great job and is much, much,MUCH quieter! That thing sounds like a leaf blower!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😁😁😁😁😁😁
I keep banging the drum for you professionals who are exposed to working so much with sheet type material that you need to protect yourselves more. I was in my workshop for 3 consecutive days recently, btw it’s a 12x8 shed and I have the doors open, it’s noticeable that when I blow my nose stuff is getting up there. That’s working with Beech wood not MDF. I wondered about using a normal extractor fan and a good filter. I did look at the Record unit as its quiet and filters down to quite small particles but ott for such a small space. Great vid 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Mike! My UA-cam pal Karl Pountney over at StrawByte Workshop has the Record and ran his dB meter over it after seeing my vid. It varies between 52-56dB, so not vastly different to the one I have, and significantly bigger and heavier. 🤔👍
I have a small shop similar to you and I have a bathroom extractor fitted it works ok but I am no expert on these things,I put a foam piece over the front 3/4 inch thick and you can see dust on it it also keeps insects out lol hope this helps
Nice video Peter. You can buy that air cleaner from a number of places, I believe Yandles sell it and I have always found them very helpful. It does sound very expensive when you can pick up the Record Power air cleaner for £170, but as you say it is a lot bigger. I'll be interested in some reflections after you have had it a few months. My concern has always been that they are too noisy to run will in the shop working, but by the time I am leaving the shop a lot of the fine dust may have settled and won't be cleared by the air cleaner. Be good to hear your experience over time.
Thanks! Yes, Keith Brown W ruined in his review that it’s available from other sources, but it’s even more pricier from the likes of Yandles & Charnwood. But, yeah, there’ll be a follow-on video in due course - ‘My life-changing 5 months with a fan-can’ or something... 😂👍👍
Reminds me of when I purchased the "best" video player on the market...a Betamax! Had to spend much more than I bargained for... buying a new VHS! LOL WE LIVE AND LEARN!
Will be looking forward to your alternative Peter as I have a small shop and looked at that can and disliked it too. Also not keen to buy one of the Rutlands or Record Power boxes due to their size.
Hi good video. Indoor fixed or transportable appliances don't normally come with a flex longer than 2 metres in the UK. It's mainly only portable or outdoor appliances that do. Suppose it's because it's a better idea to hardwire a socket in. Thanks
Thanks. It’s an air filter specifically designed to be suspended from the highest point in a workshop; supplying it with a 2-metre power chord is ridiculous, IMHO 👍👍
Hi thanks for reply. Yes I agree it's rediculous it didn't come with a longer flex. At least it wasn't attached that would really have been annoying. My point is I work as an electrician and the council and the health and safety really frown upon any fixed flexes longer than 2 meters. Your supposed to put a socket in as part of the fixed electrical installation according to them. Dont think it says anything in the regs though. Thanks.
Thanks Bill! It’s actually not that bad - I was sat right underneath it and the mike was closer to it than I was, but yeah, it ain’t quite as quiet as it could be... 🤕
Not sure if I commented on this review before but I wanted to thank you for it. Due to your review, and Keith's, I knew I wanted air filtration but I was put off this type by your and Keith's review of it. I bought two of the Rutlands ones for £220 delivered. It is way overkill for my garage according to the specs but I would rather clear the air quicker. My ceiling is higher than I can reach so should be space up there. My intention is to have them on opposite walls pointing in different directions to encourage a circular rotation in airflow. They arrived today and I would say are very quiet but have a good air flow. I am yet to see how much dust they gather.
That’s good news. As I think I said in the video, there’s nothing wrong with the fan as such, it was just the overall lacklustre buying experience that put me off. Glad you sorted yourself out with something 👍👍
@@10MinuteWorkshop You both said it was noisy though. Whilst that wouldn't bother me whilst running machines, it would do if I was just pottering about the workshop or assembling parts after having generated dust. Also it is quite expensive. The Rutland ones were only £110 each, which I consider a bargain. Time will tell whether they last.
I think I said it was noisier than I expected - and qualified it with a follow-up video. But yes. A single-speed fan will always be louder than variable speed. Great price on the Rutland fans though! 👍👍
@@10MinuteWorkshop Fair enough you did say that. I guess it is hard to judge noise unless comparing them side by side in person. Even decibel readings are not that useful, as sometimes it's the tone of the sound that makes the difference between a tolerable noise and one that irritates.

By doing so the dirt would be outside and because of the mesh the bag won't collapse. If it's possible to find a salvage vacuum cleaner the normal bagpart could be cut off. So, not a good advertisement for the supplier, but I admire your perseverance with the technology👍👍👍, but will we get a future video on its particle removing performance?
Thanks Bob! TBH Keith Brown at Rag n Bone Brown did a great review with all the air quality tests so I don’t see much benefit in repeating them - not until I have my home-brew version to compare it to, anyway 👍👍😆
For me, the noise of the unit would stop me from wanting to use it so i will have to investigate the noise from other units. Loving the smart stuff. I assume you have internet in your shop to make all this work. I have the google home assistants in the house and shop and find it is very useful. I personally have not found any sensible uses for these remote plugs although I have a few. I have some old Belkin plugs that have a switch on the side for 30 mins, 3 hours and 6 hours as a timer. I use those on all my chargers around the house and a heated airer. Means I don't have to worry about all those power bricks being left on all the time. Look forward to seeing how you get on building your own. Thanks
Thanks Jason. To be fair it sounds worse in the video than in reality, but I could never call it quiet! Hadn’t come across the plugs with side-switches - seems like a great )and obvious) idea. I was quite surprised when I discovered you can’t ask a ‘smart lady’ to ‘turn in the fan for 30 minutes’ as you’d think this would be an obvious need... 👍👍
You make a good point. I have this working but not as a direct result of the tech working. I use IFTTT and Stringify to create routines and then ask the 'lady' to run the routine. Means you can create a routine that turns something on for a set time period and use a single command to run it and forget about it. This might be more work than you are looking for thou.
A quick google says that google can handle this with sleep timers. I am not sure if Amazon have an equivalent command that would do what you need. Basically you would still run two commands but the second is to set a sleep timer to turn something off in 30 mins.
Tried the Alexa connection on my extraction (via will do socket) in my garage workshop but you had to be so close to her for her to hear you over the noise of the vacuum, it made her pretty much useless. Ended up buying a remote control socket which works perfectly. Now I just use Alexa to play radio stations through some speakers.
Bob at I Like To Make Stuff had an alexa controlled finger! using an esp8266, my thinking is for your fan based project it could be controlled maybe with a timer built in. Even Alexas skills does not seem to carry a smart plug timer (based on a quick search)
Wow. I thought my WEN 3410 filter was small! I use it to supplement the Festool and Oneida cyclone systems. Edit: the WEN looks just like the Rutlands model.
I would like an air scrubber to run in the background while I work but was surprised by the ridiculous amount of noise this one makes. I see in the description it's described as 'working quietly in the background', perhaps if the background was a heavy metal concert that would be true!
Yes, I'm afraid I don't recommend this one because of the indifferent customer service from the company, and frankly the noise it makes. If you want one to purr quietly in the background, then the more boxy-looking ones from Record/Jet/Rutlands are probably the ones to go for - just be aware that their physical size can make them awkward to fir into smaller workspaces. 👍
I got a inline switch from WILKOs hanging within arms reach for a couple of pounds,, got my microclene air filter MC 420 from a woodturning show at the Alexandra palace in March 2011 ,it worked fine until last week ,( July 2020 nearly 10 years , 4 sets of filters),, it seems to be stuck, when switching on it lurches but won't spin , on a pension now , can't afford a new one can this be repaired ?? Regards Alf
It’s the least I could do! I was chatting with my Dad over FaceTime at the weekend and whispered (ever so quietly) her name, and blow me the ones my Dad has woke up! 😂😂
Mine does that. Listens to the background chatter and UA-cam but intermittently decides to not listen when I want something mundane like a timer for cooking :D
Great video (as usual) but did I miss you saying that for any device to use “the cloud” in your workshop you’ll need access to the internet (cloud) in your workshop. I.e. a wireless access point/router for Amazon Dot or any cloud device to access the net Presumably you have this in your workshop. I wonder how many other do 🤔
Cheers Graham. And yes, you’ll need some kind of WiFi access to use these WiFi remotes and Alexa - though they’ll apparently run from a phone hot-spot. And edited to add - no, you didn’t miss me referring to it in the video, it’s just that there’s a limit to the amount of spoon-feeding I’m prepared to do, lol 😂 👍
I have had a UK made mc 420 air filter from microcline for years, don’t know wether they’ve changed the recipe recently (mine is cream/brown coloured?) but my fan is very quiet and only draws about 100w, the company even replaced the motor for free even when outside of warranty when the old motor gave up which was amazing! Does a great job of cleaning the air too and all you need to do to clean the filter is give it a bang outside and screw it back in, would definitely recommend especially when compared to the Chinese made ones that are significantly bigger, not as quiet and draw alot more power !
Thanks Dave - that’s the old MicroClene version; not sure what happened with them but that design/model is now made by Thor, the guys I got mine from 👍
I've never had that air filter, but from what I've seen on Keiths channel I'm not a fan. Very expensive for its size and bloody loud. Got the Rutlands filter myself and it works great for its prize.
Hi Peter, I couldn't help but noticing the Katsu trim router box on your table saw in the first few seconds of the video. I own one of these as my first ever router, otherwise I would have never noticed the box being there. Will this be featured in a future 'Festool vs Cheap tool' video (even though the Katsu is a Makita clone)? I certainly hope so as I am very interested in what you think of it.
Wow, cant hide anything from you guys, can I, lol 😂😂👍👍 I bought it to play with as a ‘cheap tool’ option - not as a ‘v Festool’ as it’s not really comparable, but just to see what it can do. And yes, there’ll be a video in due course 👍👍
That fan is waaay too noisey, I couldn't listen to the measuring cup podcast with that racket! By co-incidence I've just got the record power ac400 which was on promo for £159.99 from DM Tools, it comes with a remote, a timer feature and three fan settings and it's pretty quiet even on the highest setting I could still hear the radio in case any of your viewers are interested.
At least you could find the Measuring Cup podcast! More than the lady in the can could do... That’s a good price on the record - wish I had space for it, I really do 👍👍
'Tin foil helmet', eh... Where can one buy such an item? My life is clearly incomplete without one. Another great vid, Peter. I got the wee brother of your fan in a can from ebay and it's fine for my 10' X 12'. However, as Matt says, I may wait until I see what you come up with before upgrading... In any event, it looks like I won't be building a new, bigger workshop until next year - just so you know there's no pressure...! Best aye!
Peter, I'm assuming you have Internet in your workshop. Do you know if this would work off of a hotspot created via your phone & have Alexa connecting to that??
Yes, I do have WiFi in the workshop on an extender from my home network. I’ve never tried setting up an Echo with a hotspot from a phone, but according to Amazon it’s doable, yes 👍
I can confirm this works on ANY wi-fi network, both infrastructure (home router) and hotspot (phone or 4G hotspot device like those made by Huawei and sold by mobile phone networks). I do exactly this with my Kasa Smart Switches and Google's mini 'lady-in-a-doughnut' device. I've set one up on a mini Alexa the same way for a friend to use in his caravan.
Hi Peter...can you or anyone tell me if alexa can hear commands over workshop noises I'm thinking about getting one but can't see how it can work if commands are somewhat drowned out. Thanks
Many comments on this in the comments here - see the one immediately below. I haven’t had any issues, but clearly others have. I guess it all depends on your specific environment- and your expectations, of course. 👍👍
Peter Millard....thanks for reply. I had been reading through the main comments but hadn't gone into the replies....sorry, didn't intend to waste your time by repeating a question.
Thank you for blanking out the word “Alexa”. I have 3 Echo’s dotted around the house and have developed an irrational fear of them being inadvertently triggered..!! The TV adverts make me tense!
Hey Peter! how you doing? it has nothing to do with this video, but I noticed You have a Triton Duo Doweler, have you recorded a video of it? I searched it and no result. Thanks :D
I bought 3 triton dowellers and had to return them all. Maybe they’re better than they used to be, but I certainly don’t own one now, and have no plans for one.
@@10MinuteWorkshop Thats a shame, would be a good alternative to the domino... on the cheap side! Thanks a lot, Peter :D Ah, could I ask you whats your height and the height of your benchs? I´m gonna be building an mft style bench very soon, and cant decide on the height of it. Thanks :D
Hi Peter As usual another entertaining show. Can you not say “Alexa fan on”, and then “Alexa turn the fan off after 30 minutes”? After all she is supposed to be clever.
I went for the remote control plugs that Keith reviewed also, I thought it'd be better rather than shouting ALEXA!!! TURN FAN OFF!! over the noise in the garage!
Peter Millard It probably is. My first thoughts often need some tweaking/simplifying before they become practical. A factor here is that, being a software developer, I don’t see the programming part as complex but it will still need some other electronics and I’m not familiar with those.
Actually you do need to be quite close to the echo for it to hear you over the fan, yes. We have a few echos here and there and they work pretty well - never had a problem with turning them off👍
Haha - it’s actually not that bad - I was sat right underneath it and the mic was closer to it than I was, but yeah, it ain’t quite as quiet as it could be... 🤕
What a weird idea to use an app for something like this. Pretty sure every single woodworker knows using a phone with dirty fingers is a major pita. Maybe it's only for people who never use their fingers to spread glue ... weirdos :p
Looks too small to be of much use, even in a small workshop. I imagine that the specifications of these units are exaggerated. I would rather oversize than undersize. Otherwise you may have a false sense of security. Anyhow, regardless how good your dust collection is, it is always best to wear a mask.
@@10MinuteWorkshop Yes, I have seen Keith's video. It clearly does make a difference and is better than nothing. However, I am still unconvinced that it can clear the air quick enough.

Thanks! AFICT sleep timers will only work with audio content, for some reason. 👍
👍
By the sound of it that fan makes more noise than the power tools you use. Also, good luck on getting a warranty repair by the sound of it.
Haha! To be fair, I was sat right underneath it and the mic was much closer than I was, but yes, it’s not what I’d call quiet 🤫🤔👍
Bob at I Like To Make Stuff had an alexa controlled finger! using an esp8266, my thinking is for your fan based project it could be controlled maybe with a timer built in. Even Alexas skills does not seem to carry a smart plug timer (based on a quick search)
Interesting, thanks Kevin! No, none of the ‘smart ladies in a can’ seem capable of basic timer functions - not yet, anyway. 👍👍
Wow. I thought my WEN 3410 filter was small! I use it to supplement the Festool and Oneida cyclone systems. Edit: the WEN looks just like the Rutlands model.
Nice 👍 Wish I had the space...👍
Regards Alf
THANK YOU for cutting out the name of the lady-in-a-can so my house didn't start talking to me about not having a fan!
Hi Peter, Fan in a can ? Sounds like a jet engine in a can what’s the DBs ? Is it possible to listen to those measuring up guys while it’s on 😁
Haha - see the quick follow-up vid re dB . And yeah, certainly drowns out those guys 😂👍👍
Diy version: big pvc rain tube make in upper half holes and mount a silent ventilator on the bottom and place some filters....
Thanks! Interesting idea, not something I’d have thought of 👍👍
Great video (as usual) but did I miss you saying that for any device to use “the cloud” in your workshop you’ll need access to the internet (cloud) in your workshop. I.e. a wireless access point/router for Amazon Dot or any cloud device to access the net
Presumably you have this in your workshop.
If you have the space, it’s certainly a preferred option 👍
I have a small owrkshop to, but it fits just between the ceiling joists. Thanks for the video
I was also surprised I spotted it actually :). Looking forward to the video!
Best aye!
Thanks Aladstair! Phew, so I’ve got 6 months or so before I need to get the DIY version sorted then... 😂👍👍
Off topic Peter, i know.
When will we have the pleasure of your portable work table build ?
Not to sound flippant Andrew, but when it’s done! Lots on work-wise at the moment, so it won’t be for a few weeks at least 👍👍
Hi Peter will you be saying Alexa, make a floating shelf 400mm x 150mm x75mm in oak with an Osmo finish.
That’ll be the day! 👍👍
Pete....5 months on.....are you still using the Alexa in the workshop? And if so are you having any issues with dust or keeping it clean etc? Thanks
Yep, still using it/her. It’s covered in dust and overspray but gets a wipe over periodically, and just keeps working - no issues at all 👍👍
Peter, I'm assuming you have Internet in your workshop.
Hi thanks for the info would be nice to see in side and the fillers thanks
Not much to see - it’s a can and a fan with filters. I’ll do something when I change the filters 👍👍
Got clean air and hearing damage.
It’s not actually that bad - quick follow-up vid with Db check up soon 👍
I know! I was chatting with my dad this morning and managed to set his off over FaceTime, even though I whispered the ‘magic’ word, lol!
Next "Alexa, actuate the pneumatic table vice!"
Yes! Can’t wait! 😆😆👍👍
Hey Peter! how you doing?
it has nothing to do with this video, but I noticed You have a Triton Duo Doweler, have you recorded a video of it? I searched it and no result.
Thanks :D
I bought 3 triton dowellers and had to return them all. Maybe they’re better than they used to be, but I certainly don’t own one now, and have no plans for one.
@@10MinuteWorkshop Thats a shame, would be a good alternative to the domino... on the cheap side!
Thanks a lot, Peter :D
Ah, could I ask you whats your height and the height of your benchs?
I´m gonna be building an mft style bench very soon, and cant decide on the height of it. Thanks :D
TAKE 2 Just watche'd Izzy Swan, UA-cam air filters v box fan hack , if I can't get mine repaired , l might go down that route,,.Regards Alf
Hi Peter
As usual another entertaining show.
Can you not say “Alexa fan on”, and then “Alexa turn the fan off after 30 minutes”? After all she is supposed to be clever.
Thanks! No, you’d think that would be such an obvious thing, but none of the ‘smart ladies’ seem to be able to manage it, sadly.
I'm surprised the Echo Dot could hear you tell it to turn the fan off with the level of noise the fan was making.
Astonishingly, they work very well in high-noise environments. 👍
I went for the remote control plugs that Keith reviewed also, I thought it'd be better rather than shouting ALEXA!!! TURN FAN OFF!! over the noise in the garage!
😂👍 Fair point - though I can easily reach the switch to shut it off manually, or just lean in close to Alexa 🤔😬
For turning it on/off my first thought went towards an arduino setup...
That sounds unnecessarily complex, but I’m always open to suggestions 👍👍
Peter Millard It probably is. My first thoughts often need some tweaking/simplifying before they become practical. A factor here is that, being a software developer, I don’t see the programming part as complex but it will still need some other electronics and I’m not familiar with those.
Alexa....Spray paint this job and tidy the workshop.......Maybe, in 2020?
Ha! I would pay so much to have that right now! 😆👍👍
So you can get the lady in a can to turn on the fan in the can?
Absolutely. And it almost always works 😆👍👍
@@10MinuteWorkshop what's it like turning the fan back off? I hear the Echo devices have really good microphones but that thing makes quite a noise
Actually you do need to be quite close to the echo for it to hear you over the fan, yes. We have a few echos here and there and they work pretty well - never had a problem with turning them off👍
Peter Millard can you ask the lady in a can to turn it off after x minutes?
From a man in his van perhaps......
From the sounds of that little fan your gonna need some ear protection
for you and that lady in the can
Yep. 👍👍😬
I was surprised Google recognised Popanyining, but fails on more mundane stuff.
I was listening to a measure up podcast today your still mad about that fan in can . Would alexa start the aldi vac
Sure, if it was plugged into an appropriate outlet 👍👍
My Chainsaw makes less noise than your fan, consider ear defenders.
Haha - it’s actually not that bad - I was sat right underneath it and the mic was closer to it than I was, but yeah, it ain’t quite as quiet as it could be... 🤕
its not the quietist unit , can you measure the db level with a phone and let us know? cheers....scratch that, ive just seen the video ;0)
Always ahead of you... 😂👍👍
Check out Keith Brown’s extensive tests of this model - link in the vid description. ‘Small workshop’ is
@@10MinuteWorkshop Yes, I have seen Keith's video. It clearly does make a difference and is better than nothing. However, I am still unconvinced that it can clear the air quick enough.
l'd be surprised if you can't come up with something better than the suspended rock crusher well that's what it sounds like to me and I'm a bit deaf.
Added to an unhappy purchase experiance no thanks.
Think anyone who hears your video gona be put off.
Tellin’ it like it is, that’s me... 👍
