I can never get enough of these videos. Great as always. The arcade version made my jaw drop back in the day, it still looks great now. The Megadrive version played well enough, but there was no way. Also a valiant effort was the Master System. Very impressive considering.
GFII was a jaw-dropping, sprite scaling tour-de-force in the arcades. Loved the oversized cockpit on hydraulics. The home consoles never stood a chance.
You can see why video games and arcades became such a big part of young boys life in the 80s. 7-8 year boys of 1983 were used to seeing older boys playing pacmans and donkey kongs on arcade machines at the local fast food place where they were eating with their parents and by the time they became 12 they were playing games like this, final fight and double dragon and a thousand other amazing games at the arcades.Must have blew their minds.
It’s an impressive port considering the technical limitations of the Megadrive. Some of the details like the level select screen and high score screen look near identical. Of course, the ingame graphics don’t really compare but it’s still quite impressive considering this is base hardware. It would have been a great candidate for the Mega CD’s scaling chip or even the 32X. Considering Batman Returns’ driving stages on the Mega CD the scaler chip could have been awsome for this game.
Burning force is a similar game with a better port. Panorama Cotton was executed way better too. Night striker was a port of an arcade game like this to the japanese Mega CD and it's pretty awful because it's just about the full arcade game but everything is super low resolution
The Sega Genesis version is obviously simpler than arcade one, BUT please guys pay attention in one detail: is the first game I can remember that did perfect scaling (zoom-in) like SNES with no extra hardware. The planet's tunnel entrance and the boss-core-machine. If they worked better in the tunnels surface and put more characters into it, would be perfect due to Genesis VDP limitation. The music is nearly perfect, one of the best ports ever made.
RVCKLVSS RVCKLVSS thanks for stating the obvious... A lot of arcade to consoles at the time had cuts but tried their best to bring home the experience.
You twats even realize how demanding this game is? It's obvious technical part is out of your grasp. This is an ok port but I think the dev could have added little more detail in the levels like Afterburner and Space HArrier 2.
Look man, I love the Sega Genesis like no other. It was the machine that turned me into a diehard gamer. I was a filthy casual and the Genesis in 1989 absolutely blew our minds. Unfortunately, it does not have the power to emulate Y Board Super Scaller arcade cab. Games like Galaxy Force and Super Thunderblade should have never been tried on the 16-bit hardware. Even the mighty Neo Geo would have issues running this game.
This port was never gonna compete with the arcade but it could have been much better. The re-programmers didn't understand the hardware fully and it was put on a small 4 meg cartridge when it should have come out later and been out on 32 meg cartridge. If someone like Success had done it like the did Panorama Cotton we would have had a much better result.
ı dont thinky nothing related to meg catridge size. after burner 2 for example not 32meg and good. the problem of galaxy force 2 its need more space levels than ground flat levels bcouse in first space level its kinda similar looking game.
I think that's actually a raster effect being used since the genesis can't do actual scaling with anything due to the lack of hardware needed. with the right programming techniques genesis games can give the illusion of scaling and Panorama Cotton is a really good example of that.
Space harrier is already running slow on the 32x.... Saturn did GF quite well but also had some slowdown... The PS2 version runs without slowdown, but it was pushed to its limits..!!!! So no way the 32X could have done it :)
ben owen Galaxy Force 2 was actually a Y board game, the next generation step up from the x board,so a Genesis port was impossible. The Y was insanely powerful for it's time.
@Benjamin Jagun I don't think you realize just how close the Y Board and Mega Drive sound chips actually are. Or maybe you didn't when you wrote the comment. If they had done a better job it could've sounded VERY close to the arcade, though obviously there'd have to be some sacrifices especially when it comes to PCM samples.
So slow on Genesis... and most of the time, I'm not getting sense of depth which makes the game absolutely unplayable for me. These games are based on scalings... so, in fact, I believe saying it's a bad port is wrong. The genesis just couldn't do any better.
@@Juanknes I think the Sega CD was alright. It was certainly more important than the 32x. I wish the 32x was never made, it really didn't have much to bring to the table.
At 2:06 min/sec, I had to stop watching. Sega's Y-Board was just too powerful of a sprite generator. Yes, while the Meda Drive/Genesis had one Motorola 68000 at approximately 7.00 MHz, Sega's Y-Board and three. Each running at 12MHz. Plus a plethora of other graphical support chips.
😂 😁it cant even be comperable to arcade. I " hate" Genesis or Sega Megadrive, because it had that annoying robotic sound quality and lacking colours palette 🎨 It was savage caveman comparded to Super Nintendo Snes. Sega was great, but i familiatrized with it in late mid 90`, in Poland. Harder times but some friends already had PS1 so Sega Megardive was obsolete. I mean was great but when you once seen Saturn or PS1 or Pc game, Megadrive was like old annoying piece of old steampunk console

You should do a comparison with the 3DS version!!

All things considered it's not that bad of a port. Obvious things had to be cut but an honorable effort
It is your opinion....but it's just wrong all over :/

"Reprogrammed by CRI"
Ohhhhhhh no... Arcade wins hands down
Graphics are obviously better on arcade, but I really prefer the music on Mega Drive. I want a version that mixes both.
The Genesis port is quite decent just not on par with it's arcade counterpart.
2:04 okay, this is totally some background or sprite scaling being done by the Genesis. Pretty impressive.
Edit: 3:02 OMG THEY DID IT HERE TOO???
I think that's actually a raster effect being used since the genesis can't do actual scaling with anything due to the lack of hardware needed. with the right programming techniques genesis games can give the illusion of scaling and Panorama Cotton is a really good example of that.
Looks like they should have put this on Sega CD or 32 x the Mega drive/Genesis can't keep up.
This was absolutely heartbreaking on the ZX Spectrum
Poor Genesis couldn't do it... the 32X could have like they did with Space Harrier and After Burner though
Actually it could not. X board was pushing 32x pretty much to its limits
Space harrier is already running slow on the 32x....
Saturn did GF quite well but also had some slowdown...
The PS2 version runs without slowdown, but it was pushed to its limits..!!!!

Sega CD had hardware scaling support, It'd look better there. 32X version would be better of course.
A very Ambitious title considering the Megadrive limitations.

GFII was peak arcade scalar goodness. Trying to port it to anything without hardware scaling was always going to be disappointing.
It's not a bad port but the 32x would have been awesome
This would of been good on the Mega CD.
Y boards fake 3D was awesome for the time
I wish to play 3D remake of this.
I like both of them
No chances for Genesis port!
Sega Y Board Main CPU: 3× MC68000 @ 12.5 MHz

NEXT VIDEO: Star Fox vs ??????? xD YOU DECIDE, COMMENT
Star Fox Assault vs Star Fox 0
vs Guardian on cd32 :3
Or Star Fox vs Star Fox 2 :-)
VS Sylpheed on Sega CD.
Que maldade essa comparação!
on arcade this game looks magnifisent. Why they try port it on a such weak hardware like GENESIS? It cant handle it even in theory.
sega should have skipped this idea together with the sega cd and saved up for the 32x wich was underutilized.
Why?
Or just skip the 32x and focus on Saturn

4 megasbits cartrige (0.5 megabytes) 😱😳🤯
ah well… the Mega Drive version is still better than the Commodore 64 port. :O
Obrigado!
Both version ported to the PS2.
At least they tried.
night & day difference!
I wouldn't compare an on rail shooter to a racing game...

Pq?
