    A plug dome (like Lassen) is actually NOT the eroded core of a larger volcano. Rather, it is a complete volcano that forms when highly viscous lava is erupted to the surface. Since this lava is too viscous to flow, it piles up around the vent to form a steep sided volcanic edifice.

    The most recent eruptive activity at Lassen Peak (California) took place in 1914-1917. This eruptive episode began on May 30, 1914, when a small phreatic eruption occurred at a new vent near the summit of the peak. More than 150 explosions of various sizes occurred during the following year.

    • @jeffaiello6646

      Yep...we got this wrong. I was looking back at major eruptions and even though the 1914-17 events weren't considered that by most vulcanologists, they really were and I should have referred to these eruptions in the show. Thank you.

    The Volcanic Senic Byway is gorgeous, but you barely touched on the park itself. Bumpass Hell blows the Sulfur Works out of the water when it comes to geothermal features, and there's a huge area in the Eastern part of the park that is not accessible directly from HWY 89: Juniper Lake, the Devil's Kitchen, Boiling Springs Lake, the painted dunes, the cinder cone, Butte Lake and the Fantastic Lava Beds. Well worth another visit, I think.

    Sorry but Lassen last erupted from 1914-1917 NOT in the 1600’s. Thats basic knowledge to anyone who enters the park. Perhaps do your homework next time.

    • @jeffaiello6646
      @jeffaiello6646 Рік тому

      We did our homework but got stuck on technical terms. The 1914-17 event isn't widely considered a major eruption but after really diving into it, I think it was. You're right, we should have listed this differently.

    Highway 89 does not go "all the way up and over ten thousand foot Lassen Peak" 21:51. Highway 89 goes over a shoulder of Lassen Peak. If you want to get to the top at 10,460 feet you will need to climb about 2000 feet of elevation on a two mile trail. Also, most of this video is not in Lassen Volcanic National Park.

    It's become super crowded now, sadly...was there this summer and sitting in lines of cars on the road through the park at every possible landmark. Cars parked all over the sides of the road because parking lots were full, but it used to be an lesser known gem. Thankfully we were able to do some backcountry backpacking and that helped us remember the way it used to be. :)

  • @cf5914
    @cf5914 Рік тому +1

    So you travel just a little underground and it gets dramatically colder and yet we are meant to believe there is little a molten core powering Lassen itself? Makes sense...
    Or maybe we are just looking at a discarded spoil tip.

    • @jeffaiello6646
      @jeffaiello6646 Рік тому

      The Jot Dean cave still boggles my mind for the reason you just listed. Crazy place.

    • @cf5914
      @cf5914 Рік тому

      @@jeffaiello6646 We should be questioning these things. The deepest anyone has ever dug into the earth is two miles, so how do we know it has a molten core. The metals that they say make up the molten core are no longer ferrous once they reach a molten state, so how could they be creating a magnetic field? How do we know that there are lava tubes? Why are spoil tips undisguisable from volcanoes? They "erupt" in exactly the same way. One "erupted" in Ukraine not so long ago, but it is very difficult to find the footage of that now.

    Actually Lassen last erupted in 1921. It erupted violently in 1915. It is an amazing place to hike. You have to hike to Bumpass Hell bc that is truly another world. But perhaps fact check before you do another. Lassen is an incredible volcanic center and is VERY active, as is Medicine Lake. :/

    Hey, I grew up in Red Bluff, there are a few things I wanted to share. The Subway Cave, was once used as a hiding place for (I think Maidu) however I could be wrong about which tribe. Regardless, it was a tribe lol and they hid inside that cave for months to avoid being massacred by General Custer and his troops. He came to "extinguish" the natives from their land. But they were nowhere to be found. One of my favorite stories told to us by the Forestry guides on a high school field trip.
    I would imagine you could get details from The Lassen forest rangers.
    Also.... Mt Lassen last erupted in 1914- 1917. Blew the top off of Lassen and created Brokeoff Mountain.
    Loved the ice cave...that is a new one for me.. thanks much!
