  • Want an up-close encounter with soaring geysers, boiling hot springs and bubbling mud pots all sitting atop a network of 60 volcanoes, some of them still active? How about all four types of volcanoes found in the world including a colossal one that is expected to blow it’s top again someday? If you’re thinking Yellowstone, you’re not far off. Lassen Volcanic National Park in northern California has the most geothermal activity west of Yellowstone and something the world’s most famous national park does not - the planet’s largest plug dome volcano that scientists thought was dormant until it surprised the world when it erupted about 100 years ago! Witness nature’s explosive power as we climb that still active volcano and explore the park’s geothermal areas including one so dangerous and deadly that one explorer who nearly lost his life there said he’d “been to hell and back.” California’s very own Yellowstone is an explosive adventure you won’t want to miss. Word of caution: The Dixie Fire, the largest in California history, burned through some of the park in 2021 so check the park’s website for trail closures before you go.

My Great Grandfather M.E. Dittmar helped make Lassen Park a National Park

Lassen is one of my favorite places ^^ I haven't been through the Warner Valley area yet, so that was cool to see (though I was under the impression that the area around Drakesbad was hit pretty hard by the Dixie fire in 2018. The parts you showed look fairly green). Next time you're there, you can actually climb the cinder cone near Butte Lake (that might be the one you saw from Lassen Peak). That area of the Park also has the Fantastic Lava Beds and the Painted Dunes. The hike up Cinder Cone is like walking in sand, so it's a bit rough, but you get some gorgeous views from the top. The King's Creek meadow area is also a good stop along the main park Highway. It has gorgeous wildflowers in the Summer and the King's Creek Falls hike is very pretty, too. Lastly, Manzanita Lake is a good spot to spot the resident otter family. They're fun to watch (just be sure to give them their space. They made the news a while back because a lady got to close to their den and got bitten).

Right on! We’d love to get back out there again someday! This visit was from before the Dixie fire, which is why it looks so green.

I also recommend the Cinder Cone near the Butt Lake! Totally blow away by the view at the top. Lassen NP changed my view towards the nature too. I can understand why people like hiking and join the team

This clickbait title is silly. I was born and spent half my life an hour from the east gate of Yellowstone, and spent the other half of my life (including currently) living in the shadow of Lassen itself. Comparing Lassen to Yellowstone may be a cute click bait way to get views, but it is certainly not accurate. Lassen is beautiful, but is a tiny fraction of the size and scope of Yellowstone. This really does a disservice to the awesomeness of Yellowstone.
Put it this way, don't die without visiting Yellowstone, it is a modern wonder of the world. Lassen is cool if you are close already but don't go out of your way to see it.
