- My thoughts on the battery powered MSA 220 C chainsaw from STIHL.
I love that they're making more and more akku chainsaws!
Hope you enjoy this review from FemaleLumberjack aka Felixia Banck ;)
Excellent Review 👌 It's nice to have a professional like you putting out extremely critical and valuable technical information.
Thank you
Excellent review. I bought an MSA200C in 2019 to do quick yard and riding trail (through the woods) maintenance for convenience, though we also have 4 gas chainsaws (Including an MS261 which I agree is about the perfect saw) and a pole saw. The 200's been really convenient and remarkably capable. Since the beginning I wished it had a chain with bigger teeth. Sharpening it is like doing dental work on a chipmunk. From your review including the video demos we decided the MSA220CB with a 14" bar is a must have for us, so it's on order. Arrival date TBD.
Thanks for the excellent objective input to our decision process.
Thanks for the review . I just inquired about one today , looks like this is the right model for me .
I love your videos. No BS and very unbiased and informative.
Thank you
I am not sure if you use a peavey (with stand) or not. But would be good to see your opinion on them.
I bought one of these to prepare wood for my woodlathe. Works great, no warm-up, less noise.
One drawback I found is in the handle. When using the saw without gloves, you can pinch your skin while pressing the throttle.
The chain is great, stays sharp for much longer. I don't miss an on-off switch at all!
I see your point about the lack of an ON/OFF switch but guess most regular battery power tools are also ON when the battery is fitted. However the chain is certainly dangerous and it probably feels more threatening when the saw is ON than most regular power tools. As you say, it does have a brake though and it's something a battery chainsaw owner really needs to use and pay more attention to. Thanks for the review. It's a lovely saw and you presented well.
I have one those the on off suitch is not the problem for me the real problem is that even with best battery your time cut is short.
Good point about no on/off button and always using chain brake when not cutting.
I would like to have one i have been thinking of buying one for small jobs and i can keep it in the truck and wont smell gas fumes. good review. and i like the color of your shirt it really makes you pop.
Thank you
I saw 7 carving projekts in the background. All the best for the next 30K. 👍🇦🇹
Hi! Looks like a great little saw! I see 10 carvings, that is considering the following. There are two on the ducks back that could be a start. And there are two between the birds that could also be a start of something. Pick me!! Keep up the great work.
Thank you for helping me make a decision about our saw purchase!
You’re welcome
I've had the MSA200c for nearly 4 years now, with two AP300s, been a brilliant wee saw. The chain is more of a fiddle to sharpen, but it also cuts the small stuff really well. I disagree about the lack of an off/on button - to me one of the main advantages of an electric saw is just picking it up and using it, without having to press a button and wait for a few seconds. I have the 82v Greenworks saw (I had the batteries for the PCW3000-Li winch) which has more power and a 3/8th chain but it is way less refined and a pain to use because of having to keep switching it on.
Just bought a msa140c to use with a carving bar in log homes building, i use it just for small details and i love it!!
Great review. Thank you for the honest opinions both good and bad. Just ordered this saw and am happy to hear that a pro like you endorses it. Looking forward to putting it to work.
Nice honest review. I think I can see about four little carvings, maybe five? I hope I have a chance to win in the uk! Strong love in the female arb community
Thanks
Did that battery cover come in the box with the saw ? ..i bought a saw but i didnt get that cover in my box
Yes it was in the saw
Thank you for being so informative in your videos. It looks to be a cool little saw 😁👍. I'm very excited finally got my 500i today. I haven't really got a chance to run it yet. 😁👍
I agree that some sort of safety/pilot light would be helpful for when the battery is fully seated and the saw is "ON" though popping the chain brake would remedy any accidental button presses. it wouldn't be an issue though as the very nice double battery retention system thing would let you rest/transport the saw with the battery popped up into the disconnected-but-still-retained-by-the-saw position and the light would be off and the saw would be "safe"
Canada 🇨🇦 Loves Lumberjacks!!
Thanks for the tips...I just purchased this after my 025 Stihl was deemed too costly to repair.
“ home owner like ” that made me laugh 😆! 🇨🇦
Hi I'm Björn from Germany. I congratulate you to the 30k! I follow your Instagram account 1 and a half year, and I really enjoy your posts! This was an very interesting review about the Msa 220c for me. I´ve seen 7 carving projects in the background. I would be proud to win this amazing battery chainsaw! Thanks a lot! Kind regards from Germany, yours Björn
I want i want i want this😍. STIHL is not just a chain saw cutting meshine. It's a legacy and personal pride also.. 💪 i'm proud to be a logger🌲🌳🍁🌲🌳🍁
Great video. I just bought one the other day, it does cut nice!
That’s awesome
My Kobalt battery saw has the same problem- no on/off switch. For safety I "pop" the battery by pushing the thumb lever when I'm not cutting. This prevents the saw from starting but also means the battery can fall out.
Great and detailed review as always, keep coming :)
Thank you
According to Stihl, the MSA-220C is rated at 1.8 kilowatts with an AP100 or AP200 battery and 2.1 kW with an AP300. Only one other battery chainsaw that's this light (5 to 5.5 kg) provides comparable power: the Greenworks 40V Gen. 2, a 16-inch saw rated at 1.8 kW of power and 1.6 newton-meters of torque with a 4AH or 5AH battery and probably 1.9 or 2.0 kW with an 8.0AH battery.
Nice saw have used a 200 which was quite good, so that should be better. Four carvings in the back ground? Richard.
Så sejt! Du rocker! 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
I see 3 carving projects, dinosaur, turtle, some kind of head? Nice saw to win and own😉
Does it have a 12V charger to use it in the car/truck ?
Not a Stihl but the Husqvarna T540i XP is a nice top handle saw
Hi. Very informative video weight and torque specifications considering buying three will they work in Sub-Zero weather
Excellent review, as a landscaper I still run mostly petrol saws, Hedge trimmers etc but am really keen to change and integrate these new battery powered tools, they definitely seem to be the way forward. I have a really good local Stihl dealer so a visit to them is a must. Would you say this saw is similar to the 181 in terms of power etc? Thanks again for the helpful videos on the other stuff you review, I tend to watch a few people who post on You tube and it does really help and inform. All the best!
Thank you! The battery product are definitely worth a try :)
I would compare it to a 231.
@@Femalelumberjack Thanks!
Excellent review!! If possible, could you review the Stihl MSA 120, please?
Good review.
My MSA220C runs much better on the AP300S battery than it does on the AP300. With the AP300 it runs, sort of. With the AP300S comes alive, hooks up and makes shavings.
I don't need an "on" light. It would be redundant. The saw has an indicator that it's "on." The battery. If the battery is inserted, it's on. If you pick it up and it's heavy, it's because the battery is in it and it's on. That's as good as a light. Between the excellent chain brake, the button push safety on the trigger and the presence of the battery indicating it's on, I don't really see a safety problem.
Another great review. You mentioned wanting a top handle version, does that mean the MSA 161 T you reviewed is not powerful enough? And what is the Orange and Black knob on the left hand side? (shown at 14:00) Lastly, if you want to clean your saws before doing a video then do it, do not let comments dictate how you make your videos, we all know you actually use your saws and in places most of us would never have the courage to use them, so great job.
The thing at 14:00 is stihl connected. www.stihlusa.com/stihlconnect/
@@thomasvankruijsbergen7639 Thanks mate. Ive never seen them beforr
Glenn Mack I have them on a few saws too.
I bought one if these 2 weeks ago with 2 of the big batteries. From fully charged I got 7 cuts before needing to replace the battery. The wood was probably about 12" diameter and is one of the Aussie hardwoods which can test a saw. Having cost me well over $1400 with the fast charger I admit to being very disappointed with it so far.
A nice chainsaw, i don´t have a problem with the on/off button.
As always I enjoyed your video take care and be careful working
Thanks
Great review and thanks.
You’re welcome
Nice video keep up the good work
Well done young lady. Work safe.
Did you ever get to try the MSA 300. It would be great to know which one you prefer!
Good point about the chain brake!
Hello, Greetings from Chile, does this chainsaw have shock absorbers?
Nice found it young lady!👍
I think it's ideal for those quick start cut shutoff jobs , we all know the worst thing for a saw is those times you cut without warming up the engine
I doubt that's not true.
Ive got one, just another 20% power chain just stops. Do hard woods here mainly in oz. Altho great for when riggin down big limbs for climber, so fast n light to nip stuff up to size to drag out. Yer very handy just bit more power. Husky ones definatley better for now. Thanx
I personally favor the 161T and think it’s the over all best preformed battery saw by stihl, I was really excited about this saw and expected it to be insane but was slightly disappointed…. It’s a really good saw but it runs out of battery fast and doesn’t cut as fast as I was hoping… again it’s a great saw but maybe I had my expectations high from using the 161 so much
You need to do a new review on the 500...!
Hi, just thought you might like to know i have a stihl electric disc cutter for my work and it does have a isolation switch for the battery. Don’t know why stihl haven’t done The same for the chainsaw?! Anyway good vid on the saw, keep it up girl 👍
How’s the price difference in your country to the US i’m surprised They didn’t go with a smaller width in chain no indicator light probably because it’ll drain the battery please look into the chaps with electric motors it will not stop that chain should tell you in manual
I wonder if they make a full skip chain for this i feel like that would possibly help with chain speed and battery life. I know it helped my 261c-m
Can you cut some cookies compared to a petrol saw in the next video please? Good video. romalec's idea about charging it off a 12v system is a good one or perhaps solar would work, at least in Summer time.
I prefer the top handle chainsaw while I’m in the tree. This is the only raison why I’m not switching for this saw:)
I have the 161T top handle. Shorter but goes full pace almost instantly
Can you use the ap500?
I see about 8 maybe 9 carving projects...2 of them are almost finished (the one up front at you right hand side and the other down on you left hand side) the rest are on the table and also on the top of the wood pile. Greetings from Spain!!!!!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😉😉😉....nice saw to win!!!!
Awesome! What do you think of the weight difference??
Should I wait for the 300?
I would
Hi hello how r u long time no hear you must be busy lady hope all is good with u i love the video keep up good work xx
That saw will also work with the AP300S, like you have, and the battery packs with an adapter. I would like to see that saw in a 20" log with a MS261 cutting cookies with the same bar and chain.
261 would smoke it!
What about a MS170?
It'd be nice if there was a real comparison using the same bar and chain and different popular petrol power heads and the same log. One power head with less power and one with slightly more would make a great video.
🧡🖤 Stihl 🖤🧡
Poulan Wild thing 💚💜💚💜
@@JourneyNorthAK 🤤🤤🤤
I am a husqy fan, but if I win the Stihl I will work with it. 👍🇦🇹
Great review, I never knew a 220 even existed until I saw this video. One question I’ve got is, can you use the battery and charger from the 200 version? I’m not sure if you touched on that or not. Thanks.
All the batteries use the same charger
@@Femalelumberjack Thanks for your reply. I currently own the 200 version, if I wanted to upgrade to this 220 saw can I use the batteries from my 200, or does the 200 and 220 use different batteries... are the batteries interchangeable between the two? Thanks.
Loved the review very helpful
Good vid good saw but dont like that chain adjustment. Thought still had left it. Wish they did.
I'd change the bar, chain and sprocket to a 1/4" mini set up. Less drag on the motor and battery.
Please look into the 200 model.
My msa 220 c is overheating every time I use it ( I have not been able to use a full battery without it giving a code) any suggestions or know of that happening to anyone else?
Is the throttle variable speed or just on and off?
Variable
Seems like a good saw.
We call “aiming lines” felling sights in the states.
Thanks
I See 6 Carving Projects 😁👍
So cool 😎
Thank you very much for the review. I am still surprised at the prices of the battery. Saving 400-ish euro for a battery will get you a Very Long extension cord and make the saw lighter as well. Would it not be true that in most places where you can charge a battery you can also plug in an extension cord? That would save you a few hundred euro, and some of the environment, because Lithium mining is a pain for people and for the planet. I can imagine that climbing trees with a cord is not ideal, but do you not thing that for ground work it would be ideal? You may need some discipline to regularly check your oil, but beside that I think corded is a pretty decent option to save money and weight.
You should prob only use the ap 300s because with the 300 & 200 & 100 the power is limited
Thats what I said in the video ;)
Nice job thank you.
Thank you
The battery makita saws do not have a cog on the bar unlike stihl on there tool less version 🤔
As always nice review, I had the opportunity to try it but a chainsaw that makes no noise can never be a chainsaw!
Love the term home owner like
Sorry I missed you live. Have a lot going on here
Chainsaw wood carvings are great, proper treepeople
Szia szép,és ügyi vagy Tetszik nagyon a videó!😊🐶🐝🌷
I LOVE being a treeple!
It’s the best!!!
If we're treeple, are we going to leave? Dad joke😃.
You forgot to show us the ap100 and ap200 for size comparison
The batteries are the same size they just get heavier
Great job 🔥 My likes lumberjack and arborist 🌲
30k 😍
Hello with 🇺🇦
Like 🙋🏻♀️ 😍 😍 🤗
😍😍😍
it isn't on until you pull trigger
Truth. I have the 160 for 3 years.unless i need a big saw this is my go to saw. awwwsome for small trees and limbing. Batteries still have same cutin and charger time as the day i bought it!
I see 5 carving projects
👍💖
Hi you!!♥♥♥
Yaay
Plase review tes powes msa220...😘😘😘
Did that already
I have the 220 and the 161t and it comparing both the 161t in it's class is much better. The battery last lot less on the 220 and in overall the plastic looks like more a Chinese thing.
Performance depend of whot of battery cells are bild in battery pack there is 18650 and 20700 types of li-ion baterry cells on the market the 20700 have grether performance depend from how many Amp they can give in moment of time for exemple battery 54Ah makita give 54Watt of power in moment 1hour and mouch bigger in shorted time!!!
And we call “bumper spikes” dogs.
👍
For ten-hour operation, you need two batteries (AP 300S) and two chargers - in case you need to recharge them quickly, and that's not little money. The chain is very fragile and you have to be very careful when sharpening it - it is easy to damage the teeth. In addition, it very quickly and easily jams on smaller branches and leaves that are pulled under the chain guard. I've been using this model for a long time and I have mixed feelings about it ... the MSA 161 T is a much better model, but it's also a different scope of work :)
Love u from pakistan
