I had a certain appreciation for the game. Open world with the set up it had was pretty scarce back then. Then, you combine it with some of the desolate yet oddly surreal rubbery content of Toontown mixed with Eddie's more earthly city, and you get this strange wandering experience with Disney slapped onto it. I really liked it and I kind of wish they did more stuff like this back in the day. Also, just randomly smashing some passerby to work off some frustration was glorious.
Early GTA? Maybe.

There's not a toon alive who can resist....
This game has another fantastic soundtrack by David Wise with the Mountains theme probably being my favorite. The fight with Judge Doom can be quite cryptic as to what you are supposed to do. I would classify this as an open world type game which you didn't see too many on the NES.
'How do we convert this movie into a game?' - 'We could always put bats and snakes in it...' - 'Brilliant!'
Bats and snakes were the go-to in the day!

I feel like you’re giving this game more credit than it deserves lol. I liked it back in the day but there’s no way it holds up. I just got the Gameboy game a month ago and I’m pleasantly surprised.

This is probably one of my favourite movies, but I've put off playing the game for a long time. The Game Boy one also looks like it might be worth picking up. Nice work as usual here, NESFriend!

My aunt was living in Hollywood when I was young & I saw this movie (likely after it was out of theatres), so I got to go there a bit, and definitely loved the idea of all my cartoons characters together, have lives outside of work, etc, an idea I also had with Legos (pirates, knights, city, space, you name it), action figures, and I appreciate in kingdom hearts (and smash, which I dont play).
Anyway, great video as always!
I totally forgot about this game until seeing this video.
I played it when I was a little kid but never really 'got' it.
Now that I'm an adult who can appreciate both the film's wacky cartooniness and its somber narrative of a functional alcoholic's struggle to recover from the loss of his brother, perhaps I should give this game another go.
I think you can rapid fire the punch, you've gotta be moving as you're letting the strength build, and then you gotta find a rhythm with the full strength punch while still moving.. it's a nightmare, great review, I had nothing but time on my hands as a kid and I loved this movie

This game always reminded me of Zelda 2 but with less emphasis on combat. I never could beat this

One of my favorite things to do is charge the power meter up and clobber the shit out of people! It's pretty hilarious to hit someone to a thunderous boom and watch them fly like ragdolls lol!
I grew up with this movie, and always loved it, which I think is why the Kingdom Hearts series resonates with me so much.
As for this game, I remember renting it as a kid (my small town movie rental shop had NES games even into the mid~late 90s) and I absolutely could not figure it out. Granted, I was like, five, so... xD
Kinda nervous to show this movie to the kid. And the boot moment isn't the part I'm most afraid of.
I watched it at his age and remember it fondly despite not really having a clue what was happening. And I've been attracted to red heads ever since.

Great review of a misunderstood game. It was probably my love of open world games as a kid that drew me in, but I rented the hell out of this one when it came out. It was my favorite movie at the time, and while I never got very far in it without using passwords, I enjoyed this game quite a bit.
Yeah, same. The freedom of it lured me in even though I hardly got far.
the book is pretty great too. definitely recommend it, especially if you like hardboiled detective fiction.
If you start moving Eddie to the side while building up the punch meter and tap rapidly with the punch button, you can move him around with some freedom and have him hit things at full strength. Makes the fight with Doom a bit easier.

I was always 50/50 on this game.
The NES one is ok, but the Game Boy version is a much better and more intuitive game. The Famicom Roger Rabbit game is a fascinating study in localization. If you aren't aware of that story, look it up.
I'll have to look into it. Fascinating localization stories could be a good video idea if I find more.
@@NESFriend Yes. Between the extra sound hardware of the Famicom disk system that isn't in the NES, sound chips that were left out of NA releases (ala Castlevania 3), and other reskins, like Yo Noid!, you should be able to find some to talk about. I'm also interested in PAL releases and wonder if there are other localization stories concerning these that haven't been explored?

"Loosely Based". Very Loosely.
For example, the characters in the book are not Cartoon Characters but Comic Strip characters. The time setting is the present of the book (1970's).
The only characters from the movie in the book are Eddie, Roger, Jessica, and Baby Herman and are quiet different in general. There's no Judge Doom or anything like the Cloverleaf plot.
The plot bears more resemblance to DOA or Dead Heat than the movie. It's not particularly light, it's more like a lot of the strange 1970's sci-fi and fantasy.
The book is fantastic. One of my all time favorites.
Imagine an Unreal Engine remake of this game, that'd be really fun lol but it would never happen

Such nostalgia for this one from playing it as a kid, but boy it still looks just as difficult and bad. LOL
The game boy version from Capcom was so much better
@ChrisVsRetro yeah. had it as a kid...it's a mix of adventure and puzzles.
Oh, I can't stand this game. It's like it wants to be an item-hunt adventure game, but the devs felt that it needed some action and platforming elements too. It manages to scrounge together the worst aspects of everything. I could see a really good mystery-solving adventure game from this franchise, but this ain't it, chief.
Incidentally, I just finished listening to the audiobook of Who Censored Roger Rabbit. If you ever want a completely different take on the characters, definitely give that a try.
It's a great book!
