What happens when God’s call clashes with our expectations? What hope is there when we choose our own way instead of his? What do we do with the second chances he gives us? What about when his compassion exceeds our convictions or desires?
Far more than the familiar children’s tale we often think of, the book of Jonah draws us into an encounter with the God who is both sovereign and merciful. His mercy is greater than we can comprehend, and extends further than we sometimes like to acknowledge. Because it’s his mercy, not ours; salvation belongs to him, not us. God alone is wise enough, good enough, and powerful enough to extend his mercy according to his sovereign plan. A plan that might sometimes surprise us, but is ultimately the best thing for us, for salvation is found nowhere else.
