Thanks for your comments about the audio! The band were exploring new sounds in this session. As early as soundcheck, it was evident that this was not going to be a run-of-the-mill performance. Adrianne Lenker on guitar and vocals, Buck Meek on guitar and backing vocals, Max Oleartchik on bass, and James Krivchenia on percussion tinkered with everything from their physical arrangements in chairs to the harmonies embedded within songs they've sung many times before. Krivchenia began, mid-song, to frisk noise from the exterior of his puffer jacket; Oleartchik took off his own jacket just before recording to play shirtless; Lenker and Meek continually beckoned one another to adventure new vocalizations - making excited eye contact when a note hit just right. Then, listening to the soundcheck, Lenker's arms raised in disbelief upon hearing the first notes of "Shoulders" played back in this new form. It's her song, she wrote it, but in that moment it seemed as if she'd never heard it before. The result was an ostensibly stripped-down performance that sounded like the album version's distant, reverb-laden relative; inspired not by the band's recorded material but an ever-evolving, ever-shifting future. "Everything is new every day," Lenker explained. "Including our set lists. We work on things as we go like it's a living organism." "We try to keep it dangerous," Meek added.
I love it when songwriters experiment and take risks. These are amazing. The room must have a great sound and their placement in a semi circle must’ve been awesome to hear live right there.
Love hearing this band fearlessly exploring new sounds, and grateful for the Current fearlessly supporting that exploration. The original is great and this rendition is great.
I love how they’re all just so consumed and lost in the moment, making beautiful music together. Love the passion and focus. That’s the best thing about playing music or making it my opinion.. Just being in the moment, creating something more lovely than words could describe.
Can anyone explain the two capos on one guitar thing the lead singer has going on? I LOVE this song, don't get me wrong, but it doesn't seem complicated enough for something so out of the ordinary.
@@thecurrent honestly the chorus doesn't sound bad in this style but the rest is really hard to listen to. I guess that's the thing with experiments is the results can be erratic
Holy reverb batman! Please fix audio. The album version is much better her vocals start to break down and then so do the guitars none of that here just fade out gently. Kinda disappointing
It's quite hard to guess what's the actual temperature in the room. But who cares...stylish and musically impeccable as always
I literally was like...wait so is warm in there or...?
lol!

:) That’s just her style and I adore it and her.. 😊
observational comments like these are my favorite
Sound guy: how much reverb?
Adrianne: yes
Liam Gallagher Not for me man ✊

Of Course!
This comment just made my miserable 2020.

I am inspired! Beautiful
Her voice literally gives me the goosebumps. Such an amazing band. Every word she sings sounds like it was ripped from her heart

Adrianne: it's not the ricochet in the cave
Us: uh, sure sounds like it!
(i love this version)
A moving performance. Better than any unplugged performance I've seen.
Gosh, this was so good.
A really haunting version.

I'm a lover of reverb and I like this version of it. 🖤
Absolutely freaking awesome. Oh I love them.
Glorious!!! the whole dynamic of it ....ty for sharing...as always much love-me
Stunning! Such a special little band.
Some of the comments cracked me up :)
Thanks to The Current from your #1 fan in Ireland. I listen in every day.
I love it!
lovely!
HAHAHAHAHAHHA THIS IS UNBELIEVABLY STUNNING.
Such Glory these beings spill out.
I can hear the agate.
such amazing reverb in this room OMG
This session was absolutely wonderful, real, exciting and lovely.
Her voice is truly special.
Thanks @TheCurrent and @Bigthief for sharing this!!
Beautiful! A unique and special performance indeed. Thanks for creating and sharing this.
Amazing talent..Instant fan machine.
stunning...exploring.....a symphonic/choral atmosphere....beutiful.....softfor a song of such power
This is incredible.
Stylist: what shirt will you wear for the performance?
Max: no.
Seasonal outfits from left to right:

Simplemente woooooooooooooooooow!!!
This is hauntingly beautiful
Wonderful performance!
Grandiosa!!!
This has the exact right amount of reverb. Superb.
gold.
Hmm, much talk of reverb. However, I think that it's a sublime & stunning performance. love it, love Big Thief!
Awesome! Keep experimenting!
🎶
Every video I’ve seen of this band the bassist looks completely different. Pretty sure the next video I click he’ll be bald and wearing a parka.
😩♥️
Tremendous
Everyone talking about the reverb, but no ones talking about the two capos on Adrianne's guitar??
plus she stepping on frets away from the capos haha
First capo (on 4) covers A-D-and G, second capo (on 2) covers E-B-and e
Yeh I’ve not actually seen this before
Nick Mulvey is another artist who does this a bit
Yep she’s the actual first person to have tried 2 different length capos in the history of music. Well done Adrianne. It’ll catch on big time now
This is so funny. Within the first five seconds I was like “ shit this has so much reverb ! “ ...
Then I read the comments
Big Thief + The Current = Heaven :)
Sonic bliss🎉🎉🎉
Does anyone know where I can get a coat/jacket like the one that the drummer has in this? The green one
Can anyone explain the two capos on one guitar thing the lead singer has going on? I LOVE this song, don't get me wrong, but it doesn't seem complicated enough for something so out of the ordinary.
one capo on 3 strings, 2nd capo on other 3. Gives some alt tuning, plus up a whole step.
Kudos to the drummer!!🤩🤣…less is more sometimes!
Alt version!!!
I don’t care less about reverb or not. If it sounds good it’s of no consequence and it sounds fckin good imo
Can't help thinking this song is the ripple which occurs when God touches the Earth.
wro wow
:') I'm not exactly a believer but I love your comment
more reverb please....
Sorry, I feel so dumb, but: what is this song about? About detachment? Depression? Thank you!
Is this the same studio Andrew Bird has recorded in? Looks super familiar.
Yep, we've had Andrew Bird in a couple times. ua-cam.com/video/psNcT_jBiZY/v-deo.html
ahh the old double capo entendre
0:45 when James passes out 🤣
The Muska
cmon dreamy version
Should add some reverb to that
this actually sounds better as a ballad.
They ought to put some reverb on that
Two Capos?
Vocals remind me a lot of Joanna Newsom!!!
lol at the people whining about the reverb
it sounds like shit
well...it is TOO much .. I like reverb .. but they don't need that much ..it is distracting
. I would replace this with same song, new recording.
The National covering this is pure heaven.
thank you for bringing this to my attention
is she fretting behind the capo just to fuck with us?
loved the reverb

Not my favorite version but interesting. I prefer the less subdued version.
REVERB
not
This reverb is ok. It needs to make a "cathedral atmosthere",not to disguise a bad vocal.
Imagine having Adrianne Lenker in your studio and that's how you record her lol
Please see the pinned comment; the band were experimenting with new sounds.
@@thecurrent honestly the chorus doesn't sound bad in this style but the rest is really hard to listen to. I guess that's the thing with experiments is the results can be erratic
Sorry but I like the studio version of this way more. Too much reverb on her voice. Also bro needs to put a shirt on.
She's all cold and the bass player is hot yet they're sitting right next to each other. Somebody failed at the climate control in this studio.
This is L U S H
Why bother?
Liiiiiiiiiiiitle bit of reverb on the vocals, huh? Shame. Great song.
Thanks for your comment! The band were exploring new sounds - see the pinned comment.
? pourquoi cette résonance ? ça gâche la chanson
Great performance spoiled by excessive reverb. Sounds like they're playing in a cave.
The Current, how can you put this online? The recording is terrible! Such a shame for such a good band!

@@thecurrent well I'm not a fan of that then. Maybe include it in the description. The live performance recently done on colbert was much better
