Dobermans and a few other breeds have a bad perception problem. I think they should outlaw breed specific laws or rules and INSTEAD have laws for TRAINING and caring for dogs! Dobermans are wonderful dogs.

    Hey,
My husband and I got a Dobermann because of your videos. My husband is a first time dog owner. I had a few dogs in the laat years but mostly more relaxed dogs. I think your videos were such a good preparation! We took 5 weeks off from work (3 for me 2 for m husband). My husband had so much to learn but know he is even better than me 😂. Our dog is such an amazing Dobermann an we love him so much! Yes he has a lot of energy but as long as you give his brain enough to work on, his behaviour is almost amazing for his age ❤ if you are headstrong enough this breed is amazing and you can get one even as a beginner. To avoid stupid mistakes the are visiting dogschool every Saturday ❤

That’s right, the problem here is the Doberman has intelligence other breads don’t. Doberman’s are quit aware of the owners protection. And have no fear! Now the English Golden is quite smart and can be trained for almost ant sports. The thrill is the kill.

This makes me chuckle because we take our Dobe to a dog park and he is so good with the other dogs and people. It was actually a Golden Retriever that came up to our Jager and started growling and literally going insane! Jager stood his ground, but he backed off and went over to stand with my daughter. The Golden followed him and Jager dismissed him. It could be his age because Jager is only a year old, but the Golden's owner said half of his finger was bitten off by his Golden, therefore he can't be near intact males. My brother's Chesapeake retriever was very mean, so I truly hate to hear that anyone would automatically think a Doberman is high risk just because they are loyal protectors.

My first Doberman was a full breed. Thereafter, I rescued two Dobermans from the Dobie Ranch Rescue in Citrus County, Florida. Recently, the owner of the rescued reported receiving a Doberman because the owners were informed via their insurance, they would not be covered if the kept their dog. Another, could not keep their dog as they were in temporary motel housing and the breed was not accepted. Thank you for your presentation as this is so vital.

She ( Athena ) has been raised with lots of love and support ... Athena never barks or growl at anyone and is always full of energy ... ready to play ... and very loving ...
She has always been loved ,cared for and kept safe ... she has never shown any sign of aggression towards anyone ... not even strangers ...

I had to switch insurance companies when they they put in their policy banning all dogs. Condos and apartments can change rules at anytime leaving you looking for a new place to live. Owning a Doberman I find that you have to defend your dog from other dogs and people since if anything that might happen its the Dobermans fault. I had a jack Russel attack my dog and a kid go after my dog with a stick. The dog owner was yelling at me to keep my dog under control even thou my dog was on a leash and hers were running wild. The parent of the child was just laughing. Dobermans are my favorite breed do to the connection you develop with the dog but with all the health problems Dobermans have and short life span its hard to get another Doberman just to get your heart ripped out. I hope they can get the health issues figured out.

I can relate to everything you've written. I've been " owned" lolol by Dobermans around 20 years now and they will always be my personal choice for a Canine. Did have a couple of other Breeds early on but nothing compared ( for me) to a Doberman. I cannot see my life w/o one/ two! And, I have lost two at an early age - my female (5) from DCM and my male (6) from Lymphoma. Chemo, had given him another year though. I'm thankful now having my male Cisco at age 11 in May and my female, Pandora age 9 in March. He recently was diagnosed with DCM also he's had Arthritis but he's on Rx's ( for both) and has helped - for the time being at least and I am soo thankful for that. Had both of them since they were 8wks old. My Cisco, has lived the longest though and his passing - will hit me a little differently.

John really good vlog today that you posted. I just think that ear cropping and tail docking should be a personal choice to the dog owner if he or she is willing to go through with the process. Personally I think that all of these fanatics should mind their own business and they should worry about their own personal life and not others. Other than that I really enjoy all of your vlogs. Kris I also the cropping of ears and docking of tail should be an owner choice. But as an added detail there should also done by vets. I’ve seen backyard breeders who try doing their own (to cheap to pay ). That usually doesn’t turn out well.

I have had two dobermans and both had the ear cropping. I have never seen mine or anyone's doberman suffer in pain from cropping. Itching is the most bothersome issue other than infection. Your dog won't have an infection if properly taken care of. They don't like the taping at first until they acclimate to it but it doesn't hurt. Same with tail docking.

I can tell you if you love dogs, getting a doberman will ruin that for you... no other dog will feel like they have quite the connection with you as a doberman. I have had two, I miss them as much as one can possibly miss an animal. They both had very unique personalities, they were both naturally loving, naturally protective of me and my significant other, both extremely loyal (except in the presence of cheese, both of them were obsessed with cheese as a snack/treat) and both got along with almost every other dog they were around (unless the other dog was unstable). If you get lucky, you may get one that sits on the couch like people (butt on the couch, front paws on the floor, gets a laugh from everyone who sees it) I am insanely biased but still believe them to be one of, if not the best breed concocted. Doberman planet is correct though, make sure to check your lease/policy/ordinances/laws, having an amazing breed makes folks salty, and difficult on the owners awesomeness.

Glad i found this channel. Lot of good info especially on this specific topic. I have been considering a dog for a long long time and frankly given what you have said here and in the past. The dobers seem to be a perfect fit. Bond to a single person, stoic enough to work with me all day with the occasional potty break yet still be happy to goof off at night with me, no one will want to mess with my truck, minimal shedding (compared to say a gsd), good at adapting to a dynamic situation, and very affectionate.
That being said however, i plan to adopt/reacue an older (2-6) year old dog. And likely a female rather then raiseing a pup in a semi....a pup in a truck has badly adjusted dog written all over it. An older mature dog should in theroy be somewhat easier to help train and adjust to the life style and likely would enjoy the experince since it would be with me more or less 24/7
With that being the case, how would you introduce a dog to a situation with heavy machinery is the norm? And what kind of traits should i look for besides the obvious calmer older dog? And seeing as laws can be an issue is there anything specific i should look out for aside from the obvious insurance/company policy ones?
    Much apprecated!

John, so unfair how the Doberman is treated all just because it was bred to be a protective dog. I’m working on the one fault my 15 mo. Old dog has and it’s jumping on people to greet them her tale is wiggling as fast as it can but the jumping is not under control yet, and long toes can scratch. I tie her up if a visit that I know is coming but her love of people has her at times under a flail of arms or a foot directed at her and people saying beat her butt to get her to understand. I’ve tried to catch her feet which she doesn’t want but to hold her feet isn’t working either. Maybe slowed her down a bit but her button in her head is on meet and greet. Great content love your vids

    • @appaloosatexas3254

Best thing to do: crate the dog if you have visitors (especially not frequent ones) and ask them to ignore the dog. The more she rehearses the behavior, the harder it will be to get rid of it. She needs to learn that visitors are no big deal. With family and friends you could put her on a leash and ask them as well to ignore the dog. She should not be allowed to meet and greet people unless she is calm. Also very helpful is to teach her a place command (on a dog bed in the living room or something) and tie her to a piece of heavy furniture. Every time she gets off, put her back on. Over time she will learn, she has to stay there until released. The goal is, that later you can send her to her place every time someone is coming over. Obviously beating her up is a very bad suggestion (coming from people who don't have any understanding of dog behavior). The only thing this would do, is to destroy the relationship with your dog. But it is not going to teach her anything. Good luck!

“Governor Ron DeSantis signed into law Senate Bill 942, preventing dog breed and weight restrictions in local government and public housing. The bill brings changes to Florida's "Dangerous Dogs" law, prohibiting local governments from declaring a dog dangerous based on its size and weight”
So Florida won’t be much of an issue for some of that starting Oct 1 :)

Random question…what do you feed your doberman? I have a 9month old and he is starting to not finish his food, i started to mix his food with broiled chicken and he works around the kibble (purina pro plan) and just eats the chicken lol. So im thinkn maybe I should switch to something like ollie or farmers dog or even raw. What do you think?

So if you don't live in a city that has banned Dobermans but you visit unknowingly, would you be charged and dog taken away, or just asked to leave? Or are you allow to visit just cant be a resident? Also, I live in the USA and have a Doberman that is cropped/docked.. if I bring my dog to visit my family in Spain, would I be charged for that or is that more of a residents thing as well? if anyone knows anything about that I would love to hear your input, thank you!

The Doberman is a serious animal. The breed is protective NOT aggressive. The instinct is to absorb harm. Only as a last resort will they take the offensive. They have a highly stable temperament plus N excellent intelligence. They will act in self preservation and are highly capable. My Doberman held a down stay with an agressing dog on her. She held command. You can put food in her mouth and she won't eat untill released. Properly handled there is no better dog.

Small question for most, MAJOR for me. Our 2nd Doberman in a row. Last one was like my son of 9 years. Never had this problem w/him and I can’t figure out how to solve it. I’m 67 and have pretty good common sense, I thought. When he drinks water, it runs like a sieve from his chin when he leaves his bowl. Have his water and food bowls elevated (cut holes in the seats of two chairs for bowls). Bought a water bowl that is stainless with a plastic cover with a small hole in center ( like a donut)... hoping that would alleviate some of the dripping.. but did not take care of all of it.

Thanks for these very poignant points!!!
Its getting more bizarre as the pet industry and general mentality is getting so finicky and mindless..
It's our loss as these beautiful doggy personalities are not to be enjoyed and loved as we ought to...
Having said that, I was such a fan of a Dobie girl when I was a kid, but saw her turn into a terror when the milkman came by...of course she was much loved however the family did not have a clue..
So...though I love the breed, I am always iffy of getting a dobie..as that early experience left me a bit jittery...
Also dobes are not too social and I love that. However the general public are so much into happy doggy happy party situations...that these beautiful dogs are not easy to own as dobes and their owners get singled out...

Hello John. In Texas, we have to put up, "Beware: dog may bite" signs with words and a dog image, [(for those ignorant illiterate criminals out there who can't read) seriously 🙄], on our fences just so we cannot get sued IF the criminal goes into our property and gets bit. We protect our Dobie that way FROM criminals with signs with images! Jeez! ☝🏻 John, BTW, speaking of international laws. When my family moved to England, the English put my Dobie in quarantine for SIX MONTHS. We had to go visit her in the Doberman slammer for SIX long☝🏻🤚🏻 months despite her having her rabies vaccines certification papers certified from her veterinarian. It was the worst, John. 🥺 My poor little Dobie. 🇬🇧👎🏻

Because of busybodies number one. Also because idiots who don’t train their dog or train them to be dangerous. This also happens a lot to other banned breeds. Owner being totally irresponsible and ignorant. I have just taken precautions when out with mine. If anyone is coming our way with or without their dogs I just cross the street, just to eliminate any contact. Because you can just be standing there and your dogs at heel and leased you in complete control and some jerk with an uncontrolled dog, especially little ones come by but if their dog causes trouble, it will automatically be dobies fault.
