    That has to be the best BRIEF survey of the differences between the two - and actually shows up many reasons why someone with bigger budget and who doesn't need to cart it about - really ought to go for the original one. Well done.

    The Fantom is a jaw-dropping amassing of technology and features, especially with addition of the EX expansion ($199 US). I was mesmerized when I first saw it and bought one (once I had the money) after it was first released. I am very thankful for my decision. It is so complete. My Fantom 7 well compliments my Korg Kronos 88. Beware, you will regret buying the Fantom-0 series.

The FA07 I found out you can trigger a whole setlist through pads with combinations with both splits and duals but can the Fantom O do the same which should I buy

    An important flaw on all Fantoms is that *only* the V-Pianos have damper and string resonance. The SuperNatural pianos on the older Roland FA and RD-2000 had string and damper resonance, but Roland has apparently not supported this on the Fantom models. So the SuperNatural piano sounds are significantly less realistic than the earlier SuperNatural pianos. This is unfortunate on the big Fantoms, but on the Fantom-0 line, it means that none of the pianos support any string or damper resonance at all. This is unacceptable for a fairly expensive workstation in 2022 and, if piano is important to you, might rule them out altogether.

      @@BrandNewUsername it's not really a classical instrument imo.. it's more of digital keyboard/synthesizing keyboard/sound emulating instrument.. if you wanted classical sound I would personally buy a Yamaha Montage for that.. but there are loads out there.. fantoms have motion shaping tool that you can shape sound with.. particularly reverb.. which yeah makes it better for experimenting with sound..

      Reggae song doesn't need 88 keys. If you love Crazy color (eat the whole keys) continuously playing at Piano, then any Roland Fantom with 88 keys is the way to go to avoid jumping around from lower to up tear on Hammond Skx pro 61.
      The 73 keys seems promising.
      In my opinion, the Hammond build in sounds is Crazy deep, real and better than Roland.
      If you still prefer Roland, this New Roland Fantom O series seems great options for gig because of it's lightweight.
      I used to have Fantom G8 back then.
      Although I really missed it alot, considering the Sounds that is Legend (my Band still missed it too), I have to let it go because it break my back and my car.

      When you download it from Roland Cloud, the EXZ is downloaded in 16-bit linear (Normal size). When you load them onto the Fantom-0, only a small portion of the entire waveform is loaded. So the EXZ size on the flash memory of Fantom is less than the one that you downloaded from Roland Cloud.
      Think about it for a second. How does three Supernatural AP/EP which in total take up more than 300 MB on FANTOM, only occupies 120 MB on Fantom-0? Compression. Roland use FCE-DPCM compression to compress the samples to make more usage out of the 256 MB on Fantom-0.
      Unfortunately, they are not using it for user samples, meaning, the multisample engine is limited by the keyboard sampler's flash memory storage on Fantom-0.

    While this video is appreciated, I think the flip-side to this topic is necessary: What are the features they share in common? As it is, all this does is make one want to buy the flagship model, which clearly why anybody showed up to watch this. People considering the Fantom-0 want to know if it has enough of the good stuff to justify the price. FWIW ... this is not a budget model. That would be the eventual Juno version. $1,500 - $2,000 is not loose change for most musicians. Additionally, if the reviewer is going to ding things like the keyboard action, try to describe what's different about it rather than just making a car reference. This video is a bit of a waste of time because all this information is already available in print form and takes 1/10th the time to get through ...

      @zendobrendo0001 2 роки тому

      Good points. I would like to see a demo showing the difference between the analog filter and the FA series digital filter - do they sound similar and have similar responsiveness? That's the kind of thing I would like to see contrasted.

    • @josephkissel6062
      @josephkissel6062 2 роки тому

      @@zendobrendo0001 As far as contrasts, I think the analog filter is probably one of the biggest actual differences between the two models. No LEDS, no aftertouch, less expansion space ... things like that are kind of obvious as to how they differ. But the analog filter in particular is something I'd watch a whole video on. For starters, it's probably the least discussed feature of the Fantom, with usually just a passing mention to whatever sonic attributes they get from the press materials or what they think is a better sound. I'm assuming you can turn it off, so why hasn't anybody done a comparison to how it sounds with analog filter vs. the other digital filters on board ... While I do think there's potential merit for it being included, I've also owned enough modern and analog vintage synths and effects to know that great sound is possible with any combination of analog/digital or just one or another. In other words, is it really necessary - does it really add anything - or was it just Roland trying to include everything in its flagship to see what resonated with buyers and users? This analog filter actually reminds me alot of the "crossover" section of the JD-Xa synth that supposedly allowed the digital and analog sections to interact. But in a very similar situation to what we're seeing with this analog filter in Fantom, almost no review I've ever read dives into that feature. Even owners when questioned directly, didn't seem to have much to say about it ...

      If you care for less about the hardware specs, the software is the exact same as in the flagship FANTOM. Yes, software, UI/UX matters a lot - if it sucks to the point you dread touching it, that's a sheer waste of money. Sounds are "secondary" - they can be designed, downloaded or purchased but software is the KEY. Features like V-Piano, Analog Circuitry need extra chips to handle and process that only flagship FANTOM has.
      I still love my flagship FANTOM-06 with exhaustive connectivity options. A bit heavy but that is expected!
      Plus the 4 free expansion packs (worth $600) and 1 paid expansion means I have another 5 keyboards built right into FANTOM that I don't have to lug them around separately. And - it is very, very BEAUTIFUL !! I would marry her :)

    Looks like the Fantom 8 is the best deal, actually. It has the best keybed, and it looks and feel the best. The Fantoms are nowhere to be found though at the moment. They all show out of stock in all U.S. dealers. I am worried that I had missed the boat on the Fantom 8, and that its price is going to go up.

      Interesting view on the Fantom 8 keybed. I had an F8 but found the keyboard slow to play, as in, I just could not play it as fast as an acoustic piano. i admit that I have played an acoustic piano most of my life and far far more than any synth so my hands are probably 'biased' now but after all I had read about the F8 keyboard I expected a lot more. I have an F7 now. Again, do not really like it as it is so easy to make an adjacent note sound (probably means I need to improve my technique), but I can play it faster than the F8.

      @@mickandrews9458 Well, I am coming from the Roland A-80/XV-88 and occasionally Yamaha KX88, so to me ,the Fantom 8 keyboard seems okay. A little fancy even, with the wooden treatment and escapement. But to be honest, I had found the RD-2000 and Fantom 8 keybeds a bit strange, with short travel. The Nautilus 88-key version key bed seems as it has a bit longer travel. As far as the key bed speed goes, to me everything is going to be fast, compared to Yamaha KX88. :) I think the KX88 is actually a pretty good keyboard to practice on to develop finger strength. My idea was to get a relatively heavy action, to develop finger strength. My piano teacher approved the A-80 action. Anyway, I only played an acoustic piano maybe 5 times in my life, so perhaps I shouldn't be commenting on weighted keybeds at all. But my point was, that for only $600 difference between Fantom 6 and Fantom 8, the Fantom 8 is a no brainer for me to get. Sadly, Fantoms are nowhere to be found in stock these days. I am worried that the prices are going to go up, because compared with the $5,300 Nord Stage 3, the Fantom 8 is currently a bargain.

      @@dvamateur Another A80 owner! I still have mine. A very very heavy action though (and the whole keyboard is slightly heavier than a Fantom 8). If you can get a Fantom 8 and like the keyboard feel, definitely go for it. It is not a bad action. I am from the UK and they are hard to get here as well. The Fantom 0 series is now out and good value for money, but there are big differences, e.g. no aftertouch (not a big deal to me), far far less memory (this is a big deal), less physical controls, less powerful processing etc. The 08 does have a weighted keyboard so may be an alternative to the original 8.

    • @dvamateur
      @dvamateur 2 роки тому

      @@mickandrews9458 Well, I got used to the A-80's action after all these years. And the A-80's action is lighter than KX88's action. I also have the XV-88, which has a completely different feel, more in line with the Korg Nautilus 88-key version. The RD-2000 and Fantom 8 seem to have a bit of a short key travel compared with the other weighted action instruments. Anyway, maybe that's what the acoustic piano action should be like. I am too low of a socioeconomic class to be familiar with the piano actions. It has always been digital electronic keyboards to me, although I played acoustic pianos on a few occasions, and it wasn't much challenge to me. Still, I feel that the new Roland wooden key actions have a bit of short travel. But hey, people can get used to everything.

      As someone who has always wanted a Kronos but never got one, I finally found a Fantom 8 at my local guitar center that was used. I didn't purchase it, but I played with it for a while. I have always enjoyed the Fantom G, and this new Fantom, although looks very pretty, I don't know.....it still feel dated. I record in a DAW, so I really have no use for the sequencer, and that is a big part of this, as it really is considered a workstation. The acoustic sounds don't sound all that realistic to me. I guess I am used to my gigabyte-sized VSTs samples. Besides the Genos, I don't know if a keyboard, anytime soon, will have great acoustic sounds.
      But yeah, if you haven't had a chance to play one, I would highly recommend trying one out first. The keybed felt nice...a bit heavy actually. I don't know....I just feel like the ball was dropped on theF antom.

    Fantastic summary of the comparative qualities of the two keyboards. Basically, the new 0 series is vastly overpriced. I own a MODX 8, which is around half the price of the Montage 8, yet the MODX is practically a Montage in all but body. Yes, you have to perform more menu diving on the MODX to access some of the features, but that is precisely why the MODX is so cheap by comparison. This sounds to me as if the difference between the Fantom and Fantom 0 is huge. Also, going off subject slightly, Roland has recently released the Juno X, which looks like a really decent synth, with all the bells and whistles a music maker could want. But why, at the price point Roland are charging for this synth did they decide to install it with the same keybed as the Fantom 0, not the keybed on the Fantoms and the Jupiter X? Being as the Jupiter X, particularly, has the better keybed installed, you would imagine Roland would install it on the Juno X. I understand their thinking to a point, keep the cost of the Juno below that of the Jupiter, but the Juno is already light on some functions and processing power available on the Jupiter. It's sequencer, whilst good, isn't as sophisticated as the Jupiter's. The Zen-Core technology has been developed to easily fit into Roland's boards, so it should be a seamless transformation for the Juno without incurring such high costs for what is, effectively, an inferior product. The Juno is a premium priced synth, and thinking about it, so too is the Fantom 0 series. They both should be fitted with better keybeds. You can get a Summit for around the price of a Juno, which has a far greater synthesis capability and a really nice key action to it, too. Roland is a great company, and these products aren't bad, but they must give us more for the money.
    What I suspect has happened is the Fantom series has not sold as well as Roland expected it to, because of the immense cost. Yes, it's a beast, an absolute powerhouse. But how many of us can afford a synth like that? Almost three grand for even the 61 key version. So, they decided to make it up on other models. Put the technology, minus the best bits, into a cheap shell with a cheap keybed, and charge a more affordable (but still expensive) price to tempt buyers. It is all rather disappointing.

    My Yamaha MODX6 shares the same sound and software functionality as the Yamaha flag ship Yamaha montage 6. My MODX 6 is lighter than Roland 0. I have 1GB on my MODX compare to 256MB Roland 0. I still have my old Fantom X6 in excellent condition but I am Yamaha dude.

    Fantom price starting at $3600-$4199 depending on keybed size
    Fantom-0 starting at $1599-2149 depending on Keybed size

    The 256 mb expansion memory is terrible. They offer 15 expansion libraries but a lot of them are in the 100 megabyte range. That would mean you can only load a couple at a time? It would be nice if someone could sell an aftermarket solution. My Korg Kronos has room for a second drive. Such a shame.

    • @ablesam
      @ablesam 2 роки тому

    I never buy a keyboard without aftertouch. I bought my Korg DW8000 in 1987 and it has aftertouch. I believe this is an industry manipulated money maker. There's no reason for a keyboard not to have aftertouch just as there's no reason why an automobile needs to run on petrol. Shame on manufacturers to continue this nonsense.
