since a lot of people are asking, from what ive gathered quick play will randomly assign ports independent of what it visually displays (you can check who got assigned what port by saving the replay)
this is.. genuinely kinda nuts? Like you could almost certainly find high level streamed games that were won or lost due to port priority at a significant amount of majors
This feels like another WhyDo Left Cloud situation. I’m fairly confident this hasn’t affected a significant number of competitive matches, but also, I will never look at a clank in a top level match the same way again.
And sets that were won because they spawned on the left or right (People usually perform their combos better facing right mainly because of the training mode)
If you lost in a tournament and you were affected unfavorably by port, you were probably going to lose regardless of whether it happened or not. Additionally, it's statistically the least likely to happen in a last stock last game scenario where it would have a tangible effect, so it's really just a minor issue.
I have noticed this when the game first came out when watching the top level players. It seemed that a lot of matches came down to jank interactions which happened randomly/inconsistently. This would explain why those random interactions happened
@@GUMMY_MKII thats a skill thing. you might be more consistent in one but you cant say someone would or wouldn't have dropped a combo had they been on the other side. this is significantly more cringe but probably something thats only decided a game once every 10,000
I love this video. At times it was a bit hard to follow visually with quick subtitles changing positions like from 0:08 to 0:16, but aside from that it was super clean. Going the extra mile by showing previous titles is also so sick
I thought it was good. The video is short enough to replay and pause where need be. And since there isn’t any dialogue, you can speed up or slow down the video without affecting the watchability. I might add more subtitles to explain some of the weird interactions that port priority can have. i.e. the differing frame data with fox’s usmash and dark samus’ fsmash.
This is ridiculously easy to follow and understand. You did an amazing job explaining this in a beginner-friendly way and the animations are perferct for visualizing it
This video is SOO well done! Never seen such an easy breakdown of usually complex concepts - I had to reset my password just to be able to comment on it lmao
This Is...... actually very Intriguing. I could swear If there was no clash between two characters I thought that was because there was a difference In weight or power, or something like that that made more sense....... but not this D: (Could even tell that there have been sets and situations that were defined by port priority, It's so dumb :c ) [Also nice format and selection of soundtracks and sfx to showcase this explanation ^_^]
Editing is top-tier, the information is useful and interesting, while being delivered is a concise and understandable manner. Great video! You got a new subscriber here.
I had times where I thought I'd be in advantage after a clank but I wasn't. This explains a lot bc I thought it was either random or inconsistent in some other way.
It felt like a AsumSaus video but only focused on Smash Ultimate. Melee’s Port Priority has been displayed more than any of smash title Ultimate would probably be it’s second place role.
this might be a stupid question but how would this work in online smash since both players in their own perspectives are p1 (also i enjoyed your editing style a lot)
im not entirely sure but based on what someone else said its seemingly random which player is which (if you save a replay then it should accurately display which one you were assigned)
So THIS is why fighting sword characters online can feel so miserable sometimes, proper spacing benefits them twofold. Some moments where your move would have clanked with theirs will just lose the interaction and you die for it.
I don't even play Ultimate anymore, but watched this anyway. Your editing is phenomenal! In tandem with the subject matter being explained well, this was a pleasant watch. Keep it up, boss!
Leaving a comment because these hyper-analytical videos of absurdly niche mechanics in Smash are my life blood and I ever so selfishly want to boost your performance on the nebulous UA-cam algorithm so that you'll be coerced to make more >:)
I wonder what this means for online play where both players are "Port 1" in their view. If this could cause desyncs we would definitely know about it by now, so it's probably just that one player is secretly Port 1 and you won't know until a proper interaction happens!
Greeeeeaaat. Because smash isn't riddled with players who know the game this specifically. Now we have more factors to think about that'll end up being bs to those who don't know and smirky win conditions for those who do
@@bee_hachiI think the game still assigns ports even on elite. Like if you go to spectate, there are ports assigned. It’s also happened to me once that when I saved a replay on elite, my character appeared as P2 for some reason on the thumbnail. So in the end it’s probably random
Makes me wonder, do hurtboxes also have IDs and a priority system like hitboxes do? If so, does the same port priority system apply? Would make this even more significant…
forgot to say earlier but getting a sweet/sourspot that visually looks like it shouldnt have connected can almost always be explained by either intangible body parts or deceptively large/small hurtboxes compared to the model
Yep that’s absolutely a subscribe from me. Excellently explained, insane discovery. I can’t believe I’ve never heard of this considering it’s been present since Melee. Has it ever been documented in any previous games? Also, in Ultimate, is port priority controlled by the port your controller is plugged into (how would this handle wireless?), the number player you are on the Change Controllers and Grips screen, or the number player you are in the character select screen?
its probably been documented at some point but i couldnt find it in any of the commonly used resources for this game (also its based on the player number you see in the character select screen rather than the actual port the controller is in)

As a Ganon main this retroactively explains a lot of confusing interactions, especially with down tilt
Underrated editing style and sound design 👍
Huge news. We need to ban Roy, too complicated for newer players

Play the game again

What is incredible to me is that there are STILL things about Melee we didn't / don't know!!! Amazing research and great video.

WHY.. (goat song)
So basically always try to pick the highest player number
the port you want depends on the character
why is isabelle randomly Nikki lol
i forgot to turn a mod off oopsie
Great video, but the subtitles change too quickly at times
sorry about that
I remember reading somewhere that if you die on the same frame, lower port gets priority.
thats been cut now same frame ends up in sudden death
