Small track, shorter gearing in the Yaris, would help make it abit more agile in this scenario. As well as expecting some HP to be lost if that's a stock Celica without modifications. Despite longer gears and thus slightly slower to spool the turbo, it still did pretty well, and might put up a better fight on a track where it can stretch its legs.
I always thought everyone called it say-ga rally he's the first I've ever heard saying see-ga, it's like Americans with the Toyota they say sell-ica where UK/Irl is said see-lica 😂😂
Video would've been better if they made Plato's voice and the engine sound from the cars as loud as the music lol. But great driving and review from Plato as always. I think a new M4 vs the E63 chassis M6 shootout would be nice.
I have both (lightly modified Gr Yaris Circuit for daily, highly modified ST205 for track) and the Yaris is so short and planted it's unbelievable down twisty A-roads... However the sound of an old school big boosty turbo cannot be beaten!
Surprise surprise, the new, more powerful Yaris with its new turbo, engine and AWD technologies is faster than the 25 year old ST205 😂😂😂 Good video but give the ST205 a remap, new suspension and new tyres and the results would be a hell of a lot closer.
@@jaybarrick117 - yes you’re right. You can’t. But then the newer technology ecu in the Yaris is not the same as what is in the ST205 is it? So yeah, throw an ecu on it such as a Link or (to a lesser extent) Power FC which both can do more than the standard ECU and see where it goes.
@@Chr15py_ No point putting on an aftermarket ECU if you're not building the engine. The 3SGTE is fine upto 300bhp after this forged pistons and bigger injectors are needed for more power. I have the same engine in my MR2 at 400bhp+
@@odin5188 - don’t entirely agree with you. It’s true and not true. My Mr2 turbo originally had 279bhp on standard internals with a LinkG3 ecu and only ran 1.0bar...a smidge more than standard and ran it until I wanted more. It had more capability for monitoring the engine and how it ran and it was bloody quick! Had two years of nice, 1bar fun until I put a mild hybrid on it and decided that new internals would be an idea. In final guise, mine made a nice safe 336bhp. Was it worth adding a Link G3 to my “stock” Rev 3 turbo only to run a little more boost than standard? Absolutely! I didn’t have any intention to build it at the start lol. But anyway this isn’t what this is about. I still think that if you added an aftermarket ecu and had a good mapper program it with sensible boost and parameters, m it would still be closer than it was in this.
Great video, not surprised at the result. I took my Celica GT-Four around Castle Combe many years ago, just happen to have a fun video of that on my UA-cam channel.
Not surprised at all. More power, shorter gearing, smaller faster spooling turbo, faster revving engine, probably a bit lighter frame too. Let's not forget awd system... Great little car for sure, and in proper hands a true track weapon too!
That is the EXACT same colour of my ST205 GT4 I owned (and loved) when I lived in Japan over 10 years ago. Such a lovely car to drive. Much more a GT car though, as I am sure those who have owned/driven them would agree. The 3SGTE is a sensational motor, and really woken up with a dump pipe off the turbo (deleting the enormous primary cat), and a boost controller set to 1.2 bar. The water/air intercooler on these provide much more flow than the equivalent air/air intercoolers on the MR2s. Sadly, the heavy FWD torque split of the AWD system and the tiny clutch that just starts to melt when you try to launch it do take the fun away. But driven briskly at 8/10 they are superb and oh so smooth. I must admit, I do wonder why they run a brand spanking Yaris GR (25 years newer) against a stock ST205 GT4 - like in some way they don't know the outcome - old vs new is always a cool comparo, but give respect to the GT4 where it's deserving. How about a new M3/M5 vs a 25yo E36 M3/E39 M5? The difference would be an absolute destruction...perhaps requiring time lapse on the cameras to wait for the older M car to catch up! Again, not dissing the older M cars; they too have a magic analogue appeal about them, and are a fantastic driver's car!
I am a huge Sega fan and always pronounce it 'say ga' but I have often heard people calling it 'sea ga'. The problem lies in its origin as it's birth was in Hawaii as an American company before being moved to Japan and becoming service games which was shortened to Sega. Complex history and many people pronounce it differently, I just pronounce it as I heard it on sonics intro or the ads back in the day.
I really wish toyota would give the 90s celica body the updated technology it deserves. I hate the design of the yaris it's so boring and basic. Kind of looks like something your grandmother would drive. They should have never discontinued the Celica
Right... have you ever been to a track? Have you ever driven purposeful cars? Most head to head content up here these days are obvious silly, but people still post videos.
Have a look at Archie Hamilton's video of a track day at Brands Hatch, you might want to fast forward the first few minutes but the track time is epic.
@@JamesYoung61 Archie is a great driver... Drove to the yaris's strength... Fast tight corners... Loved the video... ua-cam.com/video/jpIVxV8hmks/v-deo.html
@@whoguy4231 Archie wasn't driving, but his mate Jonno is pretty handy and the conditions obviously played into the GR's strengths, as Archie said not wet not dry, greasy.
Its hard to take these road tests seriously. Whilst I accept the Yaris is probably quicker overall, its not 8 seconds quicker. You can clearly see the difference in how both cars were driven, the Yaris was pushed hard because if it breaks, it just gets handed back to Toyota and they fix it and push it out for the next test. The Celica however has likely been rented from its owner and if they break it, they have to pay for it. If they drove that Celica as hard as they did the Yaris, the result would have been much closer.
Great review, The yaris's "sharp and pointy" front end is much much different a feel than the st205's I bet! I owned a 205, Absolutely loved it hell of a car. Really got my eyes on the yaris, bring them to Canada please Toyota!
Sorry mate, they’re not bringing it here. I’m from Canada too and I think Toyota’s not bringing it to North America. They said they will be releasing a different version of Yaris with the same engine and other parts but not the exact GR Yaris.
Cheap Pirelli Cinturato P7 I think they are mate. Not really in the same budget as Michelin Pilot Sport 4S that the Yaris was wearing. I don't think that made a massive difference because Plato wasn't pushing as hard in mine as he was in the Yaris. He was being mechanically sympathetic to my 27 year old girl.
@@meirionmatthias wow very cool to hear that tho! Lovely gt4 you have! Nice to see he was respectful of the old girl! Unlike tiff in the F40 he drove/launched! Surprised how praised he was for that in the comments! Anyways Have a good Christmas fella!
I loved a bit of "Seeega" Rally back in the day :D But Sega Rally for real, I bought my Gen 6 Celica GT because of that game- never quite made it to a Lancia Delta Integrale though..
It's not just Sega Rally what makes me worship the Celica a lot, even in the Initial D Arcade Stage titles it's such a fun car to drive. Probably one of the most underrated Toyota's/JDM's in my opinion
Sure, but the jury's out on how much more power the yaris can make, too. Not to mention that the yaris probably has a handling edge that a viscous coupling could never match.
Probably a significant amount of the difference in the time is due to the tire difference. The GR Yaris has Michelin PS4S tires vs whatever probably slightly old tire is on the Celica
When the 6th was released I thought front end styling was ugly compared to the 5th, but when the GT-Four came out with the extra cooling grille it’s looks were transformed giving it a more purposeful look and I soon forgot about the previous generations pop-up headlamps a bladed grille.
I've noted that several time with videos from various channels. I wonder if uploading to UA-cam somehow messes with the audio, because surely the sound people wouldn't intentionally mix it that way.
I had ST205 celica, it was a nice looking car and good to drive. I test drived new yaris gr yesterday and it's a great car to drive, so much fun. Much more fun what ST205 was on slippery roads.
My ST205 is not as tired as that car. Look how much it leans in the corners! Poor representation imo :P I know that because of my lap times on castle combe :P
The one looks like a proper handsome sports car and the other is like an ugly box on wheels...guess which is which. I don't care about how much better is the Yaris. It is ST205 every day of the week. And after 30 years the Celica will still be running and running and running and kicking some new gal's bottom...merry Christmas
Predictable result but the startling thing is the list price of these 2 cars when new is almost identicle. Which makes the original list price of the Celica nearly £50k (going by my crap maths) taking inflation into account. The Celica was never on my radar back then, they left me a bit cold but they were the best car on Sega Rally IMHO.
I feel it's very important to do these sort of tests with the SAME TIRES, could easily influence the results by simply using different tires, put all seasons on the Yaris and race tires on the celica and the results would be flipped
I'd love to see a "what will it take to get the celica as quick as the yaris" segment...performing incremental upgrades to the gtfour to see how much has to be done to get it up to speed. Obviously starting with bigger, lighter wheels, stickier tyres....then better suspension etc etc.
Biggest issue with the Celica is the massively heavy lump in the engine bay and the positioning, they understeer quite badly. Also the engine doesn't take well to big numbers without a lot of expensive work. Horses for courses, I guess. The only real comparison is the brand and the AWD aspect. The rest is like comparing apples to oranges.
@@Soulrollsdeep I've owned several GTfours..they can be made to turn in quite well and all but eliminate the understeering issues with a good wheel/tyre combo and a competent suspension setup....although its worth noting that when set up properly..they are REALLY hard on their tyres... As for weight..its like a 110kg difference between the two. It is a difference, but its not that big of a difference. Yes the 3s doesnt seem to respond as well to mods as alot of other engines, they are still really strong and can achieve great numbers if built right, however with only a 4kw difference between the two its not like you need to run the motor to the bleeding edge of its limits to bring it to a point where it may be competetive....if you stripped the passenger seat, rear seats, spare tyre and some sound deadening out of the 205 and showed it just a little more boost, you could get the power to weight ratio very close to that of the Yaris. Combined with a well tuned suspension setup and a good wheel/tyre package, the Yaris is well within its reach.
@@harleyjones5200 no doubt! Horses for courses though isn't it. I love old Japanese cars but I've been tainted by big power modern cars that do everything so well. Not sure I could even go back to a manual now, I love flappy paddle autos too much 😂
@@Soulrollsdeep absolutely...I have built and owned all sorts of mental old cars from 700hp soarers with obnoxious triple puck button clutches to 450hp Toyota engined E30 BMW's...the love for old cars built and modded to within an inch of their life is in my blood....yet I type this while sitting in my big, heavy, stupidly overpowered X5....and you know what.....I wouldn't trade this thing for anything I've had in the past. It's super comfortable, reliable, quiet most of the time....yet still makes me giggle like a school girl when I mash the go fast pedal. All while feeling just as nimble as any soarer or supra I've ever owned....just can't beat modern tech for the total package.

Audio volume really needs work on this.. from quiet TO COMPLETELY LOUD
There is that Plato smile he keeps for when he is in something he really enjoys driving.
Stressed me out how he says Sega Rally 😂
If that stressed you out, then you're a bit soft.

Video would've been better if they made Plato's voice and the engine sound from the cars as loud as the music lol.
But great driving and review from Plato as always.
I think a new M4 vs the E63 chassis M6 shootout would be nice.
Great content. Music too loud though.
We must give to the celica that it’s almost 25 years old, 30 horses less and much heavier than the gr yaris. In my opinion the celica is better
All guys from audio has allready started a christmas holidays? How did audio mixing went? 😁
I have both (lightly modified Gr Yaris Circuit for daily, highly modified ST205 for track) and the Yaris is so short and planted it's unbelievable down twisty A-roads... However the sound of an old school big boosty turbo cannot be beaten!
Surprise surprise, the new, more powerful Yaris with its new turbo, engine and AWD technologies is faster than the 25 year old ST205 😂😂😂
Good video but give the ST205 a remap, new suspension and new tyres and the results would be a hell of a lot closer.
You can't remap the OEM ecu. You have to buy a boost controller, and 3 inch exhaust for stage 1 gains.
Yes just slap a stage 1 map on the old classic like all the new modern cars lmfao who needs parts nowadays hey
Me watching videos of the GR Yaris in the states is like scrolling the instagram page of a girl I'm in love with who lives in a different country
fo real tho.. ;(
as an american rwd celica owner this car has no appeal to me. if i want to drive something ugly i'll just get in my truck
Not surprised at all. More power, shorter gearing, smaller faster spooling turbo, faster revving engine, probably a bit lighter frame too. Let's not forget awd system... Great little car for sure, and in proper hands a true track weapon too!
Can’t wait for my little GR to arrive next year

I wish we got the GR in the States at all, even though I can't afford it!
1.17 is a great time for a lap of Castle Combe in a stock car.
"seager rally"
c'mon plato, you're not so old you have that little clue how to pronounce SEGA are you? XD
Came here to say this. Glad someone beat me to it! :D
That's the way everyone pronounced it when I had a Master System 2.
I really adore 90s toyota design. Sleek shark head like front design celica and supra in mind. Such a contrast with current toyota design.
I really wish toyota would give the 90s celica body the updated technology it deserves. I hate the design of the yaris it's so boring and basic. Kind of looks like something your grandmother would drive. They should have never discontinued the Celica
Rx7 vs Rx8 R3
Can’t believe no one has done this yet.
Because the outcome would be obvious.
The RX8 R3 is an awful car and isn't a performance car by any stretch of the imagination.
Right... have you ever been to a track? Have you ever driven purposeful cars? Most head to head content up here these days are obvious silly, but people still post videos.
Honestly your comments has no weight. But appreciate your opinion.
@@caszzxs4104 I'm right, the RX7 was a true sports car, the RX8 is not a true sports car at all. The two can't be compared.

Yup easily make that Celica 400hp with some bolt ons and it won't be an ugly gay Yaris lol
Hype Tempo But celicas are ugly and gay as well though. Fat also. Modding both cars is like polishing turds.
I loved playing Seeger rally on my Seeger Saturn, I remember when it started up and the voice would say "Seeger". Happy days.
Is this a all new fifth gear or has it been on TV?
Its hard to take these road tests seriously. Whilst I accept the Yaris is probably quicker overall, its not 8 seconds quicker. You can clearly see the difference in how both cars were driven, the Yaris was pushed hard because if it breaks, it just gets handed back to Toyota and they fix it and push it out for the next test. The Celica however has likely been rented from its owner and if they break it, they have to pay for it. If they drove that Celica as hard as they did the Yaris, the result would have been much closer.
Take it easy with the music FFS
Great review, The yaris's "sharp and pointy" front end is much much different a feel than the st205's I bet! I owned a 205, Absolutely loved it hell of a car. Really got my eyes on the yaris, bring them to Canada please Toyota!
Sorry mate, they’re not bringing it here. I’m from Canada too and I think Toyota’s not bringing it to North America. They said they will be releasing a different version of Yaris with the same engine and other parts but not the exact GR Yaris.
@@patrickr4762 yeah I know, one can always hope though.

Why does the background music become three times louder than the voice whenever the guy stops talking?
It's not just Sega Rally what makes me worship the Celica a lot, even in the Initial D Arcade Stage titles it's such a fun car to drive. Probably one of the most underrated Toyota's/JDM's in my opinion
1:17 is as fast as a Cayman GTS... :D
Nice video FG!
@Yotota: daytime running lights is not only front lights, but rear too!
most celicas have more power..
Much more 😎, where the yaris power ends, the 3SGTE starts...
Sure, but the jury's out on how much more power the yaris can make, too. Not to mention that the yaris probably has a handling edge that a viscous coupling could never match.
Most Celicas are in much worse shape than this one.
@@boheyo how about most yaris?
the winner is the owner of that GT 4 , that thing is worth a fortune these days and only going up in value
While outcome was rather predictable, to be fair: What was the condition of bushing, shock absorbers and so on the old gal?
Maybe that was the leftovers from Bad Obsession Motorsport - as in, a Mini drivetrain in a Celica. :D
New or old tires?
It was fully restored but drives on fairly basic Pirelli tyres.
Probably a significant amount of the difference in the time is due to the tire difference. The GR Yaris has Michelin PS4S tires vs whatever probably slightly old tire is on the Celica
Old vs new: old bmw m3 vs new bmw m240i
E46 M3 vs M240i
When the 6th was released I thought front end styling was ugly compared to the 5th, but when the GT-Four came out with the extra cooling grille it’s looks were transformed giving it a more purposeful look and I soon forgot about the previous generations pop-up headlamps a bladed grille.
To loud music. :(
Put some microphones on the car and let the viewers hear the exhaust and engine sound and you will definitely have more likes and subscribers. 🏁🏁
Please fix the volume difference between the talking and music. This is unbearable.

My ST205 is not as tired as that car. Look how much it leans in the corners! Poor representation imo :P I know that because of my lap times on castle combe :P
Cool video, shame we couldn't hear the cars.
I'd take that Celica over the Yaris all day.
Two amazing cars...fun and fun.
The one looks like a proper handsome sports car and the other is like an ugly box on wheels...guess which is which. I don't care about how much better is the Yaris. It is ST205 every day of the week. And after 30 years the Celica will still be running and running and running and kicking some new gal's bottom...merry Christmas
Someone's got no money. lol...
Ooooooo Fifth Gear upgraded their camera
This is the first time i prefer the new one instead of the older, that "Yaris" is a little bomb
In my 53 years of age I've had two Touring Car hero's, Andy Rouse and Jason Plato. Rally driver's then McRae and Sainz

Oh my god the roll on that ST205. Definitely could use some stiffer suspension.
The cheeky bonus stage on sega rally. Someone was sweating to get there.
Good to see JP on track, loving the Yaris to.
Would love to see the difference is when they’re on the same tyres
I feel it's very important to do these sort of tests with the SAME TIRES, could easily influence the results by simply using different tires, put all seasons on the Yaris and race tires on the celica and the results would be flipped
No it wouldn't, the Yaris would still trounce the Celica. And I am a GT4 owner.
25 years of tire, drivetrain, and suspension improvements. Still love the old All-4 and GT-4 Celica's, and like the new Yaris GR as well!
Don't forget the Celica's lack of body rigidity compared to a modern car too!
@@harleyjones5200 no doubt! Horses for courses though isn't it. I love old Japanese cars but I've been tainted by big power modern cars that do everything so well. Not sure I could even go back to a manual now, I love flappy paddle autos too much 😂
