Only now have I seen a petrol car that could beat the low fuel consumption of our 2 Liter 1992 model Opel Astra. Most new cars have 4 cylinder and 16 valves which is stupid as you get a lot higher fuel consumption and the 16v only help at high RPM where you never drive. The most stupid I have ever seen was my moms 2001 Mazda 626 Diesel Turbo that har 16 valves, when you have a turbo those 16 valves do nothing as you can get more effect much more effctively by just give more turbo boost , and when you have a diesel it does not rev up the where the 16 valves have any effect...
200% agree.. I cudn't find any other car to replace my 92' Cyborg R, 01' RS4 Avant and my missus 12' MPS3.... even with offers, I can't seems to find a better replacement.
My wife had an ST205 WRC as her daily driver 1999 - 2002. She only sold it when our daughter was born and the strut brace in the boot meant she could not get the buggy in 😢 Did our first trackday together at Snetterton year 2000. I remember hanging onto the back of a Honda NSX for 5 laps at stupid speeds! Was an awesome car, never went wrong. We then bought a white ST185 Carlos Sainz in 2005 as a toy, that was sooooooo beautiful.
I would take this car over any performance car that costs £50k more. Pure style, simplicity, size (small). And then after this great period in time every manufacturer decided to 'cock it up'. Thank you James and Ant.
I drove a 1988 ST-165 GT-4 (called the All Trac Turbo here in the states) for several years from 1998. It was my dream car and was a low-miles bone-stock car when I got it. The US version was a bit different than the GT4 the rest of the world got; it was always going to be an expensive car here so they set it up as a luxury GT with amazing, supremely supportive adjustable seats and other amenities that were restricted to luxury cars in that era. This was the car that taught me a car can be TOO good; it was so massively competent that it was boring to drive at anything but the most extreme speeds. When I got it I immediately un-detuned it and quickly replaced the tank-like rally wheels with some 17" Riken alloys that weighed only 19 lbs each and a set of V-rated tires. The car was transformed. We came to refer to the Cruise Control as the 'speed limiting device' because if you weren't paying attention you'd find yourself going 100 mph; it really didn't feel any different than 60 mph at that speed. It had the added bonus that almost no one knew what it was and baiting the hOnDa BoYz was great fun. When it was introduced the US automotive press dubbed it 'The Gentleman's All-Weather Interceptor' and that suited it; I could make a 3-1/2 hour drive and arrive as fresh as if I had just run down to the shops. It was brilliant. Sadly maintenance costs and repairs exceeded our budget and after carefully insuring that he knew exactly what he was in for I sold it on to a friend who kept it until he passed on years later.
Every time I see this car it brings me back to Sega Rally on my hand me down Sega Saturn from my brothers back in the late 90s Also, was such a treat to see the is next to the 550 the other day, once you’ve seen it in person you can appreciate just how nice this car really is.
Man I loved the Sega Rally Arcade machine! There was a 4 gang linked set at my local Bowling Alley as a Teen, it was so good! Disappointingly it was really bad when it came out on the PlayStation 2!

I remember them going on sale (yes showing my age to) and there was a sense of Toyota quality about them lacking from other competitors. One of my work colleagues bought an import variant in red and it did look the business, more so when parked next to my other work colleagues Mercedes 190E 2.3 16V Cosworth - goodness I miss those times! The Toyota Celica the GOAT literally the best sports car Toyota ever made regardless of what gen or model we are talking about. What makes them great is the fact that they can be dailyed super easy and the buy in price for them is still cheap. You can get RWD models front wheel models and AWD models and all of them have rally credentials thus making them some of the best backroad and city performance machine. Great practicality as well I've hauled over 600lbs of scrap moved furniture and have even slept in my old 81 Celica while also using it as a daily with over 500k miles.
Awesome! My old ‘95 GT4 got through two engines due to ringland failure but it was great fun to own. Those projector lights were a pretty penny but absolutely worth it, not sure what’s up with the clutch though as having replaced mine with a Nippon kit while I had the engine out the first time, it was very easy and progressive to operate. Lovely to see one still going and getting the treatment it deserves.
I still think about my first 90's love, I never was into it until 2010 or so, the Nissan 300zx twin turbo short wheel base version, that definitely is my 90's car affair..
The ST205 GT4 is another childhood dream car i'm looking to buy in near future. As with yourself, it stems from SEGA rally! Was lucky enough to pickup my 300ZX (SWB TT Slicktop) and an ST-220 last year so more saving needed first 🤣
I think the 299hp figure you are seeing is for the grp A actual rally ( illegalities aside). Grp a rally cars were all circa 300hp as governed. The road going was circe 250 published

It would appear, Ant 🐜, that we have similar experiences and memories...... Your first car is not exactly a million miles apart from my Datsun 100A and I had a lot of fun in this motor. Your Father's Toyota Crown is another one that I had the pleasure of being driven in. That was a circa 1882 model with the 2.8 litre engine and was originally used in Iraq as a Company car for 3 years - subsequently kept/imported by a Family member and the luxury was unrivalled by any other motor of its era. I have mixed feelings about the CELICA as, having once driven a modified IMPREZA of the same era, always felt that the Scooby handled just slightly better. These days my only chance to "drive" these iconic 🚘🚘 is on a Games console lol. Gran Turismo 4 is my go to game of choice and getting a decent setup is fun with no risk of wrecking the engine. It still has a very pretty face, I must admit. My first car was a 1978 Toyota Corolla sedan. I sadly used it for work, driving it 300 km a day, sometimes 7 days a week, till the timing chain became so sloppy I could hear it above the radio, and the rings so worn, that I spent more on oil than I did on petrol. An auction house flogged it for me, and the auctioneer kindly told me that the $600 he gave me was what he could sell the gearbox, alone, for. BASTARD. The gearboxes were strong enough for V8 use and were phenomenally smooth, with a short throw. The finest gearbox I have ever driven. Curiously, I was repairing video games while racking up all of those kms. I bloody hate the things, but I learned electronics via the experience.
I know where your coming from I owned a GT 4 import which I bought on impulse as one of my customers was selling it as he was getting a company car it's certainly got a wow factor specifically at 2am on a open road with no traffic about and let it of it's lead lol !!
Jay I spend half video to see if your on the roads I learnt to drive xr2 and ride on some or those roads where made to supply USAF base s brillant back in the day 80s no where else I know with lanes that good
I own an ST205 and recently drove a GR Yaris. When i compare the driving experience, the 205 wins hands down. The Yaris felt numb to me and it didnt help that i had high expectations to begin with. The Yaris is most likely the faster car, but i did not like the amount of turbo lag it had.
The brakes on my 78 Corolla weren't squeaky, till I realised I had to change the front pads, after which they wouldn't shut up till I sprayed them with some brake cleaner, and unfortunately yes they were dusty alright. I have subscribed.
One very important thing not mentioned: these cars are very small by today's standards. So you can drive the crap out of it without having to wince and flinch every time a Vauxhall Mokka driver comes the other way, taking up half your lane.
There is no such thing as "too safe". Go and watch crash test videos of the Alfa Romeo 147 and 156, or the Citroën Xantia... iconic cars, for sure, but would you really want to drive one after seeing those videos? There was even a case of a Ferrari 456 owner in Britain who lost the entirety of his left leg to a single-vehicle crash at 40mph, and damn nearly lost the other leg too (femoral artery ruptured).
@@richardharrold9736 You’re missing my point. I want to drive a car, not be dictated to by stupid systems cutting in every 2 seconds. I would argue that some of those systems are actually dangerous. I have a modern car and x3 1990s cars. The modern Nissan keeps slamming the brakes on when the car is near things. That’s dangerous!!! It doesn’t do contra flows.
@@andrewellis5092 those systems can be irritating, certainly, but they haven't been made mandatory for no reason, they've been extensively researched, developed and tested, and most of the time they're a potential life-saver.

@@andrewellis5092 they do not add significantly to the car's weight (passive safety does that far more) but they are proven to prevent or reduce the severity of accidents as and when they do occur. They're not there simply to generate profits for manufacturers.
Oh it was definitely cheating. The scrutineers struggled to find the cleverly engineered bypass of the throttle restrictor orifice. The car received a full year ban.

90s cars were great. Audi RS2, E39 M5, 205 GTI, R5 Turbo, Golf Mk 2, Lotus Elise, Clio Williams, Honda NSX, the list is awesome.

RS2 is more a 1980s car, the B4 80 came out in, what, 1988? R5 Turbo was definitely 80s. 205 was on sale from, what, 1986? Likewise the Golf Mk2.

I should have mentioned that they're aftermarket brakes oriented for track performance.
The 3SGTE never made 299 in any market, it was 245 and 265 in the later toyota Caldina.
