Best real world review on this car I have seen so far. You are the first person I have seen sit the backseat. Can’t get this car in America 🇺🇸 now but I like it.
He makes a very good point about the m140i, it is a scary machine! On a nice smooth A road in perfect conditions it surely would accelerate faster than the Yaris and probably more entertaining on track as well (I never tracked mine). But in 90% of driving situations you’d find yourself in on UK roads (and weathers) the Yaris will blow it out of the water. I can definitely believe the 4.6 time. I pick mine up a few weeks away and will gladly test it (after the first 1000km) :)
The real elephant in the room is that the Fiesta ST-3 now starts at £25,500 with metallic paint. What the hell is that all about! The FOCUS ST started from £25k in 2017. That's £26,900 today. The special edition Fiesta ST 200 was £18k in 2016. That's equivalent to £20k today.
Lots of comments on here comparing it to cars like the Audi S3, Golf R etc. in the real world (on public roads) I think they address different needs. In a straight line or on a major A road my GR Yaris will get destroyed by all the premium hot hatches but on the twisty and bumpy B roads where I live, the roles are completely reversed and in the wet, well hardly anything would keep up with it, it’s just sensational. If you want practicality, performance and a premium badge go for one of the hot hatches but if you want something that is impractical but has no rival in terms of putting a smile on your face, nothing beats it. Finally, one year down the road it looks like only a handful GR Yaris’ are being sold in 2023 (Australias allocation seems to around 100) so residuals on these are likely to be rock solid and with a 10 year Toyota warranty in place I can’t see me selling mine anytime soon.
Nice review, although it might have been helpful to go into more depth about the pros/cons of the different versions. I also find that motoring journalists dismiss sat nav and say use Android auto without thinking it through, in my opinion. I quite like Waze but it's not much cop if you lose your data connection, you still get the maps for quite a while but the guidance is lost. Whereas the built in sat nav continues to work fine, so I prefer to have both. I also thought Android Auto would be wonderful, from reviews like these but the reality is that it sometimes crashes or doesn't work properly (I've used ti for some months on Ford, Skoda and Vauxhall) although it's better than it was. I also found that only some apps are compatible so my standard radio player didn't work and I had to track down one which did. So, for me, I want a car with Android Auto but I also want DAB and built in sat nav (as an aside I was surprised to find the latest Skoda sat nav was possibly slightly better than Waze for the journey I used it with). Just my tuppence worth :-)
I hope the suspension on the Yaris is not as firm as the Ford Focus RS, because that was brutally firm. I had to sell it after only 8 months of ownership as all my filings loosened up.😉
in portugal, the 0.9 yaris, from 2007, would cost the same, as this.. as a portuguese citizen, I really feel attracted to move to UK, and buy a rally car, for the price of a yaris!
How funny people being upset about this car like anyone is forcing them to buy these. Don't worry, those who really want to buy these cars can barelly get their hands on it, so you most likely will never have one anyways.
"Forget about the Yaris nameplate.." he says. Hells bells I removed it and the GR-FOUR plastic badge - rear looks mean and clean with only the Toyota and GR badges..
Unfortunately you can't "buy one of these", the delivery date is now as far out as May 2022... another car manufacturer (like Suzuki and the Jimny) that can't keep up with demand.
I hope for you toyota will sold this yaris in USA at the same time in europe we don 't get camry V6 TRD Avalon TRD or new IS 350 Fsport or V8 ect grettings from Belgium 👍😎
An automatic transmission model as GR Yaris RS is sold in JDM. That's FWD, CVT. 1.2 liter NA. 3 cylinders. Weight 1130 kilogram. The prices are 26000 US dollars. An exterior and a chassis are GR. The explanation of a car critic isn't enough for power, but it's more light-weight and fun. It's recommended to the consumer who would like to save money.
that statement shows you are still young !! when you get old you dont give a fig about what other folk think !! Im 58 and have a 1971 Escort RS1600 BDA and a 2017 Focus RS and grey balding hair, I dont care !!
The whole homologation story from Toyota is just a marketing ploy. The WRC car shares nothing in common except the roof and door count with the road car unlike the Group A days. And they wouldn't waste that much money for a tiny edge in the lower classes like WRC2.
You're likely correct re marketing ploy! Why allegedly build a totally new rally car for just a year b4 completely new hybrid rules! Then give it large re only 25000 being built blah blah... BUT I still ordered one as it's phenomenal and NOTHING else out there to equal it dynamically spec for spec!
@@afcgeo882 Mate. I don't like the golf R, end of. You clearly feel the same about the GR yaris. The newer mk8 might be better than the mk7 but I'm not interested in it for many reasons, especially that it's not manual in uk so not even worthy of a test drive
For people wondering why the seats sit so high check out Robert Mitchell's channel where he pulls the interior apart to reveal the seat rails. They are a mess and need to be changed. Hopefully in 2022 Toyota will address the problem and fix the seat rails in the GR Yaris.
I really don’t get why they didn’t make second gear 5mph taller to nail the 0-60 top trumps. It’d be in the low 4’s high 3’s if you didn’t have to do two manual shifts.
Problem with this car is that it is essentially as inert as most other modern hatches (steering, driving position etc). It's very fast A to B, especially in the UK, but not the most feelsome experience
@@relentlesspursuit6894 Perhaps our frames of reference aren't the same. If you drive nothing but hot hatches maybe it feels very different, but compared more broadly to performance cars it drives like a very fast hot hatch
@@feelsgoodman245 I've heard many liken it to a 911 - we also all know that itl give most supercars a run for there money. It's a Hot Hatch in shape, but for most it gives the feel of something much more special and seriously capeable. Comparing it to generic hot hatches is selling it well short!
Hi George - The Civic Type was our favourite hot hatch before the GR came along, hence the comparison. Both cars also cost a similar amount. We haven't tested the new Golf R yet but it's quite a lot more expensive (starts at over £39k in the UK).
@@James-RJM No. It’s available with a 6-speed manual, just not in the UK yet. The DSG is faster and more satisfying though. 0-60mph is 4.7 seconds and it fits actual 4 people and cargo. Plus it has actual rear torque vectoring via its “drift” mode.
@@afcgeo882 New mk8 is dsg only mate and, for me, shit ott tech and cheesy extreme Ambient lighting etc. Obviously the latter is subjective. It appears to be another, marginally different model to the previous. A VAG formula to a tee! Previous 7.5 I test drove. Don't get me wrong, it was effective but again, for me, boring. I compared it in conversations to someone competent but also who irons their socks! Lol. But each to their own 😉
funny, if this had a Ford badge on it, all you would hear is people slagging off the cheap plastics inside, the pathetic waste of space behind the seats, the weak engine sound, the silly piped in simulated engine noise, the poor visibility under the interior mirror over the info centre, the flimsy parcel shelf, the fact that with a proper paint colour and the only spec anyone should buy makes the car a whopping £34000 !!, also a 3 cylinder is an awful engine, thrummy and sounds like a 4 pot with a plug lead off ! BUT.. because it has a Toyota badge everyone is looking past all the bad points and hyping the hell out of it as if there has never been a turbo all wheel drive hatchback before !! Try going on a long motorway trip in one, its short geared to get the performance but 70mph in 6th is about 3000 revs, whereas most cars nowadays are doing 80mph at 3000 revs, the thing is a buzzbox and needs to be driven hard all the time otherwise its got the 'off boost' flat feeling.
I think you have missed the point of the car! It's not a motorway cruiser, nor is it practical, it's not meant to have a luxurious interior - it's a pure drivers car, most owners have them as a 2nd,3rd, 4th car or part of a larger collection. At the price point, it's an absolute steal. As it happens, if you want a "used" example, itl cost you thousands over list, if you want a new one the waitlist is now Dec 2022!

@@mainman2999 I think you are still missing the point of the car! Personally the GR is far superior to the RS, but they are clearly different animals. @@mainman2999 when I drive my 3.0 6cyl 480bhp RWD car, it does feel different to the GR but so it should, is it more special than the GR, no, is it quicker round the twisties, no, is it more fun, no. The GR is far more advanced than the Ford - does the Ford have the following : carbon roof, aluminium body panels, 2 LSD's, was it hand built, is it a bespoke chassis, is it a homologation car, does it weigh less than 1300kg. The answer to all of that is NO. The GR will launch quicker than a Porsche GT3, Urus, 488, A45S and pretty much any super car around - and will destroy a stock RS. Virtually nothing can keep up with it on a wet twisty B road. I own a GR, its solely for that purpose, a B road blaster - the 3.0 6cyl 480 bhp RWD does a good enough job as a daily, and my other cars suit other tasks. I must be getting old because I like a nice hot hatch but I also like comfort luxury and quality
To be honest the interior of the Cossie, Integrale, Integra, Evo 6 are all pretty trash. The 1995 Ford Escort was an abomination as a standard car. I've got a Yaris GRMN and they always trash the interior but it's really fine actually, does the job, solidly made and doesn't creak or rattle. I sat in a GR last week and it's nice actually, the gearbox makes the car feel better quality because it's so weighty and precise. I think if Peugeot or Renault had made a homologation Clio, 308 or Mégane I don't think they would be drawing attention to the dashboard quality. Is the Focus RS really a better interior than the Yaris, doesn't look it to me. The German cars and the Civic do skew this perception a little bit because they seem quite a bit better.
It's because they spend all the money on the driving aspect of the car , same with the focus rs mk3 that had the most sophisticated 4wd on the planet when it came out amd people just moaned about the Interior , and it's only now that vw made the golf r etc more playful with drift mode ,because of the driver engagement that the focus had , only hard-core drivers want a manual gearbox , the rest just want to have it done for them while all the computers keep them on the road

I find it an over-hyped, expensive, cheapo-interior'd, one-trick pony. It does the AWD traction-tastic thing, great. But that just gets boring very quickly. I prefer FUN, and sliding the back end around at roundabouts. Even with the remap cost added, my M140i was still 10 grand cheaper than the Yaris staring price, for a 2.5 year old with under 15k miles. And it's quicker, better equipped, nicer interior, is a lot more practical, much more relaxing (in comfort mode with the adaptive suspension), yet at the same time MUCH more fun in sport+ when I want to get the car sideways.
@@chantalslut I have watched videos of ppl adjusting the rear bias as much as it will go, and it 'sort of' drifts a bit, but it's artificial, and it's still not like a proper RWD car. I'll admit, I haven't driven one yet, but I have driven plenty of AWD hatches, as I work in the motor trade, and I don't see anything yet that can give the fun factor of a pure RWD car, even the new GolfR has a drift mode, like the old Focus RS, but neither are real, it's a sort of uncontrollable 4 wheel drift which slides a bit more at the back. Only time you can use it is in a wide open car park or something, not usable on the road, and pointless.
I can confirm the M140 is not quicker, nor is it more fun than the GR - I own both, I'd pick the Toyota key over the M140 key any day of the week! The GR is significantly quicker on UK roads, that's in the dry - in the wet the M140 would not see which way the GR went!

I even said so much in my original post, which you seem to have completely disregarded. The Yaris, as I have already said, and you seem to have missed, does not give the same fun factor (because it grips too well), doesn't have as much kit/tech, isn't as high quality interior, isn't as comfy, doesn't have the same practicality, isn't anywhere near as quick in a straight line even in the wet, sounds sh*t in comparison to the B58, looks sh*t imo, and is way too expensive. It is a nippy, AWD (thus good cornering machine), and thats it.
Definitely cancelling my order now I know I can only get 3 carry on size suitcases in the back.
I know right. This should easily carry 7 adults and tow a 2.5t caravan. What a joke of a car…

Excellent review - really enjoyed it.
I like how you've waited till the hype died down a bit. These day one panic reviews are less informative.
No such issues with Apple CarPlay.
SATNAV is also helpful for those that want to de-google and/or have privacy concerns.

Toyota needs to bring back the Yaris nameplate back to the states, but only have it in the GR trim
So, if you scrub out the "trim" aspect you technically have a GR Yaris. Use a bit of imagination and you could have some fun...
The whole homologation story from Toyota is just a marketing ploy. The WRC car shares nothing in common except the roof and door count with the road car unlike the Group A days. And they wouldn't waste that much money for a tiny edge in the lower classes like WRC2.
I agree. WRCs, much like American stock cars, only look like production cars. They are actually all custom designed vehicles.
You're likely correct re marketing ploy! Why allegedly build a totally new rally car for just a year b4 completely new hybrid rules! Then give it large re only 25000 being built blah blah...

Why the Civic Type R comparisons when the Golf R is a thing?
Hi George - The Civic Type was our favourite hot hatch before the GR came along, hence the comparison. Both cars also cost a similar amount. We haven't tested the new Golf R yet but it's quite a lot more expensive (starts at over £39k in the UK).
It's also, only, dsg. More satisfying travelling on public transport...!
@@James-RJM No. It’s available with a 6-speed manual, just not in the UK yet. The DSG is faster and more satisfying though. 0-60mph is 4.7 seconds and it fits actual 4 people and cargo. Plus it has actual rear torque vectoring via its “drift” mode.

funny, if this had a Ford badge on it, all you would hear is people slagging off the cheap plastics inside, the pathetic waste of space behind the seats, the weak engine sound, the silly piped in simulated engine noise, the poor visibility under the interior mirror over the info centre, the flimsy parcel shelf, the fact that with a proper paint colour and the only spec anyone should buy makes the car a whopping £34000 !!, also a 3 cylinder is an awful engine, thrummy and sounds like a 4 pot with a plug lead off ! BUT.. because it has a Toyota badge everyone is looking past all the bad points and hyping the hell out of it as if there has never been a turbo all wheel drive hatchback before !!

Most GR owners dont daily drive them, interiors in these type of cars are pretty unimportant in the grand scheme of things
