  • The cartoon birth out of the hologram gimmick that didn't sell. Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light was a short lived media franchise consisting of a line of action figures from Hasbro, released in 1987, and its related promotional tie-ins, which included a comic book series published by Star Comics and a half-hour animated television series made by Sunbow Productions in the same year.

Exo-Squad by a country mile. Don't care a bit about the actual toys but that was one hell of show, way more mature and well-plotted than any of its fellows. Actually had a proper plot - and it was starting on a second grander story arc when it got the axe.

It is a shame that the show did't continue. Personally I did enjoy the series as much plus the toy line, all around Visionaries was amazing.

One of my favourite cartoons. The concept made me very happy and had me designing my own Visionary persona.

This is the nicest picture quality I've seen. Where did you source it? Thanks for the video

Surprised Hasbro hasn't incorporated it into Magic the Gathering or Dungeons and Dragons.

Ironically I happened to stumble on this video by pure chance.
Personally I think what nailed series was the writing. Apart from the first two episodes I don't think the show was written very well.
If memory serves me correct, around 87 George Bush was elected president (Papa Bush and not 911 bubba bush), a recession was starting to take place because of his policies. Kind of a repeat of what we're seeing with Biden here today.
Quite a few toy companies during the '80s start putting out toy lines that were quite expensive, and many parents didn't want to pay the price that they were asking for.
But one thing that I think a lot of these companies underestimated was that they thought kids were stupid and that they could hand them any shlop that they wanted, and they would gobble it up.
    Fandom can be quite fickle.
Honestly I think that's the reason why GoBots for example lost out to transformers. I think the American show wasn't nearly as good as the Japanese machine robo that was aired in Japan.
Hannah Barbara was very venomate against violence in cartoons, which I found ironic since what got him popular was he created Tom and Jerry. Which correct me if I'm wrong, was a rather violent show.
Wokeism even existed back then, and I think it was a detriment to both He-Man and GoBots because he refused to go with the original concept that was given by the toy companies and came up with his own version of what the toy should be.
I bet you anything if you were to take the original machine robocartoon from Japan back in the 80s, dubbed it in English, and literally reissued the '80s toys to American market, those toys would do very well because I think the Japanese show was better done than the American.
That's why I think transformers failed after the movie. I personally didn't think the movie was horribly bad, but I didn't think it was that great either. Had good animation, but I don't think it was written very well. And I thought the third season on was poorly done. That's why I think transformers didn't last long after that.
Same issue with visionaries. The first two episodes were pretty good, but after that It got very sloppy.
There was a second season slated and about another eight other figures designed for the series, but never happened because I didn't think through things well enough.
It's a shame because I could have been a really good series.

I think the toys were too simular. All Knights in Scifiarmors and all with a hologram gimmik. No real need to get them all when your not a die hard fan.

It's still so paiinful I loved Visonaries I had everything all the VHS, The comics , the characters and most of the vehicles i was missing the two big vehicles but had the exclusive figures due a car boot sale. I'm in the UK I wish visonaries could take flight again as there is niche in there for a decent anime or animated show magic and technology.
I loved as an adult sewing about there plans for season 2 and the toy line ans reckon it could have been something.
Let's just hope Hasbro don't ruin Power Rangers like Visonaries.
