My father offered to help me get a job working on a merchant ship. It seems like my one way ticket to a better life
Let me know how it works out.....
How is it going now? I’m thinking about joining the Merchant Marines after the Marine Corps. Or maybe the Navy after the Marine Corps.
I am a felon but I am really trying to better my self and my life are there any opportunities for somebody like me in the industry
Great Video as always! Awesome info! As far as documents you covered about all of them, One other that they should get is certified in First Aid & CPR. Thanks for sharing! 👍⚓
Yes And at some point they make you take basic safety training which includes that
Good afternoon from Auckland, New Zealand ... 🙂🙂🙂
Hello Peter cheers
Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) require all the Eyesight & Medical Assessments before you can go into training & join your new Ship. Not just have the Passport our Country requires the MSIC Card to access the Port.
Thanks for sharing that information
Hey Jeff, love you, love the channel! I'm 39 years old and wish so badly I had learned about this career years ago. I have over 20 years of logistics experience (mostly land based hold for some export work I've done). I'm married and I live nowhere near ports; but I feel so drawn to this kind of work. Do you have any advice to someone like me who has years of logisitical management experience to transition to this kind of work?
Possibly a storekeeper on a military ship... but if you want to do something different, there are 3 departments to choose from.
thank you man keep this video up these are life task for me i want this job👍
I will do a new one very soon...
I’m currently in the process of applying to my local community college with the hopes of transferring next year to Cal-Maritime (I have a meeting today with a counselor at Cal-Maritime). I’ll be turning 30 this year, and I know that by the time I graduate, I’ll be in my mid-thirties. Do you believe it is worth it for someone of my age to go through this process? I had SIU on my horizons for a long time, but I didn’t want to start from the bottom.
I have been sailing since I was a child (practically grew up on the ocean) and have always wanted a career where I get to do what I love. Lots of things happened throughout my adulthood that forced me to put my goals on hold (being caretaker for my ill family members, COVID, etc…), but with my current circumstances I don’t want to waste anymore of my life wishing and wondering where I could’ve been if I just ignored the noise and went for my dream. My long term goal is to one day be one of the first female pilots in Hawaii.
First of all I commend you on taking care of your family... I personally do not feel it is too old at all because obviously it is a passion of yours and not just a quick thought rather something you have thought about for many years. In my opinion I would say go for it if you don't want to start from the bottom then that would be the only alternative.... but my opinion is absolutely go for it I can tell you have the passion for it and don't be a stranger to the channel...please return.😎🚢🐋🌊⚓️
@@JeffOnboard I have definitely thought about this for the last 10 years and I know for certain that it’s what I want to do. I also worked as a college and career counselor for a long time who helped students make their dreams of pursuing the maritime industry come true. Many of our students found success from attending institutions such as SIU, CMA, & Tongues Point. I’ve not only promised myself, but also all of my wonderful students that I will follow through eventually and I definitely don’t want to let them or myself down anymore. I really appreciate your kind reassurance and have definitely subscribed! The information you provide in your videos are so helpful and it only inspires future mariners such as myself, so thank you.
Hey there. Love the information you’ve provided! I’m very interested in this career that I enrolled for my Twic today & still doing more research. I live in Georgia and there are no schools or classes I can take for basic training. Do you have any suggestions? Please
I just found one school in Jacksonville but I think you can find other schools in that area maybe the price will be a tiny bit lower..I think $895 is more normal
qualitymaritimetraining.com/courses/?course_cat=all-courses#:~:text=QMT%20offers%20a%20comprehensive%20variety,STCW%20training%20courses%20and%20programs.
I found another possibly in Jax.

What about ship security or security awareness I believe it’s called do I have to do that with my stcw
Call the NMC (Nationsl Maritime Center) to make sure...search them on Google and you will see the number...they have skate answered my questions.
@@JeffOnboard Forsure thank you I found out u do talked to a friend that went through the process
Hey Jeff is there anyway I can get in contact with you to discuss more about this Merchant Marine Information
jbull68@gmail.com
I am at sea now so give me time to reply...
I have a question also. I have my passport and my Twic. At the bottom of my Twic card it’s a ship propeller. What does that mean?
WHEN I GET ON MERCHANT MARINE WANT TO WORK MORE & SEE THE WORLD ONCE AGAIN I AM RETIRED ARMY OF 22YEARS I AM RECOVERING FROM LEFT HIP REPLACEMENT SURGERY & WHEN I GET CLEARED FROM THE DOCTOR TO GO BACK TO WORK MERCHANT MARINE HERE I COME😊 WELCOME ME ABOARD THANK YOU
Absolutely and hopefully I see you out there And you can join me in a video sometime. Do you already have your basic safety class as well?
Have a masters degree and im not young but im burnt on my job and want to do something different. Do you start off a higher pay?
I'm in similar, have a bachelors, use to do advertising, now bookkeeping, want a career change, with no maritime academy training is best way to joine the sea lift command at bottom, or is there a better way with a better income in the merchant marine with US Flag ship? Already know get TWIC card then MMC, but then what? And what are the starting salaries, please don't tell me it's 23K as on sea lift command site!
No if your degree does not have anything to do with this industry it will not guarantee you a higher starting salary you will still have to start at the bottom....
You will definitely make more than $23000 a year even if you are entry level but the amount of pay you receive varies from ship to ship...... There are no set wages it depends totally on what ship you are on
I have no twic, passport etc can i get all thia done and on a ship in less than 3 months
It depends on how long it takes for you to get back Your MMC and the other documents. I really don't know but I would imagine you can get them within that time frame and then you have to have a physical and drug screening done. Are you going to join MSC or the Union? You need to make arrangements for those things as well
@@JeffOnboard either or tbh and thank you for the incite
I know this is a year ago - is there still a need for man power for this in your opinion? Is not going to four year school still a better option than usual?
There still is the need.... what department are you thinking about?
Do college degrees make any difference in this career?
It is totally not necessary the only difference is you will start out at a higher salary and position but if you're not sure this is what you want to do you would have to make The Choice... Many people think they will like a job and end up hating it
Hay Jeff I’m 21.. I want to do this but I don’t have time for school at the moment but I want to maximize my pay how dose that work.
Wow you can't worry about that now. You need to get all the documents that you will need to sail on a ship and then you need to go to the Union. Or MSC unless you choose private companies
Hey I’ve just became aware of this industry and currently pursuing this career. I just got twic card. When I get my passport and MMC then can I apply to the union or all I need is my twic and passport to start apply for jobs?
You need everything to put on for jobs. When you throw in they send all your info to the company so you need it all...drug screen, physical everything.
If you're younger why not apply to the apprentice. program.
I’m 25 years and don’t really have the time or resources to get into a program that’ll last 4 years.
No where near 4 years at the SIU school, but either way that works best for sure do it
Ok so if it’s not 4 years how long is the program at siu before I can get to work on the ship
I am a merchant marine deck ofcr from the Philippines sailing in various types of ships overseas mainly Lpg gas carriers. Is it possible to work there in the US as a seafarer and what are the requirements.
Contact US Coast Guard to ask how or if you have what you need...

@@JeffOnboard i have just emailed to you. Jeff
@@JeffOnboardcan you help me out also?
Can women do this job?
Yes, and many do Jazzy. Are you considering it?
How do you get on
Not sure what you're asking
Things sure have changed! I started with the SIU @ HLSS back in the early 70's, the month I turned 16YO. Back then all you needed was your fire fighting cert, lifeboat ticket. My papers were attached to my SSN and the papers had NO expiration date. Paul Hall, Mike Sacco and Ken Conklin were on site back then. Started with a B book. It used to be that you couldn't get your Merchant docs without sea time and you couldn't get sea time without your Merchant docs!
Yes the industry has changed a lot and actually Mike Sacco just retired recently
as a young man who wants to get into maritime work, i do have worries about making such large commitments such as going to school for it, since i am afraid i am looking at the job through rose-tinted glasses. From what I've seen and heard from from experienced mariners online, i've heard many pros and cons and it still sounds appealing to me, but i can never know if it's for me until i get some hands on experience. Although if my notions of the job aren't wrong, i feel like it can be a great way to discipline myself with hard work, and help me appreciate my life more.
It it's not for everyone...Yes you don't know until you try.
You are away from your home life a lot, work long hours 7 days a week, if you hate the food you can't always go out to get what you like, etc....
I'm considering this career path, I would want to work "tech" or on the Bridge, should I go to the USMMA to get ahead? Thanks for the video! (I'm a Freshman in Highschool) Also is there a large pay difference between those who go to a 4-year school vs 1-year or no schooling?
Well if you go to a four-year Academy you will enter the industry at a higher pay rate or you can just work your way up from the bottom to achieve whatever job you like... if you acquire a degree however and you decide a few years later you don't want to sell you can always use that degree shoresight as well that would be the key benefit in my opinion
Good video. I have been a Merchant Mariner for 10 years, and everything he has said is very solid information. I mainly work out of the Gulf of Mexico on ships related to the oilfield like supply, frac, or anchor vessels. If you are not interested in unions, consider working out of the Gulf. Also, if you are considering college at the moment as an engineer, I would consider Maine or Kingspoint over Suny. There is a shortage of work and the shortage isnt something that will change in a month or so. Also keep in mind that as a mariner you can live anywhere you want and you do not have to be contained to just your state. I have American coworkers who live in Brazil and Thailand at the moment.
Yes I live in Brasil as well
Lots of great info Jeff! As someone whose been looking into this alot i just been trying to find the best route to become a seamen merchant outside of Unions cause There aren't many down here in south Florida unless im looking in the wrong direction, anyway we can get into direct contact?
email and we can exchange info....I talk to people always and try to help

@@JeffOnboard OK. Thanks
Thanks for all of your information! This is the reason why I got my MMC and TWIC now, all of this was very helpful. I’m a Chief Engineer aboard a Moran Harbor Tugboat now, but I’m the future I plan on upgrading to the Articulated Tug Barges ( ATBs ) and even come of these huge Container Ships like you do. This is awesome!
Thank you and how to see you out here some day
Thanks for the information. I am starting now for a new career as a Navy Vet, 26 yrs at major airline. Now in Chicago. Was station at NAS Oceana, Virginia Beach.
I lives biking distance from NAS Oceana....Love the annual air show there....thanks for your service....stay in touch.
Is there an age limit. I am 57 years old now.
As long as you can pass the physical exam and get a fit for Duty I don't see any problem...😎🚢⚓️🌊🐋
So here's what I gathered from watching the video.
Passport
Twic
MMC
Medical certificate
The go to a reputable union for jobs assignments.
Are there union dues? And when do I pay them before I start working or after first paycheck?
Is there anything I'm missing?
Im going for entry level first. Btw
email and we can exchange info if you like...I can help
jbull68@gmail.com
Does the SIU Apprenticeship offer financial compensation for training?
Not sure, but call the school they can answer for sure.
Hey Jeff I have a question would you recommend this career to somebody who's coming on to 50 years old? I will be 49 in October and I live in the Los Angeles area and im considering becoming a Mariner.
Absolutely. Many people change careers and if you are interested then give it a shot......
As long as you can pass the physical, I don’t think age is a huge deal. If you are 50 and in good shape, you should be fine from what I’m told by my family members in the business. They are all over 50.
100% correct
How do i apply for seaman book in the state 🎉
What would entry level job title be. DEU is one is there any more titles... What about GUDE???.
DEU, Wiper, GUDE Are basically just the same job they are the entry level jobs in the engine department....
Deck entry-OS, STOS
Steward-SA
ALSO GVA Which is a general vessel assistant is also an entry level job
Great info! Pro tip I found out the hard way, they take your original birth certificate and mail it off with your passport paperwork. Guess what you need for a TWIC if you don't have a passport alteady? That birth certificate! Have fun jumping through hoops ordering another while yours goes on a trip for 3 months.
That is crazy I guess they changed it or something because I never had to send an original before that is terrible. I'm glad you mentioned that I will definitely find out about it and do and updated video on that topic.
Hey Jeff, watched your pros and cons video, and pulled the Maritime Centers phone number from a comment. Called that number and was put on hold and no one picked up. Is there another way I can talk to someone in person or over the phone? I’m looking for a mentor as I do not have a support system to get this career opportunity going. Meaning no one I know or interact with knows anything about any of this. Any tips or help is appreciated, thank you in advance. I just don’t want to screw up when I fly to where ever I need to interview and only have 200 bucks and need to get things right the first time etc etc. kind of scenario.
Email me so we can stay in touch if i can help....let me know what route you are trying to go to start.
jbull68@gmail.com
I live in Michigan and I just want a union that is close to me, and I want to know what are the required courses that i have to take to be merchant mariner, and can I apply for the course without the TWIC card and MMC.
You need TWIC and MMC. If you want to join the industry take the time and do it right. Things that are worth while in life do not come without effort.
Can I become a merchant mariner with missing teeth? I know you mentioned a physical. Is that something that they might look at?
To my knowledge it should be okay as long as you don't have any health problems...
Moin, is being a qualified (Wholesale) Merchant in Germany helpfull in starting in the merchant marine?
Not really....different job
I applied to the SIU Unlicensed Apprentice program, just finished all the medical stuff
Congrats!!! Hope to see you out here... Stay in touch...my email is on the channel
Where do you apply at?
Im 27 in the Army, my contract ends when i turn 30, im still completly physically capable, i dont smoke or drink, my health is solid. Whats your opinion for me considering this field of work. The reason im interested is the high rate of pay just being honest. I have my GI Bill which i could use to pay for school. Ive never heard of this line of work and im learning through you. Should i have a try at this considering my age and how long school takes? Thanks
Sure, and you don't have to go to a 4-year school to start this career unless you choose to.... stay in touch my email is on this channel and if you can't find it I will just give it to you
thanks for the video. are pets permitted on ships? I imagine it's a bit lonely at sea at times..
No we are not supposed to bring pets but it would be nice to have a small pet on board for good morale...
can i join but i have a expunged misdemeanor like 4 years ago... dont drink and no drugs.. have my high school grad and i love the ocean and can swim good and can handle rough ocean waters as i do fishing
Just call the national Maritime Center you can Google them and call them and then you can start the process where you need to get all these documents I mentioned. Good to apply TWIC first
I am 20 years old and from the marianas islands 🇲🇵and this spark my interest because of the pay and travel experience. I started on the TWIC application and all but i think its overwhelming because i have no experience. I would love to hear your advice🙏🙏
Do you have USA Passport.... when you work on ships you will be getting your jobs from the United States
Any idea how the transition for being in the U.S. Navy as a Quartermaster to a Merchant Mariner would be? How quickly would it be to get licensed as a Mariner Officer?
It depends on what way you plan on entering to be a merchant mariner and then you could see if there is any fast track. Example enter MSC, SIU, or private companies. If you are thinking SIU to start call them. www.seafarers.org
Info there
Sir, thank you for the video. Question: my merchant mariner credential expire last year. Is it difficult to renew it at this point? Do I have to start all over again?
I think you may be able to and they have recently changed some things as far as Grace periods so I would call the national Maritime Center you can search them online and give them a call and ask them just to make sure. I have contacted them several times and they are very easy to call
www.dco.uscg.mil/nmc/contact/
Scroll down for the # to call them M-F
Is it possible to do this without a passport? Maybe something inland? Government put a hold on my passport … I have to pay a large fee to get it back T.T everything else is no problem for me.
I don't know about the inland jobs but to work the jobs like. I work you definitely need a passport because you enter and leave the country.
I’m thinking about going through MSC (military sealift command ) do you recommend and if so how long is the training for the MSC?
I have never worked for MSC but I know one of the big differences is I think you have to work when they want you to work. when and where as opposed to the union you choose when you work. I see more people go from MSC to the union then the opposite. I think they like the freedom of choosing where they work and when, but if you don't mind that I'm sure the benefits and everything are good
Big Con: Pirates 🏴☠️ 🇸🇴
The ships I work on when there is a pirate high risk area there is usually a security team on board as well.
Can you be a merchant mariner if you wearing eyeglasses?what about blood pressure, diabetes…etc?
What do you have to pass in the medical exam? Thanks
Yes you have to pass the medical exam and Eyeglasses are perfectly fine but other things that you mentioned I think if it was not good they would make you get it under control with medication or whatever before giving you a fit for Duty. Also before going to see you would have to take a certain amount of medication so that you have enough for the whole trip
I plan to go as apprenticeship and I already have my passport.
That is a great choice. Stay in touch, and I hope to see you onboard soon. 😎🌊🚢⚓️
Hey, Jeff love your channel. I was a deckhand in the army on mike boats. Would this do anything to help my chances?
You just need the docs and credentials and choose to go to training or not...
Does all of this apply if you are aiming to be a deck officer (third mate, second mate, etc…)?
These are things that you need to do to enter the industry if you plan to start from the bottom the only other way to become a deck officer quicker is to go to a 4-year Academy. In addition you will also need to take a basic safety class and a VPDSD Security class I think depending on what avenue you enter
I really enjoy your videos. Great job as always.
Sorry to ask if I missed it but do you have to belong to a union?
Yes I mentioned, but NO you can obtain many different maritime jobs that are non-union.. The ones I do deep sea on the container ships are union.....You can get everything you need and just search companies online to get hired as well. Hope that answers your ?
I am from Guyana new oil country on the map, how can I start my career as a merchant marine with just my STCW certificate? What else I need to do from abroad ?
Contact the US. Coast Guard
Do you have to be a US citizen? What about a permanent lawful resident?
It sounds like you are a permanent legal resident. I would call the national Maritime Center and ask them I have called them several times and they are always very informative. Just search online for National Maritime Center they are located in West Virginia
I'm 57 years old, in excellent health and interested in getting into the engineering department. I have 19 years experience as a journeyman electrician with the international brotherhood of electrical workers (Union). I'm willing to do my time as a wiper/whatever, as long as I'm moving toward turning wrenches again. Would my mechanical experience be taken into account? I currently operate city buses in San Antonio, TX, have driven tractor trailers and am a licensed physical therapist assistant as well. Just looking for where I fit. I'm too old to try to strike for another apprenticeship. I just need to get out there, have a new adventure and earn a living. What would you suggest for my particular situation?
Feel free to email me a way that I can contact you and I would be happy to give you a call and we can discuss it if you like.

Thanks for the response. I went ahead and emailed you my phone number. I'm usually available to talk Saturday almost all day, Sundays after 2pm, Monday and Tuesday all day and Wednesday through Friday after 5pm.
How do you get endorsements if you dont go the school or program route? Thanks in advance
If you are in the union and once you get enough days for your benefits one of the benefits is the school where you go and stay there while you take classes it is all included. One of the Union benefits...taking classes is no charge. You stay there and meals all included during your training classes.
I'm lost. Can u tell me after u got medical and drug test where do you send it to??? And so you pay first before you send medical and drug to....???? Thanks
I'm not 100% sure what you are applying for at the moment. I will give you my email so you can reach out to me. It's easier....

I always get people my email address so they can contact me or call...
I want to do this. I worked on two commercial fishing vessels . And I want to get my Merchant Mariner.
Like the saying goes...."aint nothing to it but to do it" go for it.
Hey Jeff. Great video. I'm in Atlanta Georgia does SUI cover the south? Or what's your opinion on where to go? I'm 52 years young. I went to the website I don't see their contact info
If you want to send me your contact information I can call you. I use WhatsApp at sea
jbull68@gmail.com
Are you a 1099 employee?
What they do on the ship Is they take out the federal taxes and things like that, but we have to take care of our state taxes on our own.
Thank you for the video! I may try the sealift command route. However I am located in Pensacola so there are lots of inland opportunities for me as well like working on a tugboat.
Well whatever you choose I do wish you all the best with it and I'm pretty sure inland is always a good way to go.
I want to work for the steward department on a ship preforming housekeeping, galley, inventory, and laundry services. What type of training and or endorsements (if any) do I need for that? I got my TWIC and my medical certification, do I need anything else? I hold an EMT certification, CPR/ FIRST AID, Food Handlers/ Managers card, and I have an Associates Degree in Recreation. I really want to become an USMM, but I need to know what I'm missing. Thanks for this informative video.
if you send contact info I can call you and talk about it on WhatsApp
jbull68@gmail.com
Hi Jeff Im interested in becoming a USMM. I recently got in contact with SIU to see how to get started with their apprenticeship program. They said they are booked until September 2025. I am working on getting my Twic and MMC in a meanwhile. However I wanted to know what other options I have for both training and maybe even work in the industry while I wait for SIU to be available.
Private companies like the ones in the Gulf of Murcia, tug boats, etc. Call the companies to apply.
I’m 28 years old and looking to make a career change into this field. I have a bachelor’s degree in an unrelated field of study, is there an alternative route to work in the engine department other than another 4 year degree? I want to become a 3A/E, do you know if there are any graduate programs that offer such a track?
No you don't need another for your degree you can try to enter off the street or you can go to a training program
I'm going to record another video and explain how to get started in a very simplistic way I will be able to post it when I get home in early July..feel free to send me an email and we can exchange information if you would like to talk further.

Sorry...it is the stupid voice texting....lol
Hey! Used to live in Virginia Beach, miss it! As the saying goes: Virginia is for lovers. And I do love Virginia. Hey, question you made this video about 9 months ago, are they still in need of merchant mariners? last time i check they don't have as many seaman as they need. I am 36 and I do not have the time or luxury to go to school now for seafaring, obligations dictate that I am constantly working without fail. Can I get all my required documentation and take any accelerated, or expedited classes that require maybe only 2 weeks at top before I can apply and secure a position on a vessel? I have 15 years experience working in warehouses and with P.I.T. equipment and I am ready for a change. I want to see the world, the sea beckons. Please tell me this is feasible to get into the industry quicker since they have a demand for it.
And thank you for all the work you have done, much obliged!
Yes there is still a demand for mariners and you could absolutely do it. If you want to send me an email we can exchange information and contact each other and I can explain more..

I live in New York is there anyway you could help me get into this I’m in a union for scaffolding now I’m 33 and want some change
having a 50/100 Ton master . How does that apply or not apply ?
I'm not 100% sure but it could apply possibly to things like tug boats or push boats.... You could possibly check with the coast guard to find out. The ships I work on are much larger than that
You would be an AB in rank
I’m a current high schooler (senior) interested in this field. I wanted to join the military but likely can’t due to medical reasons so this seems like the next best option. I live in NY and have overall good grades at school a good SAT score so the SUNY Maritime college seems good for me. Do you think a bachelors or an associates degree would be better to get? How difficult are entry level jobs and internships to get?
What department do you think you would be interested to go in would be my first question? and secondly If you get a 4 year degree you will start at a position that is not an entrant level position.
@@JeffOnboard I’m interested in the deck department.
If you're positive it is what you want to do a 4 year degree would let you start at a higher position but if you're not sure you can Always do the training program through the Seafarers International Union (SIU)

I didn't know u have to be a citizen. What can we do if we are not citizens? Sailor, captain? What are our options?
If you are not a United States citizen why would you want to sail in the United States why not just saie in your own country. I'm not sure where you are from, but there's probably a lot easier ways to sail closer.
Thanks Sir. I had myTWIC plus USA passport. And I passed drug test. And I does my physical. Only to be told I have to do an ECHO. Was not told that when I saw my cordiologist I was send by Norwegian. I also worked on a chartered boat as a server/stew. Thanks 🙏 for your idea 😊. I’m 66
Yes sometimes a different employer could possibly require some different things. Also some people might have different checks based on past medical history I'm not sure
I'm 56 years old and retired /bored out of my mind. I'm also a Marine Corps Vet. How will an old guy like me fare on the entry level? Not looking to get rich, just wanna stay active and love being on the water.
I think you can do it as long as you are healthy, able to pass the physical exams, and work 7 days a week.
I imagine there are probably a lot of opportunities out of Norfolk? @@JeffOnboard
Have you worked for NAVSEA? @@JeffOnboard
Nope
Especially for ABs

That's awesome! It sounds like you are almost finished.
Do I need to go to a 4 year school to work in the engine department?
No, you do not....
What's the average annual income for someone working straight out of siu?
That is a hard question to answer because every ship pays a total different amount. I would say if you get on a good ship you could at least make 6000 or more per month.
Hi jeff.Im glad i saw your page.
Can a permanent resident (not a US citizen yet) qualified to be a MM? Im a merchant vessel ship officer for about 13yrs but with foreign passport and foreign stcw certificates and license. Ive search about TWIC,MMC,etc. and
I've been checking NMC and USCG website about the requirements but not sure what to do about switching my certificates and license to US standards / requirement. Do i need to undergo again trainings in the US or its just an easy process changing the certificates once verified? Actually, i have no idea where to start, who to contact with.. its been a struggle for me and I dont know if PR are allowed .
Thank you man..
Ask the coast guard for the details because I really don't know how things transfer from other countries you will have to speak to the US Coast Guard
Could a husband and wife both get into this and be on the same ship?
Possible, but not super easy....it would be all about timing....
@@JeffOnboard thanks!
What is, in your experience, the better pathway to becoming a mariner? I've seen, in my state, school pathways including getting AAS in supply chain management, going to Charleston at RCM Maritime, for their training programs, or even like you mentioned, a four year degree from one of the many universities in SC.
In my opinion it depends on many things send me an email and we can exchange information and discuss it

Whats the best paying jobs for a newbie and whats classes you recommend to take to improve your chance of getting a good paying job
What department are you? What job...B or C senority?
Is there a special dr you have to go to for your physical
The union has locations where they are done normally...you would just ask your local union hall about setting it up....
I don't have a dentist. Does S.I.U. offer an inhouse dentist, or contracted dentist that works with them? And how much is the dentist to get into S.I.U. apprenticeship? Is it true that I can not join the Union if I do not have my cavities treated by a dentist? I hope it is not exorbitant.
Do we still have to take the covid shot to enter a S.I.U.? How much would you say roughly everything cost to enter the S.I.U. apprentice in Piney Point? Excuse my excessive queries, but I am so excited to begin this process.
When you are in the union you will have dental benefits but I don't know anything about that you have to have pre-treatment done you can call the school go on www.seafarers.org website and contact them and ask...I don't know the cost, but they can tell you...It has changed over the years.
As far as the shot to the best of my knowledge you don't have to take it but I'm not 100% sure
@@JeffOnboard Hey thanks again, much obliged, I will email you. I just signed up earlier for the apprenticeship at S.I.U. Piney Point and I am ready for this. So ready!
So awesome, stay in touch

Why not just do it in your country? Easier
What are the age requirements for MM? I'm 42 years old but my nephew is 19 and looking for a career and I would like to suggest it to him. Thank you for all the information.
Both of your ages are just fine to start a career in this industry feel free to email me and if you want to exchange phone numbers we can talk more and I can help you anyway I can...

Thanks for all the information! I’m up here in central Virginia and close to VA Beach. So many questions for you as I am a bit older!
You can email me... my email address is on the channel...
can international student join US merchant navy??
You would need all your documents to work on a ship and legally be allowed to work in the United States. You also get your jobs in the United States. You have to go to a union hall and wait for the jobs there. Go online and locate the National Maritime Center (NMC)if you want anymore information. IT IS ALL THERE...GOOD LUCK
Dont you worry about your apartment when your gone ?
Not at all.....
@@JeffOnboard that's cool I'd be worried about mine if I was further away
As long as your rent and light bill coming out of your account every month. There’s nothing to worry about. If you sign a one or two year lease. You have to be there to renew it obviously. You going to make it before the renew date anyway
Yep...."auto payed expenses"
Enjoying retirement now Jeff but after watching your vids, I would seriously consider a career as a merchant seaman if a was leaving school. Your vids are excellent for anyone considering this career. Nice apartment Jeff ! 🇬🇧🇺🇸🍺👍
Thank you as always my friend.. I just try to help those interested because it can be hard to know what to do.....
Hey I'm 24 and graduated college a few months back, been tossing the idea between this and the military. If you're able to answer a question for me it would be fantastic, are there any benefits to becoming a mariner with a b.a. degree? Any pay differences or opportunities for quicker advancement? Thank you!
Not really unless you went to school for this job....
If you go into the army, you'll be an officer, they get paid well and you're pretty high up in rank.
Is there any way that any non usa citizen who is already into this profession for 10 years can join merchant javy from usa ?
You may need to contact US Coast Guard (USCG) and ask how to covert. Many of our jobs are UNION as well requiring to be a member of the labor union, but not all.
Thanks for the info been looking into this as a career change for a little bit and didn’t know what I really needed to start.
Awesome, stay in touch
@@JeffOnboard will do man thanks I sent my application for an siu im in California but the closest one I can find is in seatle
Well I hope to see you out there someday and you can join me in a video.
when u say school are u saying to attend college or siu school?
Yes many options including those...Also people can go to MSC. Also private non union shipping.
@@JeffOnboard is the best option to become a merchant marine to attend college?
If you are young and 100% sure it is what you wish to do maybe it would be great
hi i am Indian seafarer can i get us licence
You would need to meet the requirements in USA
About the 4 year degree, I just want to know what stuff are they going to have me do?
That is a long question and difficult to answer here feel free to email me and we can discuss it more.

Hi Jeff... im a 2nd officer Filipino Seafarer... but right now planning to migrate to US due to my wife's work. How can i continue to be a seafarer in the US?
Try contacting one of the unions... Ask them if there is any additional training you would need for the USA side.... Also you can contact the national maritime center you can find them on the Internet and ask them as well if there is different training required to sail under US flag....i am always here to help any way i can...
Im 34 is that too old for an academy or should i just go for it without joining a merchant marine academy? I live next to Vallejo
There is also a training program at the Seafarers International Union that you can go through, which takes approximately one year. If you want to start that way, it will not take you 4 years that way.... that would also allow you to start working much quicker and start making money, but it depends on what you want to do in your life... if you can go to school for 4 years at your age I guess you could, but you could also try the way I mentioned if you would like to get started in the industry quicker
If you would like to discuss it further feel free to send me an email And I could probably contact you using WhatsApp if you have that
Jbull68@gmail.com
I kind of had the same question I actually have a WhatsApp if I could text you there and talk a little bit about this. Thank you for all the help.

@@JeffOnboard I'm leaning towards stewardship or deckhand whichever offers a higher pay. I would pick engineer but I'm not mechanically inclined. I know nothing about mechanics.

Hey Jeff can you become a deck hand or work in the engine room without a 4 year and just a trade school?
You don't need 4 year not at all to start.
i am 16 and trying to figure out my career field, is this a secure and stable career with a security of job after I do college? also if I get into maritime industry, how salary should I expect after college? also is it more difficult to get a job if you are not from the US ? And also what other jobs do you have in the industry if you don't want to travel ( like ship broker, etc) are they stable?
Far too hard to answer in a text message feel free to email me and we can discuss it more.
